Video problem

(scav_engr) #1

Hey. Long time tech here, into a problem I can’t solve that doesn’t show up except in ET and another game MCM2 I run. Setup: XP SP1 (haven’t needed sp2 yet), P4 1.6, 512mb, ATI Radeon 8500/128mb, SBLive 5.1. History: After a year or so on what became a well loaded/used image, trying to fix another problem (video codec related, I do alot of encoding, etc) this (shown by images below) problem came up in ET (and the other game, same thing.)

Since this showed up out of the blue I did the regular stuff- reapplied SP1, Directx 9c, video drivers, etc, but couldn’t fix the problem. With no fix, was fairly confident just had some bug I couldn’t whack and a reformat/install of xp was ‘time.’ Did this, reloaded all stuff- xp/sp1, dx9c, ati video driver, etc, and now on clean install of os/ET, problem still exists. The only thing that sticks out before I reformattted that I had done before the problem that shows in ET I noticed was I re-installed windows media player 10 to try to solve a long running browser plug-in prob and a prior goofy load of wimp10. Prior to messing around with the wimp10 re-install, never had a problem, but can’t say wimp10 has anything to do with things, just a ‘last’ thing done/worked with. Anything wrong with wimp10 for ET or video ‘issues’ in known problems? :???:

Running on what’s been a good solid machine, Asus mb w/the ATI (I’ve had a good running history with Asus,) I could be blatently overlooking ‘something,’ but I’m out of options. My core os is now a good load, I tweak services and don’t have anything of a no-brainer sticking out, or things shut off that shouldn’t be, etc. Thing is/was, all was good for this past year before my problem showed up in ET, and now with a reformat/load of xp/sp1, dx9c, and all the same drivers, versions, etc, the problem still exists. ??? One thing I did do (I could have left it out) was I did install wimp10 before I loaded ET on this new format/reload to see if the wimp10 was the problem from earlier on, and usually I wouldn’t think any ‘player’ would affect a game like ET, but ms does alot under the hood of the os, etc. Well, I got lucky, new os load and the wimp10 thing?- Problem still exists. I didn’t expect any of this at all let alone a wimp10 load to cause any ‘issues’ on a clean install of it. My next only option is to reformat again, and try ET straight out before any wimp anything, etc.

Decided to post here to see if anyone might notice something in this post or by images below. Might I be onto a hdw problem? No idea. Never had a problem like this before that wasn’t solved with a reformat, etc. No other video output on this new load, and same as before- desktop, video player(s), video anything, shows any issues but only when I run ET and that other game. At this point software wise, there kinda isn’t anything I haven’t done in order, out of order- anything like this that usually would ‘fix’ something like this as a display issue. Not sure if splashdamage boards here are ok with putfile links, was one way I could get screenshots out, haven’t been around this baord for awhile. I put up 3 shots and no matter what video I change in ET (never had to before, run 32bit/24bit, bi/trilinear, -usually full tilt settings at 1024x768) can’t whack the problem.

Appreciate any replies.

Ugh, thats nasty.

Off the top of my head, I would say your video card is damaged. Do you have another you can put in and see if the problems go away?

I had an ATI 9600 Pro, that when I loaded Max Payne 2 would radiate lines of pixels from the center of the screen, and have block areas that would flash. In other games this problem did not show up, and I never figured out if the card was bad when trying to use DirectX 9.0c routines or just because the game was so graphically intensive it brought out the problem, but it was definately a faulty video card and replacing it fixed my problems.

looks like your video card may be overheating, check your fans, ventilation etc

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it. I put on a new load of everything again, all drivers first, no wimp10 (never really thought…), and just ET- problem still exists. I’ve got open slots top/bottom around card and fan is spinning, only thing left I have to do is pull the card for a visual inspection. (a bleeding cap, something, don’t expect to ‘see’ much.) Machine usually runs 24/7, have now shut down overnight and on boot run ET- problem still exists. If a bad card and something went toast- can live with it, it’s been a good card, 3 years probably, maybe something else might come up (doubt it at this point.) This is my only AGP w/no others to swap out. Thanks for the vid views and ur guys replies.
