W:ET Installer

(kashu) #1

Hey!

Since some people find it pretty difficult to install the game (with all the different patches, maps, etc.), I’m creating an installer for the old (but still great) W:ET.
It would contain the latest patch, the latest etpro mod, the most commonly used maps, etc.

I was wondering if I have the right to:

  1. make it.
  2. distribute it on the Internet (that would be free, of course).

Thanks in advance!

I believe someone was way ahead of you. Now all I need is to find a link…

that already exists :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t want to know if I should do it or not. I want to know if I have the right to.
btw, here is what it looks like : http://kingofet.free.fr/.
ETpack is a good thing, but I think my installer is closer to what people want (up-to-date, real installer, less useless files, etc.).

I don’t think SD is allowed to give any “Official” blessing on any of the installers, the fact they permit the download links on these forums is possibly an indication of what they think

yer I got the same question, where does SD draw the line?

Else it would be possible with todays installer scripts, to make a installer for all plattforms, bundled with the most used maps/mods. And tools.

Yes I read the license. As far as I understood section 4 of the license covers most.
So resulting in this: We are allowed to distribute et as long as it is unmodified and free of any charge;
What is there exactly meant?
For windows afaik you need 2 installers, and a a zip file to patch until 2.60b. So for being on legal side, we are only allowed to put the installers on a CD along with the zip… not even a custom readme is allowed to be add.

Yer I know there do allready exist some installers, but they ain’t legal as far as I can tell…

Else, I see there one legal way… like the big Linux distribution do it… not bundle the installer or anything on the CD … just have a installer script, which does download the needed files from internet and install them.
So the package to install ET, does only contain a script which does install it - but does not contain ET itself (gets downloaded after the user wishes so.).

Why even taking the time for this? Well … I allready had contact with law cause of another game, where I hosted stuff. And if I take the time to make such an installer it should be legal…

edit: there is also this “You agree tjhat you are obtaining a copy of the software via download only,…”
Is a CD containing the installer - which got downloaded … against the above phrase?

:S very complicated…
