As I and my teammates have very bad pings when we try to play ET on a server outside of our country one member of our team has allowed me to try to use a socket proxy running on his server. But anytime I tried to connect to some server it was always awaiting for connection. That’s why I ask you, please help me how to configure a socket proxy, and give me advice which program (dante, squid, etc…) we should use. Does this feature of ET work at all? Does anyone know anything about this feature? Please help me. Many thanks in advance.
Using socket server for playing ET
I would suspect that your packets aren’t being routed properly. I don’t know if et uses ports other than the 2986x server port(etc), so the proxy server that you are using has to forward those to you correctly, just like the file transfer problems that you get with routers and some chat clients.
In what way would a socket proxy help you? Your total ping to the server will be the same (or higher), and even if the ping displayed in game is lower this only means that antilag won’t work correctly.
Using socket server would be good to avoid to be routed the ISP. Some ISPs in our country route the packeges via New York when we want to connect a foreginer server. It’s very annoying that we are in Hungary and try to play on a German server, but we have really bad pings because of faulty routing of the ISP. If we want to play on a server inside of our country routing works properly anyway.
Azarael: I dont think that the routing of our socket proxy routes packages properly, as we can use it for browsing web and connecting to ftp servers and when we do this it works well.
I feel like answer but havent got any lucid idea of this topic
C’on dudes, nobody knows what kind of proxy does ET need ?
We r talking abt 2 different things. People say a correct portforward (eg. by iptables under unix) is working fine. You can use it instead of using a socket proxy. But only in one way: if the forwarder machine can accept the incoming packages on the same port as the remote ET server working on (eg.27960) It’s possible I’m wrong but I wasn’t able to solve this problem on differents ports. (eg. proxy:39000 -> server:27960)
This was you were talking about. But I can’t use portforward 'coz my ports are closed below 35000. I can’t open them. So I’ll continue to find a working solution with socket proxy…
I can only speculate because I don’t know how that proxy works. Anyway, take the example of IM programs that are behind a router. Being behind a router doesn’t usually interfere with normal activities like browsing or ftp, but just try to get msn incoming file transfers working properly using Trillian. I don’t know how the et connection protocol works, but the two problems seem like they may be similar.
