Hey guys,

I’ve been playing ET for a long time a couple of years ago. Just heard of it’s anniversary and decided to try it out again.

It never was easy to install ET and everything needed to play, but now I really don’t have a clue.

I can’t believe that there is no complete, step by step installation guide pinned as sticky to make it easier to get people to play this awesome game!

Is there something like this at all? If not, can someone make one? I really think that people are scared off by the complication of getting in the game…

How to get started after installation?
is there something like ‘The All-Seeing-Eye’ (In my ET time) around?
What mods to get? For what reasons(Which mod’s good for what etc.)?
Nice listing of communities and websites.

All in all, everything in one(!) place to make it easy to get playing! I know it’s a pain in the ass to get this all together but if you want new players that is an absolute necessity!

Tried installing it with an all-in-one installer on win8 (http://wolffiles.de/index.php?filebase&fid=4386)

et.exe has stopped working. not looking very good…

You could try with ET: Legacy (fully backwards compatible with 2.60b).

To find a good server you should use SplatterLadder or TrackBase. If you’re from EU, I can recommend my server (see my signature).

silEnT and N!tmod are nice pub mods. There is also NoQuarter around but it is really laggy (so does silEnT sometimes). Jaymod is an outdated modification but if you would like to play without a single lag/warp, you should look for a Jaymod server as this mod provides the best optimization ever. Wanna jump around? Try ETJump.

Really easy : just go on http://etkey.org, choose “Full Install”, and you will have ET+punkbuster+etkey included, just clik next next next finish xD and play !

The only extra-thing you need for (good) servers running High Definition is z_hdet.pk3

It’s just a pack of resized original textures. These textures are not HD, I’d just call them “high resolution”.

I tried both the full installer from etkey and etlegacy. Both come up with et.exe (etl.exe with legacy) has stopped working…

I use windows 8 and cannot find any info on installing it under my OS. Any ideas?

I am on win 8, (it stinks) but I think i used an ordinary installer like this one:http://www.pownedclan.com/request.php?13

but then you have to get your etkey manually… but it should work :smiley:

Are you sure your HDD is free of malware and so? Do you use any antivirus software? ET (and especially ET:L) works just fine on every Windows OS.

Actually there is one pinned. See “Sticky: Your ET Gaming Experience as a newbie - the State of the Art”. In there is also a guide for Win7. I rewrote it lately extra for a friend and we got it working almost without problems. Only thing was that he had an etkey issue i can’t seem to explain, maybe it was PB not enabled (he said it was enabled though).

So lots of suggestions, it really seems some malware problem then. From where did you download your first version? Some dude once reported that he got a malwared version from somewhere; can’t remember from where though.

Also: when exactly does it say “has stopped working”. On startup? Or are you able to get in for a while.

I just got my Surface Pro a couple of days ago, so the only malware that could be on it is probably from some installer of ET… I got AVG, figured it would be enough to detect anything. Just scanned it and there are no threats whatsoever.

Yeah I saw that post up there and it helped a lot, but I would suggest to change the name to something more self-explaining like “New Players Guide”. Then even though the thread is good, I have a feeling that a completely new ET interested person would find it off-putting, with it saying “Problems you have to face” and such.

A simple step by step list would have been easier imho.

Anyway, I right-click et.exe in the installation folder -> run as admin -> screen switches in 800x640 with grey background and a popup saying "ET.exe has stopped working

A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

I’m not an expert in graphics, but that resolution sounds wrong to me. Normally you should standardly have a 4:3 resolution, something like 640X480. Are you sure that number is true? Or was it just a spelling mistake.

P.S. i assume you are on a laptop. Maybe Windows switches that app to that resolution automatically. Never had that problem, can only assume.

That is some nice feedback. Maybe someone will replace that article with a more complete one one day. Also looking at this thread and seeing the thousands of installers being pointed to is just horrible imo. Causes only confusion. That is why i demanded from SD that they actually put together their own download package (and not point to trackbase, which also hosts some installer version, i mean it is good intentions, but imo not the way todo). Would greatly appreciate badman appointing a group of people putting together the one way of installing and the result will be a download from their own servers here at SplashDamage, maybe even wrapped up nicely in a well written article and whenever someone has problems installing, that will be the thread of answer pointed to. I totally feel you there maddom :slight_smile:

He has a Surface Pro, it’s tablet form computer, has intel hd4000 graphics, should be fine

Sorry, I just assumed it was 800x640 might be something different entirely.

I got directx11 on my system, at least that’s what dxdiag says :slight_smile:

That’s exactly what I meant. A single place where everyone can download and get a nice simple guide to install ET.

Deleted the video folder (the one in the etmain folder), still no luck…

I got it to work! It seems that it was a Surface Pro problem.

I installed the newest graphics driver a while ago. The next SP (Or win8, not sure) update messed up the drivers. Found the issue on another forum.

Reinstalled the driver and it works now! :slight_smile: Thanks a lot for the help people!

So what’s the next step? Is there a server tool like in the old days or do you connect through the in game list? Or Splatterladder copy paste ip?
