Updates from PAX

(H0RSE) #1

Ok, so I talked with the guy who got to play Brink at PAX, and here are some things I found out:

[ul]
[li]- overall, he was really impressed.
[/li][li]- The game feels really polished. For anyone familiar with Splash Damage games, he said he feels like what Quake Wars should’ve been.
[/li][li]- SMART really works. He is a PC gamer and not really good with controllers, so he only used the SMART button to do maneuvers and he said it works really well. It doesn’t feel cumbersome, it doesn’t get in the way or feel annoying and in every case where we wanted it to work, it worked just how he wanted it to - no misfires.
[/li][li]- The weapons felt really satisfying.
[/li][li]- hip-firing is extremely effective - he said up to around mid range, and you don’t have to burst fire to make it effective. He said we was owning guys by running in rooms and just spraying them with an SMG. He said hip-firing felt like what you would expect from an SD game. This is good news to me.
[/li][li]- Walking with the Medium body type is a bit slow, but sprinting was pretty quick. He said the sprint speed was comparable to the sprint speed in W:ET. He said that the Light body types must be ******* flying around the map.
[/li][li]- There is no limbo menu - no menu to change class. Command Posts replace it, meaning command posts are the only place you can change class. This adds even more importance to capturing them.
[/li][li]- Said the customization was ******* amazing.
[/li][li]- As far as damage goes, he said grenades did ****. They were more used as a tool for for crowd control, knocking players down, and dealing some damage on the side.
[/li][li]- The main thing he was impressed with was that nothing annoyed him about the game. He said he plays COD a lot, and although he enjoys it, it can annoy the **** out him - this was not the case with Brink. He said in the game he played, his team was getting owned, and he still wasn’t getting annoyed.
[/li]

Some bad things:
[li]- said he witnessed some lag spikes - and they were only playing over LAN. The system they played on was PS3, so this could either be a netcode problem or a problem with PSN.
[/li][li]- when I mentioned above that his team was getting owned, he said they were getting practically getting spawn camped. When I asked him if there was any anti-spawnkill mechanisms, like turrets or whatnot, he said he doesn’t remember seeing anything like that.
[/li][/ul]

Well, I’m sure that there are still some things that they’re going to tweak. Still, it sounds pretty good.

Thanks a lot for the heads up!

(Herandar) #4

Hoping lag spikes are a PS3 exclusive. Sorry PS3 owners.

First impressions from PAX!

Thanks, HORSE, and tell your friend thank you, too.

Understood about the good and the bad. I think it was Kotaku that wrote about framerate issues for the PS3. This sounds similar. Anyway, hopefully (though unfortunate) it is limited to that system as I will be using the 360 version. I am not worried about the spawn killing because it will never be an issue for me and my crew. LMAO

The good all sounds very good.

Don’t tell me they removed the anti-spawn-camping indestructo-turrets!? Not too worried about the lag spike thing though. I might start getting worried if I keep hearing about it though…

Everything else is music to my ears. Let’s see some footage, pretty please~

(Weapuh) #7

Thanks for the info HORSE, that lifted my spirits big-time.

(Schwarzeis) #8

Thanks, HORSE

Questions:

  1. Can you see your legs while sliding? (he might have told you something about this, who knows)
  2. Are there any YouTube videos from PAX EAST?

Well to follow up with what H0rse said we were at the brink event and I put up some pictures in our PAX album.

The line was super long but thankfully our folks had VIP access.
We got to play for 20 minutes but at least in the press area we weren’t allowed to film anything.

Our Gamers were

Maddog - ET player
Bambi - Team Fortress
Simon - Call of Duty
MightyDog -Console Gamer (halo, Killzone)

They has the PS3 versions. As they have told us they know how to make PC games so most of the testing and feedback is focused on console.

Horse pretty much summed up the gaming points. They all really liked the game so those $40 D2D preorders will prob be real popular after the event.

We have more game time and some interviews with SD today so we will have more updates and blogs that H0rse will put here and on our site after PAX. Overall everyone has been impressed with Brink and the polish so far.

i think its an answer for SockDog

Man I can’t stand PS3 versions that are always the worst out of the 3. I really hope this is was an isolated issue, and won’t be as the PS3 version will be on launch. Getting tired of this now.

(Wraith) #12

Thanks for the info.

(DouglasDanger) #13

I hope the ps3 version is good. Slowdowns could be catastrophic in a game as fast paced as this.

(DarkangelUK) #14

If you manage to track down a Bethesda PR dude, can you ask them the reason why they don’t want word of mouth (or should that be eye) spreading for Brink and why there’s STILL a ban on recording this close to release?

You guys really need to do something about your fixed width web pages, not everyone’s screen resolution matches what you’re using on your website.

We had our interview today. We ask a couple “community” type questions.

Unfortunately sometimes 3rd party PR firms take control of the marketing process and only go for mainstream sites your “IGN’s , Gamespots, Game Informers” where they also happen to spend a lot of advertising money. I am not saying that is what is happening here but running a game site and being in the industry for a while I see it happen all the time. Many of the guys for those sites write a review off a day’s worth of playing, if that because all they do is write reviews. They have less control over what gamer driven blogs and sites say so sites like us get less access. We also have less resources and most of us don’t have huge audiences so we don’t get much attention.

That said I will say that they gave us the same access that the “press” sites had and PAX is a gamer’s conference so they were very willing to chat with us as fellow gamers. I would even say because they knew we were gamers they went out of their way to chat. I would have liked to see Richard Ham and more devs and producers there but hey they were at GDC the week before all the way at the west coast so I understand. I know their marketing and PR folks were very busy with GDC and PAX being right after each other and with Skyrim , Rage and Hunted coming out. They have recently brought more resources on board so hopefully we will see more “fan site” and gamer type access.

Now our video interview will be up tonight and hopefully we will be able to do a podcast interview with actual devs or producers closer to release when they are ready to reveal more. As I have said the feedback from most of the gamers was positive and as people have stated they feel the PS3 version is the worst that may be why they have chosen that. If the worst looks pretty damm good than that bodes well for the other versions.

this scares the poop out of me… does anyone know why in gods name they would make such a amazing game but not give ded servers to everyone? it doesnt make sense to me. could someone tell me why!!!

(DarkangelUK) #18

You say that like dedicated servers are common place on consoles, which they aren’t at all.

(LastGun) #19

i just hope they dont take a massive dump on the ps3 online, because ive been waiting on this game for to long for that to happen. But knowing SD they will probably have it fixed by release.

(Crytiqal) #20

so it is still played with controllers?

WHEN can we see some keyboard + mouse feedback?
