Updates from PAX

(DarkangelUK) #21

Apparently it’s on PS3 as well, not PC+controller.

(MatthiasK75) #22

wow, ive never really regretted being a ps3 gamer until now :frowning: kind of making me mad to hear that the ps3 is the crappiest one

(SockDog) #23

I’ll temper my reply until I see the PC version but I do hope they don’t have the cheek to roll out excuses if the PC version is buggy or incomplete.

(ShoryukenII) #24

I sort of feel the same way. But at least they are trying with the PS3 exclusive beta. I think they should do a stress test for PS3 (not just because I want to play!). But my expectations have been lowered.:frowning: Oh well! If this ends up sucking for PS3, we still have a lot of exclusives this year!

(Mustang) #25

No, your own player model is not rendered when in first person view
This was confirmed by I think the Ham’ster a fair while back

And this is all PS3 gamers care about
so it is still played with controllers?

WHEN can we see some keyboard + mouse feedback?
After they get those controls finished

(triggerpappy) #27

Soon  we have been been busy preparing for PAX and begging for interviews.
Other stuff will be upgraded too but your right the resolution thing is a pain if you have under 1920.

(Crytiqal) #28

I thought they already “nailed” the controllers about 6 months ago…

I played two rounds yesterday on the floor of PAX yesterday and I will post some impressions today or tomorrow when I have time but I just wanted to hit a couple points relevant to this thread and some of the freakouts people are having.

First, the lag in the PS3 version is being far overblown in this thread. I didn’t see any lag issues at all in either of my playthroughs and noone I talked to about Brink over the course of the day (and I talked to a ton of people about it) had a single complaint about lag.

Second, I don’t know how people were getting spawn camped in the level we played. You spawn nowhere near where most of the action is going on and the map was big enough that I planted the first bomb before the first shot was fired in our second play round later in the day. At one point during the escort mission I spawned as a medic and was 160m from my revive target (the person we were escorting) once we lost our command post. The teams weren’t spawning even remotely near each other.

Third, they aren’t going to show kb/m at a giant show like that. It is far easier to manage 16 PS3s than keep 16 gaming PCs somewhere and stable. There is also limited room to set up hardware in a show booth. Besides that, it is also far easier for gaming newcomers to pick up a controller and figure it out than learn all the new aspects of a game and figure out WASD + mouse if they have never used it.

At one point the line wrapped around the entire (very large) booth in the morning. With 16 stations set up and about 20 minutes or more of gameplay per round the people at the end of the line would have been waiting about 6 hours to play. I am pretty sure they just told people it would take too long at that point and pared the line down. The game probably had a 1-2 hour line all day, minimum.

Thx Maawdawg.

Any new info about the PC version ?

(Maawdawg) #31

Nothing specific or new for the PC platform as far as big news (or for any platform for that matter), I kind of understand why though after seeing that booth all day. Trying to keep people organized, coached up, playing, and then the line moving was a giant task. Doing that while also trying to find the time to explain freshly released info would be way too much to try handle. The PAX floor was a zoo.

(SockDog) #32

If only there was a means to disseminate that kind of information outside of the core PR events like shows and blog features/previews. You know like a forum or during people’s Q&As.

(engiebenjy) #33

:frowning:

They have or did have a beta running on the ps3, I would hope that anything as big as lag spikes would have been discovered and fixed since then. Either way - its unlikely the pax version of the code is brand new - afaik they are normally a few months old or longer.

(tokamak) #34

Weak grenades is good news to me. They ought to be more of a psychological tool than a lethal weapon.

(triggerpappy) #35

We had our interview yesterday unfortunately even with a private room there was a ton of background noise.
We will have it up after we clean the audio or just post the transcript. There are a couple tidbits in there. As we had heard before they keep reassuring us that the pc version will be fine as that is their expertise and what they themselves primarily play.

I’m guessing this might have been a misinterpretation on the writer’s behalf:

My physical type allowed me to be one of three classes: the operative, the engineer and the soldier

Switching to a light character, I could also be a medic.

(Maawdawg) #37

Yeah, any body size can definitely be any class. I can confirm that from playing yesterday. He may have been going by the quest wheel which won’t tell you to become a medic if there are lots of them. You can still do it at the control point but the wheel won’t tell you to. It is definitely user confusion as even with 5 medics on my team I could have switched to medic when I was playing operative towards the end. There is a lot to try to take in, especially if you aren’t familiar with the layout so I can’t blame him for the confusion though, he should have checked his info though. Even knowing as much as I did about the game and UI I found it to have a good amount to try to absorb.

(Wraith) #38

Did you find the operative useful. Some recent reviews think their useless.

(Maawdawg) #39

I posted some quick thoughts on the Operative in a reply over here. I am going to try to do a more condensed “play journal” thread of my own at some point tomorrow so it isn’t all over the place.
