voice commands

Yeh ive had a prety cool idea for sp games

i have seen this voice program on word some time ago,
it works by coverting your voice to text, you have to set it up to your voice but its pretty cool

anyway it turns out that for long documents with complex words you soon run into trouble, however for jsut the odd word or phrase it works a treat

btw this is for a 1st person shooter style game

in your hud you could have a place where the text your speeking apears, you would never need more than a screens lenghth in text

the four stages of the program run on this text

  1. The text is created from your speech
  2. A program runs on the individual words in your speech are analyzed and changed into ones the computer understands

(The game would not need to concern itself with the dictionary just a short list of words like medic, ammo, covery fire. So if your speech shows as “firre” then the program converts it to “fire” and alters this on your screen

  1. the program then takes meaning from this “give me covery fire”
workd out that you want teamates to fire on nearby enemys with heave supresion fire

seems a bit hit and miss that your speech will come out as exacly “give me covery fire”, but it would work like

give me covery fire
comand subject instruction

  1. then the game carries out the instruction and friendly AI’s give you covery fire (or fire on enemys near you with heavy inacurate fire so they take cover alowing you to move from cover to cover

in step three

give me covery fire
comand subject instruction

this would be made dynamic so

give red team ammo
comand subject instruction

so then nearby teametes give the red team ammo, this is a simple version of course as the more advanced would be

petter give red team ammo

so then the AI petter gives the red team ammo

for the mapper they need to create new AI’s for each map so in the key valuse in the editor they enter the keys

call_name
call_alt
call_alt2
call_alt3

the call name is the one the program that runs with the map looks for in speach
the alt speach is for names the player may try to call the AI by

e.g. sergent moody, moody, sergent, sarge

as long as names that would be complex to recongnise for the user and the computer are acoided then any problems should be

waypoint entity (given names and alt names like the AI)

a marker placed on the map that act like a wapoint so you would use the comands

petter goto tree

suport fire

The voice comands could be used for suport fire e.g.
pointing the item like binoculars at a brush genarates a 6 figure grid referance like 274 923, the player than can say

artilry requested on
i need artilary on
give me artilary

then read out the referance “one” “nine”…
then a sound file will play infrming the player on the status of his request, if it has been done of there is insuficent suport for his request

this could be used for things like arstrikes and supple drops

finaly voice triggers

the other use could be for entities that listen for key words of phrases whent he player is in a sertain distance of them then if the entity hears this then it trigger its target

so that will have names and alt names too

it could be a good feature but you do realise how reliant on CPU speed voice recognition programs are?
ppl would need a monster PC to be able to run ET (at acceptable framerates) and have the voice recognition working at the same time, inbuilt voice comms would be a better option IMO if it became “standard” for online games

That idea may be sooner than you think

true bondy but the type of idea i was on about only focuses the voice comand idea on only a small part of what they would run if they were say part of a user interface on a operation system

then all the logical comparisions would be done with text and not sound files whitch are a great deal smaller and easy to work with for the computer

something like this will proboaly happen soon with the increase in graphics with doom, sound files dont need any improvement, movement/physics are good (althought thatere are some things i would like to see added). so realy if the games market is going to keep its market its going to have to find new ways to improve there games and this is one, they can hardly make the graphics better as few games can affor to buy all these upgrades needed to suport good framerates in gammes like d3
