War of the Fans...

I’m a frequent visitor to the Phobos Lab which is now known as PlanetDOOM and they had a pretty good article about D3 vs H2, and I was thinking about posting the entire article here, I know it’s generally not good form to do so, so I’ll leave a link to it and a little snippet. I suggest all Halflife and Doom fans read it as it’s very eye opening, especially for loyalists such as myself.

Two games, each in their own time redefined what a first person shooter is. In one corner, DooM, younger generation deems it a thing of the past, a few give it respect, but it’s the game that invented the genre in its gory blessedness. Half Life, the game that redefined the first person shooter, the game younger generation mostly plays in the form of counter-strike. Two giants of different time and audience are now bound to clash in the fiercest of all arenas: the market. Yes, by an odd coincidence the sequels of these games, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 will both be coming out within half a year to each other, making them the contestants of the audience and the various press awards. Who will win this epic battle? First things first, and first things are that neither Valve nor id Software has a habit of making bad games. And this doesn’t mean that neither company made a game someone didn’t like, but they didn’t make a game that everyone hated, one of those games that is obviously plain… bad.

Ignoring the obvious that fact that die hard fanboys of each game will swamp all over their respective chosen title and spooge till they can spooge noe more, the rest of us will most likely play HL2. Not because it’s better. Not because of any story/gameplay/techincal reasons, etc. Simply because it’s coming out in a few months. D3 on the other hand is coming out next summer.

It’s a classsic computer games occurrence - two titles destined to go head to head, only one is coming out significantly earlier than the other. By the time D3 comes out, a large portion of the D3 fanboys will have been converted to HL2 simply because they can play it and so do. Then they love it.

The only way D3 is going to stop this from happening is by making sure that D3 blows HL2 so far out of the water, it dies of dehydration. As both games are going to have their selling points, D3 is unlikely to do this. Also, Valve are talking about releasing the mapping SDK immediately with HL2 and the software SDK shortly after. If they do this, then by the time D3 comes out, a vast array of user made HL2 maps will be out with many more in progress and several mods in progress. Possibly with some completed. Especially if it is as easy to mod as valve claim it is.

Add to this HL2’s 32 player MP support compared to D3’s 4 (as it stands although I bet they’ll try and push for more). HL2 will own the MP ring and only Q4 will be able to compete. But Q4 isn’t going to be out until after D3 so that too will be falling behind.

D3 will be fighting an uphill struggle all the way. Of course, both games will sell millions and make stupidly vast amounts of profit, but I personally think HL2 will go down in the history books as the greatest FPS (until HL3/D4).

either that or people stop being retarded and just get both on the strengh of them both likely being excellent games. its not like theyre women who are going to get upset if you try out another one.

id Software will not be working on another DOOM for quite some time if ever… nor will they be working on another sequel for their next project… they’ll be doing something entirely new (however still based in the FPS realm).

However keep in mind that just because something comes out first, by no means garuntees it will be better. Just a quick example in terms of HARDWARE… the Atari Jaguar (64bit? I think not) and afterward the N64 came out and took control of that market. Dreamcast… the first 128bit system made some sales but as soon as PS2 came out, Dreamcast pretty much became no more. Sega even left the console business completely after that.

My point is even I, a Doom fan, can’t predict what I’ll like more because neither game is out yet… but just because one will be out before the other will ultimately not make any difference in how good the games will be.

Damn, that’s brilliant. I need to bring this up next time I overhear another fanboi fight.

Women get upset when you do that? Damn, I think that must be where I’m going wrong…

I hate Half-Life 2 vs Doom III crap. They both look like excellent games, and I want to get both.

Infact, I doubt there’s a competition between developers like some people think there is. A lot of guys at Valve probably can’t wait to play Doom III, and a lot of guys at id probably can’t wait to play Half-Life 2. The developers don’t have some kind of arrogant penis envy contest constantly going on like the fans do.

Well I didn’t post this to start any kind of DOOM 3 versus Halflife 2 “crap.” I posted it because I’ve seen a few times people making the statements that one game is better than the other even though neither is out yet. The article if you actually read it, just goes through the author’s wonder in how people can make such assumptions on both games that still have to be released. Damn loyalists.

It’s just a good read… so read it.
