Various Questions

(DarkangelUK) #1

Now I know we’re very fresh in the development cycle, and I greatly appreciate and expect that there are some things you can’t reveal at this point in time, or simply haven’t discussed yet, but I thought I’d throw a few questions out there regarding the future of the project.

Game Modes: We’ve noticed the unusual for SD addition of TDM, I was wondering if there were plans for any other game modes in future? Control point TF2 style play, bomb plant CS/S&D play, CTF etc. I’m just curious is all, generally when I want a change of pace from the usual run and gun, I like to play some Search and Destroy.

Demo Recording: I saw that you mentioned you record demos of the matches, Can I take that as a sign that full demo recording will be available closer to full release?

Comp Scene/DirtyTV (ooerr missus): Given that this is shaping up to be a fine comp shooter, has any thought been given to TV servers and comp tool integration?

Mod/Mapping Tools: (you’re probably hating me by this point) I think the subject line speaks for itself so I’ll leave it at that.

Server Browser: Will we get to keep some form of the external server browser that’s on the launcher? I love having a tool I can load up to view games in progress without having to go into the game itself.

Ok I think I’m done.

I can’t give you concrete answers on these since this is a constantly evolving project, but for now:

Game Modes: CTF, S&D, DOM etc. are all possible and definitely something we’re considering. I think we’ll just need to see how TDM goes and what players are asking for.

Demos: Yes. We’ll definitely be having server-side demos although we can’t support client-side as far as I know. This means we’ll need to set up a way for users to grab demos after a match which is a significant amount of work.

Comp Scene: We recognise the opportunity here but I can’t say much more than that :stuck_out_tongue:

Mod/Mapping Tools: This is something a lot of people here want to provide but how this will fit in with our other plans we still need to figure out.

Server Browser: This will probably only ever exist in the launcher. Players accessing it while playing is something we’re investigating.

Cool no problem. I was that caught up in the normal gameplay last night that I completely forgot there was the option for TDM (a good sign I think :P)

Do you know how much control you have over these demos when viewing? Freecam, jumping between players pov, screenshot dump, scripted cams etc. The guide video obviously had some free flying/guided cameras, was this done in game or via a separate program?

I can only assume this is due to the f2p status?

I’m hoping this isn’t because you want to bring in matchmaking? Sorry, just had bad experiences with matchmaking and much prefer a browser, or ideally both to cover all avenues.

The demo & spectator functionality is still being designed/worked on. We currently have freecam, player switching and playback speed control but not much more than that.

Working in mod/map tools into a f2p game isn’t straightforward, however there are examples out there of it being done well

The server browser will always exist but we are planning on adding matchmaking at some point too.

Awesome, thank you very much!

Will there also in the server browser be an option to view history of previous servers you’ve played,
and also an add to favourites button?

(jRAD) #7

That’s certainly something we’re looking into.

You can add favourites by clicking the Star icon next to the server’s name.

The guide video was created using UnrealEd’s Matinee camera tracks so supporting that for demo editing would depend on what mod/mapping tools we released.

We do support the ability for adding new camera modules in-game though so it’s feasible we could add support for more spectator and demo camera modes down the line. So if you have any suggestions they can be taken into consideration when reviewing future plans.

(zenstar) #9

Just my 2 cents here: But I do love some good CTF and King of the Hill matches
They can always have a flavour worked in (capture the opposing team’s data / engineers fix and download some data) but they’re always fun variants IMO.

Generally the idea is to progress the games popularity through user created content, and the more freedom the user has with the camera for capturing their impressive frag or kill streak from an alt angle or with a flashy flying camera then the better the outcome and reception. Being able to create a scripted camera path is fine as is, but also being able to accurately pinpoint that camera by knowing where the player is at the time you create it is even better. A lot of the time with the older W:ET and ETQW methods, you had to do some guess work to get the camera in the right place to match the action. I’ll blaspheme here but CoD’s theatre mode is great for this, of course they’ve had many years and many millions of $$ to work on it. At this point jRAD is probably resting his face in his palm, but well, it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Of course the discussion then moves onto getting the ingame content onto an editable video format, can it render to avi, export to screenshots as specified fps or will we rely on external software such as fraps?

Regarding the server browser I am missing a way to see who is on a server. Also current map time remaining would be nice.

(SockDog) #12

Nice questions DA

Modes: Would like DM and CTF (or spins on CTF) and something like S&D would be nice. As DA said, a change of pace is nice and keeping people playing when they want that is better than them going off to another game. I’m guess classes could have abilities removed on some of these to just keep different weapon load outs.

Mods/Maps: Hopefully this can be supported in a way that doesn’t corrupt the F2P model. Also the use of mutators would allow some variety of rules to be implemented from the get go.

Movie/Demo: I’m terrible at making them but agree it’s a great tool to keep the content quality high where people are prepared to put in the effort. That’s not to say that having some excellent spectating tools wouldn’t also be good for the legion of gamers who name put out youtube content.

Server Browser: Liked the thing in BLOPS2 that shows the number of players playing a particular mode. Could be broken into region and global numbers. If there is matchmaking then we’ll need a clean method to group up beforehand and of course there should always be the option of just browsing servers.

Clans: Sounds like there is something planned here but just from history I’d have to ask for the tools to drive this to be there from the get go.

(tokamak) #13

What about Steam’s Workshop and Blizzard’s Arcade market? Really difficult to find a right system for this but it would be very rewarding.

(Rex) #14

I got also a question: Why is there no prone in the game?

(dommafia) #15

I don’t think prone would fit the game imo.

(light_sh4v0r) #16

Now that we have female playermodels for the first time ever in an SD game, we’ll need to find a solution for teabagging with em…

(DarkangelUK) #17

It’s called ‘flapslapping’ (copyright DAUK)

(SockDog) #18

Not HappyFlapping?

(iwound) #19

what? this is free, and how does this affect mapping etc?

(dommafia) #20

Hadn’t realized this was going to be f2p. Where’s the official word on that? Don’t think I read that anywhere. I’m neutral on the subject as I’ll play it as long as the game is good no matter which way they go.
