What am I missing?

This is a question of style, I knew some Quake III CPMA players who could only aim like you do. Still beat the s*** out of me back in the days. This is really personal but both work. The movement in DB is still a bit experimental, yet I like the fast movement speed.

Have you tried some killing sprees with the secondary weapon of the soldier ? Helped me a lot to get used to the action in DB (I pwn 4 to 5 kills in a good streak now and end up with hp regen all the time ^^).

While I miss the strafe-jumping and fluid movement of the Q3 based games, I always have had a terrible k/d ratio as I play engineer, aka lemming, and I work the objectives almost exclusively. Although DB does ‘feel’ different than previous SD games in many ways, I can’t say that it’s ‘worse’ really. I always thought that the movement in ETQW was overly fast and twitchy (needed due to the huge maps).

My standard is still W:ET, because movement always felt very natural in that game, although it certainly had its quirks (try jumping with a framerate above 333 fps). UT99, UT2k3 and UT2k4 all had good movement from my point of view as well. My only complaint about the movement in DB is that it still doesn’t have that smooth, continuous feel that W:ET had, but I attribute some of the glitchiness to high ping, a marginal system, and the alpha state of the software. I also don’t feel like I can jump high enough or far enough. In Brink, you could scramble over things, but in DB, I often feel like I can’t get up on an 18 inch tall box…

I feel the same and suspect this is something that’s being worked on. Movement just feels a bit off. Not the overall speed, it’s just oddly sluggish when it should be fluid.

I think COD has proven that a game can be an Esport while still keeping the minimum requirement, be it skill or performance, very low.

(RasteRayzeR) #45

CoD is slower, this is the realistic kind of FPS … you don’t need a lot of fps to be efficient, just has to be stable where in games like DB or Quake, the difference of fps really gives a whole new level of playability to the game.

Now I don’t say a game has to be made for a happy few in order to be an ESport, just that I like the fact that DB reminds me of Quake III on multiple aspects

(tokamak) #46

Good and I´m not pleading to lower the ceiling to please the mainstream. But right now that’s not what’s going on. The combat simply requires too much performance compared to other games and therefore not accessible.

(RasteRayzeR) #47

Players come from different backgrounds, I used to play like an hyperactive nevrotic on Quake 3, so I find the killing in DB is adapted. Maybe the system of servers could be adjusted like they were in Brink (according to the level of the player ?). Because right now we all play on the same servers, no matter the differences in skills.

I don’t notice any difference between 60 and 120 fps to be honest.

I think this is a huge part of the problem with the map and some obstacles. The jump height seems low compared to other games. This makes movement over and around obstacles seem like a hindrance.

Also, that is a good point that UT2K3’s movement was pretty solid. One thing with DB is there is a slight delay when you switch strafing directions. My character has to stop and slow down before going the other direction.

Everything gets smoother, it reduces the input-lag of the mouse, you can better interpret enemy trajectories, etc etc.

For me it means a lot to have a stable 120fps, and i really feel it now that I had to send my Geforce 570 SC for repairs and am forced to use my old Geforce 8800 GTX …

(tokamak) #51

ETQW and COD play perfectly fine at 30fps. 60fps is amazing but you don’t need it to perform well.

(bluefoot) #52

I know exactly what you mean.

I’ve probably only played it for a total of 90 minutes, across some 7 or 8 weeks … the chief reason is that the whole experience feels so disconnected. I can’t really put my finger on it, but it just doesn’t feel right. I’ve always picked up FPS games really quickly and been good to excellent at most of them … like I say though, the only way I can really describe how DB feels at the moment is ‘disconnected’ … I just can’t get a hang of it.

I can definitely feel some input lag (far more than there should be when on a low latency 120hz panel and ps/2 keyboard with ping of less than 15ms to servers), hit detection feels a little weird, and movement feels a bit jumpy. The weapons don’t really have much feel to them at all, have no weight, and it all feels like spray and pray … of course, this is highly subjective, but it’s definitely how I feel, and definitely not how I felt about Brink (or ET:QW).

