There is no point the soldier with the thompson or the main axis gun. You can just be a field ops with the same gun only you can call in artillery strikes and give yourself ammo. I think that the thompson should be replaced with the venom since that gun was awesome, and it would serve a point.
Venom should be brought back
Exactly. I am very disappointed that SD repeated that RTCW mistake. Why make something an option which serves NO purpose whatsoever? Some players seem to think soldiers are more “powerful” in some way, that’s the only explanation I have why people choose to be a soldier with a SMG.
You don’t have the option to “spawn with half health” or “spawn with no ammo” either - it serves no purpose, so it’s not available as an option. Soldiers and SMG’s should be no different.
This is the reason for the smg soldier.
and in my opinion I prefer the MG42 because i think it looks better, is more suited to the game and works better than the venom.
Also i think the only way the venom is coming back is if some1 made a mod with it in.

Heh. Why not go field ops then -> basically unlimited ammo to practice with?

Because someone new to the game won’t know what a Field Ops is, and may get pestered by people who want ammo… ?
A soldier with a SMG has become one of my favorites, SMG of course as my 2nd weapon.
Kinda fun to ask for ammo and have a fieldops look at ya like “your a soldier with a SMG- no ammo for you”… Then Ya wip out the MG42 or another heavy weapon…
The MG42, I have found to be far superior to the Venom, especially at the 2,3,4 Heavy weapon levels. I usually mortar my way up a few skill levels and then change to MG42.
Also depending on the server limitations, the SMG may be the only gun left available to choose as a soldier, but you can almost always find another weapon on the ground. (the limitations also limits strikes for fieldops, so that class is kinda out except for ammo; covert/eng is still there; medic - well the “mystery gib” get pretty frustrating., so a soldier w a SMG on a hunt for a gun maybe the choice.)
If anyone in splashdamage brings back that fictional hunk of shite I personally will call a vote and have them kicked off the planet.

And would that be sooo bad? If they are FO, there is the chance that they come across the ammo packs by scrolling through their weapons and learn something new. Why allow soldiers to choose SMG’s just to not confuse other clueless people? Call for ammo - if you don’t get some concentrate on playing. The amount of confusion is minimal and doesn’t impact gameplay. Pestering a random FO (who might be a n00b OR might charge for artillery OR might have spilled their drink over their keyboard etc.) -> waste of time.
Last time I checked you don’t design gameplay mechanics around the behaviour of people who didn’t get it yet (people who “pester” FO’s) and don’t even take the time to read the manual (SMG soldiers). Might seem n00b friendly, but in my books it isn’t. If you disallow soldier/SMG you effectively make new players learn the game quicker, you kinda force 'em to.
If you allow it, some people might just like being able to “shoot at things” and having no responsibilty towards their team so much that they STAY soldier/SMG. All in all I think the way it currently is does more harm than good.
The MG42 is a very good replacement for the venom.
The fact that a SMG is there though, shouldn’t mean we need a different weapon.
Does it really harm you to have a smg there?
Also… Do you know how many times I have seen a noob going as a SMG soldier, when someone tells him, be a leut, its better. Then the noob becomes a leut, and blows his team away with a airstrike.
Ya… That helped…
Don’t overdramatize. Wiping out the WHOLE team with one airstrike… that would have to be a very stupid team.
How often per n00b does that happen? Okay, I have to admit the servers I usually play on are 16-20 players. And on those I’d rather have a few players wiped out once or twice (-> BINGO, the noob now knows what an airstrike/coloured smoke is), than having that “dead weight” for 3-6 maps.
And hey, what about a clueless SMG soldier running into friendly airstrike after friendly airstrike, because they don’t know what the smoke means? I think you actually provided an argument for my case.

I’m speaking from experience - recent experience: I’ve been coaching a friend of mine today who is new to ET, and it’s the first FPS he’s ever played. There are a LOT of things to get to grips with, things that it’s clear that you have already mastered, but it’s equally clear that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to play as a newbie.
The SMG soldier is a good default basic player. S/he can still kill, with minimal interfence to other players. Give the newbies a break, for crying out loud - we were all one once.
I’m usually very willing to take a break form playing to show other players stuff or use the chat to explain things. I’m not expecting a new player to get to grips with everything instantly, you’re barking up the wrong tree on that one. I’m just saying if you throw them in cold water they might thank you for it later, because it saved them time.
I have seen a player getting kicked because they were an SMG soldier two times now, and countless other times they were ridiculed. I have not seen a FO getting kicked ONCE because they didn’t know how to give ammo.
Why make something the default choice which you won’t use once you learned a thing or two about the game? When learning a new language, you don’t learn a simplified version first and the real thing later - because it would do you a disservice to do so. You learn the real thing right from the start.
It’s not about not giving newbies a break, it’s about “tough love” if you catch my drift
What is their slot number? I got my pb_power points at the ready!
The venom was kinda cool but I much prefer the MG42. I see no reason to go back other than nostalgia. And that is a pretty weak reason. As for SMGs and the soldier, I dont’ know why anyone worries about it. I assume that you just select the weapon you actually want. Why worry about some other player and their selection? If they are such a newb that they don’t know that the SMG is generally the weakest main weapon available to the soldier, do you think they would be any value to your team if they chose the flamethrower instead?
Let them learn and practice. Encourage the newbs, for they are tomorrow’s clan elites!

I think if a n00b was that interested in how the game worked they would either read the manual or ask questions during the game. So if someone wants to learn the game by playing as a no-worries SMG Soldier, more power to them. Kicking them off the server would probably just discourage someone; worst case turn them into a future griefer. Some people learn best just by doing their own thing. Short of a clan match you always expect two or three people on your team to be pretty new to the game. So its not like a huge surprise or loss if you have a few SMG Soldiers running amok.
I like the idea of n00bs using the SMG Soldier to get the feel of the game too. No one depends on the class; its not like you’ll have people whining that medics don’t revive people or field ops don’t drop ammo. I’m sure once a n00b figures out the basics they’ll start experimenting with the other classes, reading the manual, or asking questions. And its not like their time as a soldier is useless. They get the feel for both the maps and how to handle the SMG, two things that will easily cross over to the other classes.
Kick people because they’re tking. Kick AFK players to make room for someone who will play. But don’t kick someone just because they’re new and not entirely with the program.
