Weird control lock up problem type...thing...

(Brevik) #1

I’ve been playing ET for a fair old while now (5 months perhaps? Who knows…), but recently I’ve been getting this weird “control lock up” problem. Every so often, and totally random (no regular pattern that I can see), I won’t be able to control my “character”. Graphically everything is fine, the sounds are all coming through OK and nothing untoward is showing on the lagometer - I’m just stuck doing whatever I was doing before I locked up, from crouching with the mortar with the command map stuck open, to strafing sideways firing at a blank wall (leading someone to tell me: “Brevik you can’t shoot for shit” this evening - nice…).

Anyone have any ideas? the lock up can last for anything from a split second, to a couple of seconds (usually the longest is when I’m firing the mortar) - I wondered if my keyboard is playing up, but the mouse locks up too. One thing I have noticed is that when I’m using the mortar it will often fire a round after the lock up has finished - even if I hadn’t pressed anything “post lock-up” (in my annoyance I’d hammer a few buttons during lock up…).

Last night a reinstall of ET seemed to fix the problem (i.e. I reinstalled ET and it didn’t happen afterwards - could be coincidence), but I don’t really want to be reinstalling ET every time I want to play

My system

AMD Athlon 2000XP 1.67GHz
768MB Ram
80GB Hard Disk
nVidia GeForce4 MX 440
Windows XP Home Service Pack 1
512K ADSL connection

I have the 53.03 drivers for the GeForce4 - I regressed back to 45.23 (because I had them) and they were as bad if not worse. My config is pretty much non-tweaked (in fact I’m trying hard to think of anything I’ve tweaked at all).

Any help would be appreciated, I’d rather look a bit silly for having missed something obvious and get it fixed than continue getting frustrated with it. However, I’m no hardware expert so I don’t know what else you would need to know (or where I would find it for that matter).

Thanks in advance,

B

Couple of things…

There are issues with the 53.xx drivers for non-fx nvidia cards and ET (punkbuster issue)… and there is no obvious advantages using the non-fx drivers for older nvidia cards. But from my own experience, this made the system crash - strange. Try going on a non-pb surver and see if you get the same problem.

Secondly - a strange one - you don’t have a KVM switch involved? I have had this exact problem with a poorly-programmable KVM switch - including the post-lock-up ‘the last key I pressed is still active’ until I pressed it again.

A long shot!

this isnt a driver issue

maybe your PS/2 ports are abit *****ed :???:

BUY IOLITE

Thanks for the replies guys, happily I fiddled around with stuff and it seems to be fine now (including installing the 44.something-or-other drivers I had).

Of course there’s always the chance that it might mess up again…

(btw, no KVM switch and the mouse is USB rather than PS/2).

Thanks again.

Howdy

Usually pressing the stats button and the top shots button does it for me. Even when i change those 2 buttons to something other than alt and ctrl.

Fusen? It IS a driver problem, and a known one at that. Search for it… pb seemed to have issues with a few drivers… noticed it on many clan topics about qnet…

The pb and nvidia driver issue from what I have seen cause a complete system lock-up and the PC then needs to be hard restarted (reset). Brevik says that it locks up for a bit but then continues so it sounds like a different problem (plus he’s gone back to 45 version which has no major problems - unless the old installation of 53 were not removed properly and left some residual issues)

(pgh) #9

Yeh, from what ‘youve’ seen.

Ive seen, heard and experienced different. And on 2 different games too. (ET/Q3)

They were having problems with the 45 versions of nvidia drivers? (just as well I’m still on 43 then)

(pgh) #11

I was only making a statement saying to Fusen that it was a PS/2 problem, else it would be freezing outside game too no doubt. And, couldnt see many people nowadays still using non Wireless or USB mice/keyboards.

And, he didnt know if he was having problems with the drivers, it was what was suggested as the cause of his problem… and the rest of us mearly agreed that it is/was…

Well, it seems to be fixed now guys, and to be honest I don’t know how, maybe reinstalling the 44.xx drivers did it, I have no idea - I’m just happy to be playing normally again (well, as close as I get to normal…).

It just seems weird that it was only the controls that locked up, graphics and sound were fine, so I wasn’t sure if it was the same type of problem that others have posted here.

(and a “Howdy” back to Ifurita  )
