Video Settings 'cost' question

(scungili) #1

Hi,

So, I’ve tracked my ET crashing problem down to my GPU overheating… My interim solution has been to set all video settings to their minimums, and pointed a big fan inside my case. Im wondering if someone can identify the most GPU intensive settings in the list below, so I can turn up some of the other less intensive ones: (my settings in boldface)

Resolution 640/800/1024/etc
Color Depth 16/32
Texture Detail L/M/H
Geometric Detail L/M/H
Texture Quality 16/32
Texture Filter Bi/Tri
Detail Textures Y/N
Depth Buffer 16/24
Dynamic Lighting Off/Single/Multi

Im thinking Color Depth is the most intensive, but am not sure.

Thanks

I would, the problem is my mobo only supports AGP 2x and there aren’t many AGP 2x compatible cards faster than the GF2 pro… Can someone just identify the most taxing video settings?

I plan to upgrade to a faster system at some point, but for now this is all I’ve got.

I think you need John Carmack and some nVidia tech to identify what’s causing it to overheat. Trial and error sounds like the only solution until you get a new card. :disgust:

I think the only way to find out would be trial and error. Lower all the settings, and if that fixes the problem, start working your way up.

However, I would stronly suggest improving your cooling instead. I drilled a bunch of holes in the side of my case and mounted a case fan which blows directly over the video card. If you already have a fan blowing on the video card, maybe your case itself needs more ventilation. Make sure you vid card HS and fan are free of dust and the turns freely.

You could also try underclocking your vid card.

Hi scungili,

It seems that your system is well balanced. It means that you can’t achieve more speed by changing just one part of it. So it’s time for a total upgrade ! :chef:

most new cards are backwards compatable to AGP 2x tho
