I don’t run my own server. Is there any benefit to downloading patches beyond 1.02? I have noticed a sudden reduction in available servers. Is this because they are being filtered out as servers upgrade to later patches?

There are no patches beyond 1.02. You will either see servers running 1.01 or 1.02. If there is a drop in the number of servers running ET, it’s due to the time that the game has been out and a normal levelling off of the number of players and therefore the number of servers.

1474 servers running 1.02 worldwide
141 servers running 1.01 worldwide
You sure you have 1.02 installed as 1474 servers doesnt seem a lack of servers to me 
Compared to 923 RTCW servers, which is a much better game in my eyes
