Can I use a USB Gamepad controller with Enemy Territory?
Thanks
Why would you want to do that?
I don’t know for sure, but i guess it can be done
Yeah I guess it would work, but… don’t. Just don’t. Although I suppose it would be a bit better than a joystick.
I’ve spent my entire life using hand-held controllers (Nintendo, Play Station, etc) and I find them a lot easier to use than a mouse and keyboard.
I picked up a USB Game Pad and tried it out. I can’t seem to get it to work. Do I need to download a patch or something?
Thanks!
I don’t really know for sure. I do know, however, that I’m a horrible-freakin’-shot with the mouse and keyboard. I would like to try out the controller. That said, I still can’t get the USB gamepad to work. Any suggestions?
You might have to enable joystick support in game by setting in_joystick 1 You will also have to bind gamepad buttons to whatever controls you want (which you should be able to do in the menu)
I’m not completely sure joystick support works in ET, having never tried it. You also have to make sure your gamepad is correctly set up in windows.
That said, you’d be much better off learning to aim with a mouse. A gamepad or joystick type device simply can’t give you the speed and accuracy.
I’m becoming increasingly resigned to the fact that a gamepad does not work with ET. Oh well, I guess it’s back to the practice range for me.
It works fine man.
Basically, make sure you have it setup properly within your OS… XP im guessing… and make sure you have latest drivers/ware for the pad.
Then in console, in_joystick 1 and setup the controls… tried and tested with me USB pad on Q3, ET and CoD just for a laugh… impossible…
If you’re using XP, it is known to have problems with some USB devices. Microsoft released a patch to fix it. You also need Service Pack 1 before you can apply that patch. When you plug the pad in, does the OS give you any errors?
That said, it only takes a while to get used to keyboard/mouse play, and it’s far better suited to FPS games.
Its all down to personal preference. He says himself;

I play FPS much better with keyboard/mouse but unlike as expected I prefer football and sport games on keyboard rather than a pad. Tony Hawks thos a whole different story… :>
I would argue that a gamepad/joystick type device has fundamental problems with the kind of aiming an FPS requires. It is really hard to match the kind of non-linearity you can get out of a mouse.
