using rtcw models

(SuperC) #1

hey i was just wondering if it is possible to use rtcw models in et, and how does one go about that?

(Black Death) #2

It has already been answered. If I remember correctly, you can’t use them because of copyright issues.

edit: Whoah I’m fast

(SuperC) #3

why copyright, they come from same compagny :???:

(chavo_one) #4

You have to buy RtCW, in order to have access to the models, textures, etc available to it. No one had to pay for ET. Therefore, if you distribute RtCW property with ET maps, you are essentially giving away that stuff to non-paying gamers. So you are stealing from Activision.

(SuperC) #5

damm cheap ass multinationals :frowning:

(pwillard) #6

You talking about yourself, right?

(SuperC) #7

no activision whos to cheap and money greedy to let us use models from rtcw

(ThanTastic) #8

Don’t u mean - Activision who is so cheap and greedy they gave us a great FREE game!

(SuperC) #9

but still…i have the nagging feeling that we will have to pay sometime for Et in one form or another :disgust:

You have a free game to create content for and you are bitching because you cannot use content from other games. Try using the existing content and learn how to map for ET FIRST.

uhm just make custom textures and models m8
that way u bring originality into the map and then player dont always so those same old dull textures

Umm, what about the maps that people have sweated for in the past year or so, and instead of compiling it for RTCW, now want to compile it for ET?? Oh, thats right…scratch that map, and scratch another mapper from mapping for ET. MOH and BF1942 can all map for all their expansion packs…ET is basically a free expansion pack…I think its absurd not to be able to use available resources to make FREE maps for a FREE game. Im in this situation right now with my map…do I waste the past year or so of hard work and effort and forget about my current map, or go ahead and finish it up for ET with RTCW resources?? Hmmm, tough question there…not. :bash:

(lennyballa) #13

it isn’t that hard to replace all the textures and models if u use the replace function…

(ziege) #14

If you made an RTCW map, release it for RTCW. Fairly simple.

I think it’s absurd that you’re complaining you can’t steal textures from other games. You can use ‘available resources’ if you want - you just can’t blatently rip and steal from other games.

No, its not that simple…I dont play regular RTCW anymore, so why would I release it for classic RTCW?? Also, the scripting has changed for it as well.

Its also a problem for other mappers, from what Ive been reading, who want to release their RTCW maps for ET, but now, supposedly cant. I think they should be allowed to recompile their maps for ET…it would be nice to play Tram or Black Forest with mines and mortars. :disgust:

(ildon) #16

if you were smart you would just add/update objectives to take advantage of the ET additions and retexture your map (you can still use freely available texture sets that are NOT from rtcw, you know) and you’d already be like 50 steps ahead of anyone making an ET map from scratch.

but instead you just troll every thread with the word “copyright” in it.

nice.

I never got involved with the original discussions about copyright and RTCW content, but I am now

Copyright law - IP copyright - an item is automatically copyrighted as IP copyright as long as the creator can prove they are the original creators if this work. If however, someone comes along and uses their work as a base for constructing new content, then the new content can be attributed to the new creator providing that the content is sufficiently different that it no longer brings to mind the original content. So in the case of textures, heavily modifying the originals to something new would avoid IP issues.

The other aspect of copyright is profit. When releasing someone else’s content in a free product, the original creator has to be able to prove that your releasing of his content is somehow damaging his profits, otherwise there is no legal issue (unless you attempt to claim the content as your own). It is very difficult to prove that the release of a few textures or sound effects from RTCW will cause people not to buy the game, especially given the age and current low sales rate of the game.

Finally, there is written information in the documentation stating that any mods, maps and other RTCW/ET content you release is automatically the property of Activision/ID. They allow you to release this content for free only. This means that they are giving a precedence where you are allowed to release their content for free as it will better the games they have created/released. This being the beauty of mods. Therefore, by releasing additional content for activision products you are in fact improving activion’s reputation/standing in the PC community and are therefore improving potential future sales of both RTCW and other games they may release.

Now to me, this seems like they would have a hard time enforcing copyright laws unless you don’t give the original creators of the borrowed contant due credit.

(greekdish) #18

Have you ever built a map yet?? Then you would know NOTHING is ever simple. If Im smart…ok tough guy, show me your wonderful masterpiece of a map. Calling me a troll?? Ive been working on my map for over a year, and I have a right to my opinion on this issue, so if you dont like it, kiss off. I already said I updated my objectives you non educated fool. Retexturing my map will take ages, and I already liked the way my map looked before…now I have to go redo everything?? Dont you see how stupid this entire issue is about copyright BS?? Im trying to help out the game and community by making new maps, yet you call me a troll. Whatever.

(ziege) #19

BECAUSE YOU MADE IT FOR RTCW. If you didn’t want to play or release a map for RTCW then you shouldn’t have started. If you want to convert it, go ahead, you just want copyright laws to bend around your lazyness.

Its also a problem for other mappers, from what Ive been reading, who want to release their RTCW maps for ET, but now, supposedly cant. I think they should be allowed to recompile their maps for ET…it would be nice to play Tram or Black Forest with mines and mortars. :disgust:

The only person I’ve read saying this is you (about 4 posts in different threads). Other people were talking about the fact that if you use the textures then it messes up other mappers Radiant config and we end up using them too by accident. If you want to release your map that bad, why don’t you just do it FFS.

(SuperC) #20

wow…the point off this topic wasnt for you guys to tell each other that they are idiots :???: :eek2:
