video mode and picmip

({}Yojimbo) #1

I have had a really anoying problem the last few weeks (dunno if it is etpro related or not). Often when I start ET I get a question: “Uset this video mode? Reverting to previous setting in… seconds”. If I don’t do anything it set the screen resolution really low. In-game whenever I push Escape I get the same annoying question.

Related to this is that I simple cannot get the game to start at picmip 2, whatever I change in my config and the autoexec it starts at picmip 1 and I always have to do a vid_restart. Any ideas on what is going on here?

(pgh) #2

shrug

Even after using the .bat and forcing r_mode 3 and picmip 2 via command line and all seeing eye ET STILL persists in loading with the completely wrong gfx regardless of profiles being there/used. Ive just gave up completely… if it wants played at 1024 ill leave it there and when im playing scrims etc then ill just bump it down ingame to 640.

Delete any instances of a file called profile.pid you can find in \etmain\profiles<yourname> and/or <modname>\profiles<yourname>. That should sort all your “reverting to something I didn’t want” problems.

(pgh) #4

Tried it all at least. Seems to me me gfx settings are hardcoded in for startup

(Yes, sarcasm)

(Kendle) #5

I use r_picmip 3 (set in my autoexec.cfg) and I’ve never had a problem. I like to watch demos in high detail so I use r_picmip 0 (I have a high-detail config that gets loaded by Seismovision), so I have to re-exec my match config when I next play (and do a /vid_restart to load the graphics settings (I have a key bound for this, to make it easier)). But once a particular setting is set, it never reverts to anything else.

ET only reverts to default if profile.pid exists. Other than that it uses whatever is in etconfig.cfg (relative to the mod the server you join uses).

My advice would be copy your default etconfig.cfg to \etmain and rename it mysettings.cfg, then start a local server, and in the console type:- /exec mysettings.cfg followed by /vid_restart. Then delete ALL instances of etconfig.cfg you can find APART FROM the one in \etmain\profiles<yourname> AND delete ALL instances of profile.pid you can find. That should sort it.

BUt it doesnt. :stuck_out_tongue:

(squadjot) #7

one fix  imo

oke…delete the “etpro/profiles” and “shrubET/profiles” (delete the entire content of folders)…so u only have your original “etmain/profiles” folder left… (mod dir’s will be regenrated later, dont worry) (NOTE: IM TALKING ONLY ABOUT THE PROFILE FOLDERS HERE)

startup the game in NORMAL mode (not mod)…and run all your settings… (by execing ur setup files or simply do it manually through console)…

THEN u SHUTDOWN game…entirely…

restart game…and check if ure variables still there…(the ones uve just have set)…then restart in a MOD… your settings should follow…

always make sure that this “etmain/profiles/[yourname]/etconfig.cfg” is as u want it… its THAT file the game will use as preference if anything fucks up…

(Kendle) #8

SquadJot, I’d be interested to know if that works whereas my previous suggestion doesn’t, as the only thing that’s different about your suggestion compared to mine is I said delete \etpro\profiles…\etconfig.cfg whereas you’re saying delete the whole folder.

Bear in mind the folder (in the case of ETPro) contains client-side files which will have to be downloaded again if you delete them, plus any demos you record go into the mod’s \demo folder. I’ve got 100’s of Mb’s of demos in \etpro\profiles…\demos, I’d be gutted if I accidentally lost them!

(squadjot) #9

im at work…but ill explain later…lets see if it works

any ways… u say u got 100’s of megabytes in your etpro/profiles folder??? …oke…THATS weird,… :D…ire demos is saved in etpro/demos… i think u either mess things up…or just misunderstood me… if its because of my bad gramma, i apologize in advance…

(edited my post with the note)

(pgh) #10

Demos either save to /etpro/demos or etmain/demos I thought?

Tried and tested and all me demos for either profile currently in use and using /record manually and /autorecord.

(Kendle) #11

Oops, SJ methinks you’re right and I’ve just made a prat of myself. :weird:

…although, (desperately trying to rescue the situation) I’d still be insterested to know why deleting <modname>\profiles<yourname> works whereas deleting the only file in it doesn’t.

/gets coat…

({}Yojimbo) #12

First of all, many thanks for all the suggestions. Unfortunatley none of them helped :banghead: (I have been one of them laughing at people who cannot get their configs to work… so sorry God). I have used a batch file to delete the profile before ET starts, I have tried to delete all profiles, I have an autoexec with my config etc.

Just to add to the mystery. When I type \exec myconfig.cfg in console, it says that picmip will be changed upon restart (or somehting like that), so I do a vid_restart but then the freaking picmip is still at 1??? (and yes I checked that it should be 2, by typing r_picmip in console before doing the vid_restart).

And how about the Confirm video mode?

/me starts to cry soon

(squadjot) #13

hmm… Yojimbo… sounds strange…either u didnt do what i said…or else ur ET is fecked … j/k

(also note, SOME variables cannot be set by a vid_restart only…)

How do you set your variables…?

  1. by exec’ing a setup file ?
  2. Edit the etconfig.cfg ?
or 3. set each variable through console ?

U got any mysterious vars going on :P? …try simple exmaple… like u mentioned the r_picmip…

well…what i would do… (to really break it down, maybe also some redundandt stuff… but again to be sure…just do it :D)
note: before u do this.,make a backup of your config… (if u like) oke…here goes

  1. Be sure to have a file, that contains all the changes u wanna add to your game (cvars, scripts). (ex “mysetup.cfg”)
  2. Open ET (no mod mode) , and write cvar_restart in console…and then QUIT et.
  3. Start ALL over… (meaning…delete ALL profile folders, and all etconfig.cfgs(also those in etmain))
  4. disable/remove any of the autoexec.cfg’s (for now, just so i know that things aint going on there)
  5. Open ET again …now you should have succeded to open a fresh new ET with pure default settings, make a profile and continue… setup the very basics, then quit ET and reopen.
  6. now…set a variable… DONT EXEC THE WHOLE SETUP YET …set variable r_picmip 3 by \seta r_picmip 3 (and press enter :P)
  7. close game entirely, quit…then restart, STILL in no-mod-mod…and see if it remembers the r_picmip 3 setting… if it does NOT… then i give up…
  8. IF it remembers…now try loading a mod…and see if the setting is transferred to the mod…
  9. close game…open AGAIN in no-mod-mode, exec your whole script, var stuff…and start doing what uve always done from there…thigs should be working from here…

if it suddently fucks up after uve loaded your complete setting…i would guess u have a bad setup…

and last…if u dont more or less do exactly what i write…i cant guarantee nothing

if u still mean that this does not work…pm me, im sure we can work it out step by step over a chat…

(edit)

I may add… what really matters…is if ure running in a mod or not… if u delete the files metioned…and that u dont reuse your old etconfig.cfg as “setup”…

when i write “open ET”…i mean you doubleclicking the default EXE icon in game folder…(or non-modded shortcut)…NOT trough a game launcher (ASE/pathfinder)… duh  i know…but i have to be sure  (also for the noobs out there mayeb reading this post )

(squadjot) #14

@ kendle …no  i actually say the same…only delete the whole folder is just…easier to understand i THOUGHT (hrmm :P)…anyways.it was mostly to be sure he deleted any trace of MOD configs…and it was actually not my main point , my main points was to spell out that…he should try run in default ET mode (not any mod)…AND…that he should try QUITTING game insted of just vid_restart (as it wont work for surtain vars, com_hunkmegs is one of them)

greets jot

Squadjot: I want to marry you

I followed you instructions and started up my old config, and the same problem persisted. So clearly something was fucked up in my custom cnfig (that I load with autoexe). So simple solution: start all over with new custom config. No more strange things with picmp or video mode (hmmm, maybe that it the same). So thanks a lot!!

(Fusen) #16

squadjot I’ve got something to add to your post… delet the contents of /shrubET/ folder then make the folder read only… and have a nice etpro life =]