I really hope the general feel of the game is improved … because I just can’t imagine myself playing it, if it stays the way it is, nor can I imagine it being successful.

I like that the Brink-esque art style and mission structure & objectives have returned, and the smart ability system is now returning (even though it never worked as well as it should have done in Brink). I wasn’t so much a fan of SD’s previous work, but I really enjoyed Brink, despite its many glaring flaws, lack of polish, early release and cessation of development.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom … one thing I am happy about with DB is that despite being a F2P game, they haven’t gone for a horrifc browser based client like Crytek have with Warface. If you’re not on the closed beta, I can’t even begin to describe how bad it is. It’s just depressingly awful. The worst social network cum game client / launcher hybrid you could possibly imagine. The game itself, despite some horribly unbalanced PvP maps (which I hope they’ll rebalance), is a great deal superior to DB in its current state and a lot more fun, in my view. Weapons feel good, each has a unique feel and gunplay is a great deal more satisfying and tactical.

Anyway, you’re not the only one, first poster.

One thing that might help some of you guys is the following setting in ShooterEngine.ini

OneFrameThreadLag=False

By default this is set to True to improve overall framerate but it does add to the input delay. At the cost of some fps you can disable it to get a slightly more responsive game.

We do aim to add this option to the menus at some point.

(Breo) #54

It doesn’t feel slow if you play against decent players because the ttk is pretty short with the OHK’s and high rof weapons.

(OwNLY) #55

In my games i normally aim for 120 FPS, althoug 80-90 FPS is still playable, too.
But below that a game doesn´t run smooth anymore. I even got 80 FPS in Battlefield 3 with my current PC.
After the patch from monday i got on a full server about 30-40 FPS, totally unplayable for me.
After heavy tweaking in the config i managed to get about 50 FPS, better but still pretty bad.
It´s a shame that the fix for the input lag costs FPS. :frowning:
Also i die a lot behind walls (Ping to server ~30).

My main concerns for this game are to fix netcode and performance.
I can´t determine if its the huge crosshair wich makes my aim sloppy, the (input-)lag, the movement or the hitboxes.

When we are able to play this game good with a good performance,
tracking down issues in the gameplay will be easier.

(bluefoot) #56

It feels less bad … but something still just doesn’t feel right to me … I barely feel like I’m controlling my character.

I sometimes get that feeling in a game because it suits a different sensitivity setting on my mouse, but after finding whether I feel it’s suited to high or something lower, I usually then feel at home … but I’ve tried everything.

P.S. Setting it to false seems to have absolutely no impact on FPS for me; i.e. enabling it is a good thing with no drawback.

P.P.S. I agree that performance (in FPS terms) is strangely poor on this game (maybe due to lack of optimisation due to alpha). Textures aren’t massive, poly counts aren’t big, no super-tricky lighting, destructible environments or physics … yet it seems to be a very demanding game. Depending on patch / drivers, I remember Brink sometimes being abysmally slow on AMD cards … hope this won’t be the case again.

Nothing can be compared to Q3 you heretic! ^^

(RasteRayzeR) #58

I firmly want the chat balloon from Quake III in DB while chatting (I even did a post on that)! xD But Quake III is a myth, for sure !

I’ll remember you said I’m an heretic next time I see you in game :infiltrator:

xDDDDD

I just started playing DB but agree with the original post in this thread. So far the game has been exceptionally frustrating. Understand that I just started so I may be off base here.

There really seems little class differentiation in shooting. I tried sniper first, prone in a tiny alcove, and some guy a block away runs by spraying in all directions and kills me? Really? Also static pictures of the maps so that you can get oriented to objectives would be great. Half the time I have no idea where I am, or where my team is.

remeber that almost all of the player in alpha are proplayers… he didnt spread in all direction, he aimed for your head
