W:ET keeps crashing! Help!

Ok this is quite a serious problem i have here… it’s quite lengthy so pls bear with me thx.
i downloaded RtW : ET from ausgamers and started playing, but i got this funny text when initializing the game itself :

i ALWAYS get this text in the grey console box when first starting the game. on subsequent times when i start ET without rebooting the com, the text goes like this :

ok so after this i find that i can still detect servers and join the game itself, but what is truly infuriating is that when i’m into the game, it ALWAYS hard crashes from any point of time after 30s. and if i’m lucky enough to make it to the end of each map, it will hard crash while i’m waiting for the next map. The infinite sound loop comes with it too.

Can someone who understands what’s happening please help me?

I’ve tried disabling PB but to no avail. I’ve tried reinstalling ET too. and also d/l-ing ET from another website. When that didn’t work, i updated my video drivers. Didn’t work.

and by the way, i don’t know why ET detected my CPU as P3 when mine’s a P4 2.0GHz. I have 320MB RAM and a GeForce 4 MX440 and DirectX 9.0. I have no antivirus software or any other programs running while i’m (trying) playing ET.

oh and by the way, i do not overclock my CPU and i’ve been experiencing no problems with all other games and applications.

The only 2 thoughts that immediately spring to mind are heat and power supply.

What rating is your power supply (the PSU). It’ll be written on the side of the PSU somewhere. For your set-up you should have at least 300W if not more. Even if you have, it doesn’t mean it’s not faulty.

You could also try taking a side panel off your PC to let some air in, see if it makes any difference. You could even try pointing a desktop fan (if you’ve got one) at it to help keep it cool. Your BIOS might even provide tools to allow you to monitor the CPU and case temperatures.

The reason ET reports your CPU as a P3 is because it’s based on the Quake3 engine, which was designed before the P4 came along. Anything greater than a P3 is reported as a P3.

ok…regarding my power supply it’s either 300W or 300+, it’s relatively new since i bought it less than a year ago. I remember because i built this com from a P3 casing and had to buy another power box that’s suited for P4 since the last one was incompatible with my P4 motherboard.

Regarding heat, i have 3 fans inside my CPU : one that came with the p4 processor chip, one that came with the GF4 MX440, and another system fan that i just installed today. I also took apart my CPU and cleared out a massive amount of dust…

YET when i started ET again, it hung on me after 10 minutes!

the com does work noticably better now after the spring cleaning, but not ET. since i got the check_com error message everytime (the one i posted earlier), shouldn’t it be a software error or some bug instead?

Possibly. In which case, rename the etconfig.cfg file in your profile folder (maybe etconfig.cfg.old or something) and then try playing again.

If all is good there’s something screwed up in your config, but I can’t imagine what. I’ve never been able to crash a game by screwing with a config, especially as ET doesn’t actually let you do very much in the way of dramatically altering settings.

The other thing it could be, I guess, is that ET itself is corrupt in some way. Try re-downloading and re-installing it.

Just noticed those in your original post. They don’t all look like original default ET files. Try moving them out of \etmain, one at a time and then playing ET. Maybe one of those is screwing you up.

ok… i uninstalled ET, and cleared every other file that’s related to it…

downloaded it from another download site (Jolt) and NOT using a download accelerator this time…

and reinstalled it.

now there’s no more funny file names.

but it still crashes.

the only other thing i did yesterday was to place a hi-powered industrial-type fan right beside my cpu, but it didn’t help things much.

Maybe i should ask around what does “unsafe” and “check_com crashed” mean in the ET startup console?

I remember there’s a problem with Intel chipsets for p4 and Nvidia/ATI graphic cards… maybe you have that problem.

My suggestion: Search for it on hardware forums, maybe there is an answer.

HEAT HEAT HEAT HEAT.

I have absolutely NO problem running anything but enemy territory on my box. Enemy Territory kept crashing though. I started running it with my case open (stale air kept accumulating), for a -10 degree celsius bonus, and et stop crashing. Get yourself some better cooling.

After installing rtcc.pk3, trainyard.pk3 and rhine2.pk3 I always also get these errors, however I haven’t bothered checking any further since ET still works fine, so I just thought it came from any one of those maps ?

mp_bin.pk3 is one of the original .pk3 files. Deleting it would not be wise.

haha… taking the casing off really does work wonders…

could play for a straight 3 days before it crashed once

at least it’s much more enjoyable now

one thing i noticed though…

during the time when i had problems, it occured most in the map ‘radar’

does it mean running through all these gadzillion of pixels of grass causes the CPU to overheat?

i took the side panel off and i has not crashed a single time yet.
looks like heat really was the problem, my CPU was melted together
with my cooler, lol. But i fixed it, and now it runs like a charm :clap:

Same issue where whole system shuts down after playing ET for 5 minutes to an hour. Narrowed it down heat on cpu. Seems like overheating GPU would only cause the application to hang or shut down not the whole system so looks like it is the CPU. While playing ET, the cpu temps soar over 55C.

Since I discovered this I have upgraded the stock fan and heat sink. No luck. Now my system is water cooled and runs around 43-44C at idle. Once ET is started the temps shoot up due the cpu being almost comletely utilized. I currently have the case open with an 18" fan blowing on MB and components. No luck still dies. Power supply is 450 watt.

Going to try dumbing the graphics down even more and switching to 16 bit colors to see if I have any luck or if it puts less of a burden on the system.

P4 2.4 gig HT
1 gig of ram DC
Geforce 5600 FX 256 megs ram
800Mhz FSB

All other games run great and do not cause the system to shut down. Only ET. Hope to find a fix soon.

I have the same problem :banghead:

My E.T. crashes =(. all the things are ok, the cpu is at a good temperature, my settings are the same as always, but now crashes… i have a idea of what could be the problem: i have patched my E.T., maybe is that.

So far is the only thing different on my pc, and it started crashing after patched E.T. :frowning:

OMG heat won’t let ET crash, i’ll help him, i have this also since i installed patch 1.02 after the crash or slowdown of ET in general, reboot go to main files and delete all custom files even the map cycle crap you down from joining a server, download the maps from servers (.zip files) restart ET and it will be gone.

If you’re hitting 44c idling with a water cooling system, you need to check the connection between your heat sink and your CPU. Fancy water cooling does nothing if it can’t absorb any heat.

Also, some cases run hotter if the side panel is removed. This is because the fans and such inside are designed to create airflow over the motherboard to help disperse heat by drawing in cooler air and expelling the warm stuff. Once you open the case the chassis fans are basically useless. Taking a big fan and blowing it at your motherboard doesn’t help much either. Your little cpu fan can’t push back against the big outside fan, so it can’t vent hot air off your heatsink.

My thing says the same thing when i start ET it says warning then it says crashed about 15 time then the gray screen starts up then the game crashes when i join a server so im going to open m case and try ET tonight
