Upcoming Hardware Upgrade What is currently the most important Factor for Extraction?

(k0k0nat) #1

Has any one checked, what the actual usage of CPU/ GPU / RAM is?

I am planning an upgrade soon ( really cant stand my FPS on trainyard anymore :stuck_out_tongue: ) and I currently have questions like:

How many cores can Extraction use?
How much RAM is actually used by Extraction?
How much VRAM does Extraction currently need/use?

Are there big differences in performance between AMD/Intel (CPU) and AMD/Nvidia (GPU) ?

My current system is:

Athlon X3 450
Radeon 6850
8GB RAM

I know that I could all do this by myself and no excuses for being lazy, but I currently have enough to do with my final exams / BA and if any of u guys have already checked things like this, I really would appreciate your help

I just bough myself a new pc, and I get between 100+ and 300 FPS full quality in XT :

Intel I5 4660k
Nvidia GeForce 760GTX Phantom
16Go DDR3 @1600 of Ram

XT like many games will use as much as it can from your processor and graphic card, all you need is a balanced system.

EDIT : 8 GO of Ram would be enough, also ATI is not really well supported at the moment in XT, I would advise against it

Depends on the settings you play with. If you put everything on high your GPU will be the bottleneck.
And remember that this is still an alpha. Most maps are not optimized. For example I get on some parts of maps gpu useage of 20% and cpu usage of 40% (at release this could be totally different).

Low settings don’t use full resources of cpu and gpu

With everything on high your gpu will be a botleneck. Usage is 98%

I would say that the game depends on the gpu.

I will play on simple. simple settings - low texture config and 1280x resolution.

Thanks guys.

Can somebody also validate that Nvidia Cards/ Drivers have more performance at this time? How many VRAM does your GFX Card have Rayzer?

Can Extraction use more than 4 CPU-Cores?

(Ruben0s) #5

VRAM is not an important factor for a game like Xt. As you can see I don’t reach higher than 1 GB. Most cards nowadays have this already.
In games like BF4 I reach about 2.3 GB.

At your resolution anything above 1GB would be silly, but if you plan to upgrade -> 2/3 gb should be more than enough.

I have 2GO Vram with the GeForce 760, and I doubt that more than 4 cores are used, the synchronization between cores in a pain in the ass if you know what I mean …

Ok, last thing I need to know is if there are really such big performances issues between Nvidia / AMD

I am really looking myself into the AMD 7970 Ghz , but this doesnt help a lot if there exist performance issue with AMD Drivers

No there is not a big difference. Also can’t really judge on that on this moment since it’s still an alpha release. Everything has to be optimized. I both have Nvidia and Amd, game runs smooth on both machines.

AMD 7970 Ghz would be overkill for your resolution though.

If you want best bang for buck you should go for AMD 7950 or 7970.

If you value cuda, go for gtx 760 2gb version ( 4gb wouldn’t make sense)

Anyway I used to have a HD6850 and I got around 120 fps at 1920x1080. I don’t even see the point of upgrading for this game, unless you want 300+ fps, which doesn’t make sense. All the fps above your monitor refresh rate is useless in unreal games. I would first upgrade your processor and check/test it with the hd6850. If you don’t like the results you can always upgrade your gpu.

Yes thanks ruben, but I will not only play xT =)

This is currently the only game I play on this settings.

The problem is, that I cant really ā€œjustā€ upgrade my CPU.
It would be a waste to upgrade for an AM2 motherboard

(Ruben0s) #10

It would be a waste… but your cpu is the main problem here. Putting a Nvidia 760 or AMD 7950 wouldn’t change much.

(RasteRayzeR) #11

And changing only the CPU would be a waste too, because the CG would become the bottleneck. The key is balance, that’s why you should update both CPU and CG.

(Ruben0s) #12

I agree, but he could always add a gpu.

(RasteRayzeR) #13

Add a GPU ? Like having 2 CG ? I tried it, it’s a waste of money and energy. The performance boost is rather bad, even more on unoptimized games

(Ruben0s) #14

No I meant it in like replace.

(RasteRayzeR) #15

Ah, not sure this will help a lot, the CPU might already be a bottleneck …

It would be wise to update the CPU, GPU, Motherboard and Ram at the same time.

Im glad someone brought this up because im actually experiencing some FPS problems with my specs apparently.

Those are my specs:

  • AMD HD 7850 MSI GDDR5 2GB OC Power Edition
  • I7 2600
  • 8GB Ram
  • 1980 x ? (Forgot it, im on mobile atm…)
  • Kingston SSD 120GB (DB is located on this disk)

I used to play everything on high performance but then my fps jumps from 60 to 20-30…

When I face towards the edge of the map I get a stable 60 but when im running around it jumps up and down… Seen my GPU I think it should definitely be able to run XT on high settings. . What I’m doing wrong, it freaks me out :frowning:

PS how to set maxfps? I think it’s set on 60 @ me now.

(Mustang) #17

I would suggest to buy the best you can afford.

What’s the budget?

(k0k0nat) #18

Sure I would upgrade the whole system, not only the GFX. I was just wondering what extraction curently uses. Even tho the big AMD/ATI vs. nvidia question.

Cough Brink Cough ^^

(Protekt1) #19

If you want some future proof to your rig you’ll probably want 2gb of VRAM minimum, I’d recommend 3gb of VRAM though.

I believe UE3 is pretty CPU dependent but any decent CPUs you buy today are probably going to be fine.

RAM 8gb ddr3 but you may end up increasing this in the future, should be the cheapest upgrade… ddr4 is supposed to be on the horizon as well

lolwut? you have other issues if you arent getting 100+ with everything maxed with a pc of those specs…
