New PC after all these years. Have a decent config going, balancing appearance and FPS, to the extent that (according to com_showfps 1) I am getting 200-300+ FPS in most situations while on foot. I am using timing method 0, btw.
(Yes, I know those rates of FPS are way overkill if true, and that com_showfps might not even be telling the exact truth!, but these are my baseline values for purposes of this discussion.)
When I get into vehicles, tho – :stroggbanana:and I do like to fly!:stroggbanana: – the com_showfps readout drops, to the point that I am seeing some "180"s in there, and possibly even some double-digit numbers (90?). To be honest it’s really hard to read the com_showfps readout when the displayed value is apparently changing once per frame!
But more importantly than the technical display, the “feel” in vehicles is just way less smooth, like it’s giving me a much slower framerate than what com_showfps is indicating.
I remember the early discussions of how the anims were locked to 30fps (right?) and it feels like something like this is going on. Or also how there is no net prediction in vehs, and maybe this could be the cause.
I realize something is going on in terms of throttling mouse input when turning a turret, for example, or steering a plane – to compare to a foot soldier: you can spin your mouse as fast as you want and on-foot, your player will follow it, but in a turret or car or plane, you can only turn it “so fast”. But it feels/looks like this throttling effect is also killing the smoothness of FPS, and it’s a real bummer.
Can someone explain what is going on here, and if it’s possible to change/improve this situation?
If you are one of those ppl (you know who you are! ;)) who are “elite” players and have elite hand-crafted config: is it possible to get true 60+fps smoothness and feel when flying/driving?
