Wasted my money.

I’m on diffrent forum and
" I’m pretty sure that that is your problem your psu can’t bring enough power to the gpu because you need 450w as stated above "

My PC is brand new and i can’t run any new games which come out?
This is ****ing Halarious… spent a fortune, Was looking forward for Battlefield 3 and now i can’t play it because i only got 400 PSU. **** THIS!!!
Okay, i spent a fortune on my Gaming PC and apperently my problem is my PSU, Its 400 W And i need 450 W?
I spent a ****ing fortune and i can’t even run a game? this is pathetic. !!!1
I’m actually surprised you spent “a fortune” and only got a 400W PSU. What are your exact specs? It’s hard to gauge the power usage of a system without knowing the specs. The best approach obviously is to get a meter, but usually an approximation can be made by knowing the specifications.

But yes, indeed. 400W Is a bit on the low side, although it should also be said that most gaming computers don’t consume as much power as computer retailers would like you to believe.

Also, the GTX460 is actually a very good card. I’ve had zero troubles with any game ever since the card was released. However, I do find that nVidia’s drivers are sometimes somewhat faulty and sometimes have the strange tendency to stop working for some reason.

(Moonlighter) #23

Power supplies aren’t all that expensive. A good 600W power supply will run around $60-70. If this is a new system, I’d take up the issue with the manufacturer. Otherwise you could look at one of these:

Any of these would be more than up to the task, and they’re all reliable brands that should serve you well. Even if you upgrade your video card at some later date. They might not be enough for SLI or Crossfire, but they’ll take pretty much anything else you throw at them. All of them currently have mail-in rebates to bring the price down to $60.

So i won’t be bale to run Battlefield 3?

You may be able to run it fine. Different games stress video cards to different amounts, causing different amounts of power draw. You may be able to run BF3 fine. I can’t say one way or another.

(DryRoastedLemon) #26

What brand is your GTX 460, by the way?

First things first: Try out some graphically intense games. See if you have the error with those games as well. Do that first. If the error returns, I would suggest that you return to the store where you got the PC and explain your issues. I asked you about the brand because some brands are a bit hit-and-miss. Maybe you had a bad one (and maybe you can get a replacement?), or maybe indeed it isn’t getting enough juice from the PSU.

When you do decide on getting a new PSU, I recommend you get at least 600W. If you’re not planning to make some FrankenRig featuring 3 graphics cards, that will be more than enough.

Oh! Tip! Run Futuremark (look it up). That’s a graphical benchmark which is pretty stressful for the computer. See if it bugs out.

(Moonlighter) #27

I’d have recommended Furmark, but I believe both AMD and nVidia throttle the card some on Furmark now. It used to be the benchmark you used to try and crash video, and was good for checking overclock stability.

(Samzon18) #29

I don’t understand what you mean mate, what will that do?

(jfunk) #30
So i won’t be bale to run Battlefield 3?
It’s possible, but you’ll likely have stability problems in any high end game that puts stress on the card since the power supply is questionable at best.

As has been suggested, if you purchased this system pre-built, I would complain that you did not receive a power supply that meets the minimum requirements for the hardware components contained.

If the system was purchased separately from the video card and you installed the card youself, your best bet may just be investing in a new power supply yourself.

Edit: Just for clarification, your overall component choices were fine. A Core i5, 4GB of RAM, and a 460GTX card is indeed powerful enough to play any game out there (not on MAX settings, but certainly playable on medium). Just need to get that power supply up to snuff to eliminate it as a source of instability.

And also remember, this particular error IS a known Brink issue, so don’t expect it to go away entirely if you replace your PS until Splash Damage releases a fix for this.

(Moonlighter) #31

I’m not saying you should run furmark. I don’t think it’ll really help test the stability any more. I believe both AMD and nVidia now detect furmark in their drivers and slow down the video card to prevent it from crashing. Prior to this, if you were attempting to overclock a video card, running Furmark was a good way of testing whether the clock speeds you’ve selected were stable. If it ran Furmark without crashing you could be fairly certain no game you chose to play would crash either. There was some hoopla bout it a while ago where a few people actually burnt out their video cards running Furmark. The throttling was put in place to prevent that from happening.

If you’ve got other graphically intense games, you could test them and see if they run okay. You could also download the free version of Futuremark’s (http://www.futuremark.com/) 3DMark 11 software and run through those tests and see if you crash.

You could still run Furmark, it may work to see if other things can crash your video card. http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

(Samzon18) #32

So with my PSU theres no chance for me to play new games coming out?
I can’t beleiave i gotthis PC, I can’t even play games whic hare coming out, I’m abit upset atm, i’ve spent a fortune already, for PC and GTX 460.!

(Moonlighter) #33

So with my PSU theres no chance for me to play new games coming out?

I don’t believe anyone here has said that. We’re asking you to try testing your system using other benchmarks or games to see if you have the same, or similar problem. If you don’t, then your system may be just fine.

In fact, Brink is known to cause this error. A patch from either Splash Damage or an updated driver from nVidia may even resolve the problem for you and let you play Brink without issue. The rest of your system may be set up to use less power than the average computer. I did notice the microATX board, so who knows. A good 400W power supply may be sufficient for your system.

(Samzon18) #34

Okay, well i don’t have any others games at the moment. Please can you link me a simple programme of some sort? and instructions.
Because i don’t understand that Furmark stuff.

(Moonlighter) #35

Futuremark 3D Mark 11: http://www.futuremark.com/

Download the software, install it, and run it. If it runs through the whole thing without crashing, you’re good.

Furmark: http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

Download version 1.9.0, install it, and run it. Let this one run for a while. If it runs without crashing, you’re good.

(Samzon18) #36

So if it runs without any problems, i be able buy Battlefield 3 and play without problems?

I appreciate your help, I need go out for abit, when i come back i’ll post my results.
Thanks again Moonlighter.

(Jimmy James) #37

From what I’ve seen it’s a problem specifically with the nVidia 4.xx and 5.xx cards on Windows 7. Both my wife and I are using Windows XP. I’m running a nVidia 8600 GT on my PC and while Brink is a bit laggy in multiplayer it doesn’t crash. My wife runs a 9800 GTX+ and has no problems. I plan to upgrade my video card to a high end 4.xx nVidia card this afternoon. I’ll let you know how it performs with Brink on XP.

Thanks again Moonlighter.
It’s not a guarantee, but probably yes.

And don’t get TOO stressed if it turns out the power supply is a problem. It’s not the end of the world and it can be corrected without spending too much more money. You just got a slightly underpowered power supply for your setup (maybe…we don’t know that for sure yet) and that is a very correctable situation.

I must say, I find it a little “shady” that these guys are advertising this “gaming” machine that comes with IGP for video and 400W power supply. A bit misleading.

For the record, here is the power supply it includes:

18A on the 12V rail. I believe the 460GTX SE is spec lists 24A.

If it is indeed your PSU that is the problem I suggest this power supply:

I’ve been using one for a couple years now and haven’t had any problems. You won’t regret it.
