What Every Competitive Game Needs: Offline Mode with Bots

(Nail) #21

what is ET:QW & Brink?
I don’t want them to waste time making AIs.

implying they would start from scratch.

they can just reuse the stuff they did before. the bots don’t even have to be good or exceptionally clever, the option alone would be enough.
AI was done by id Software not SD

and on a different engine, nothing to reuse

For learning the mechanics of the weapons on targets, one thing that could be implemented (that is mostly already there) is to take the target practice in the training hub tutorial, and make it standalone. So the training hub could be an actual hub, with more than one ‘training mission’ to select. You find this in newer FPS’ today in barebones fashion (BF4, CoD Advanced Warfare) and more than you could ever ask for (CSGO and workshop maps).

Targets would be nice too

(Eox) #24

Also while we’re at it, I don’t know if it’s still on topic, but making a tutorial for every merc could be welcomed. Some people may be clueless when trying a specific character for the first time. It can be useful.

(Szakalot) #25

definitely don’t want DEVS to waste time making an AI

Would love to be able to run around maps by myself just to get a feeling for them, perhaps once Beta isn’t focused on load testing that’ll be the case. I’m sure more bugs will be found once that happens as somebody with some degree of dedication to finding bugs will probably load up by theirselves. It may though be a complicated task to make the local client capable of such a thing. I don’t think bots are worth the time either, if at all, until the gameplay mechanics are further solidified.

Enter empty server … do your stuff … if someone joines: a simple talk may be useful … period.

and yes one important thing: Have balls to suck and loose and feel ok with that. then the game itself is Trainingground enough. Best practice is just playing and making mistakes.

(bubblesKeyboard) #28

Targets are helpful because headshots in the game make a huge difference

For some things. For others it’s too slow and time can be better spent/more things learned without others human players.

empty servers are great for learning routes

And for practicing movement!

I mean no one would ever say, “No we don’t need a mode that’s offline with bots.” It would be a great addition even if you would never use it.

(bubblesKeyboard) #33

Yeah but DEVS got other things to do. Maybe targets that you can set up like in SF2 where you can go into practice mode, press shift and spawn bots that dont move and just stand there for practice

This

id had nothing to do with brink, and ai is independent of engine. unreal engine also has bot support since the first version.

(Nail) #36

Brink was an id Software game, now everything you say is invalid

(Reddeadcap) #37

Dont really see the point, but it’d be useful. I for one would just enjoy a shooting range option where bots are standing still or given simple commands and the ability to swap to every merc available to test weapon damage/headshot multiplier melee damage and ability effects, etc.

(Nail) #38

you can always use training ground for target practice

(son!) #39

Here’s a nice video from a BF4 player (Rela) on the importance of having offline training modes

SP would be useful to focus on finding and mastering bugs and glitches =P .
QW SP was sooooo boring.
