Unlocking/leveling and competitive BRINK

(Schwarzeis) #41

Perfect, we have proven that you can compare the two fruits!

(Diablo85) #42

The crowd that plays those two games are entirely different though. And besides, many Pokemon players use saved game editors to skip all the grinding to get their pokemons competition ready.

Another example is the game Guild Wars. PvP players hated the fact that they had to grind unlocks in PvE first before they could jump into what they really wanted to play. This caused alot of whining and bitching on the forums. Many players left the game because of it. Now the developers Arenanet have totally seperated PvE and PvP in GW 2 so that doesn’t happen again.

I predict the same whining and bitching will happen here if competitive players won’t be able to jump into what they enjoy right away.

Humate already has given the perfect solution to this problem. Not hard to implent at all and doesn’t affect people who like to grow their characters.

Splash Damage should just be upfront about how the game is going to be so that competitive players won’t waste their money on a game that won’t be competition ready out of the box.

(PariahDog) #43

Humate’s idea is marvelously simple but I don’t think it will work with the intention since it means during “warm up” everyone needs to spend their points and build their guns. I think they want a “jump right in” for the game. Otherwise I’d be all for running pub servers in this comp mode to level the playing field as much as possible (everyone has access to everything right then and there)

(Weeohhweeohh) #44

I’m not understanding how, instead of investing some time in a game they want to comp and getting use to the mechanics, they automatically just jump right into comps. I have never played this game, but dammit, I want to play some comps NOW!

In my opinion, I would rather have teammates that know the game before we compete. A handful of hours front loaded is better then OJT when we are competing.

Edit: Maybe I just missed something.

Qua???!?!?

Im sure they do invest some time in the game before playing matches to learn the maps and the mechanics. However, I think (this is speculation) that the time it will take to unlock every weapon, skill and attachments so they will be on a leveled playing field will be way longer than the competitive player is willing to invest before being able to play matches.

(Weeohhweeohh) #47

I would think that would be a prerequisite to show your commitment…though that’s just my feeling about it.

(Diablo85) #48

I can see your point but that is not how the average competitive player works. They want to do what they like best, playing matches with their friends or clanbuddies and compete with other teams. Not grind their character out so they can finally play in 20+ hours. That fits more with the RPG crowd then the FPS crowd.

(Weeohhweeohh) #49

Interesting. I see what you are saying. Though I’m a little confused with the “average competitive player”, but then again I come from a different background.

(PariahDog) #50

This. I’m not out to grind out my rep with container city to buy that epic drum mag. I’m gonna learn the maps, learn the strats for the maps and go fraggin. That seems to be the source of all the bitching in the various threads is how closely this is blurring the line with a massively mulitplayer grindfest. Options like that work in games like there where they are about the hours/days/weeks invested in a character. Shooters are a much more fluid game. Especially class based/loadout based shooters. Adapting, switching around set for offense/defense as the situation calls for it.

(BMXer) #51

Most likely, competitive Brink will be played with the stock guns, attachments and abilities. Basically whatever you get when you first installed the game is what will be available to players in “comp mode”. Just like most other competitive games, “comp mode” just basically sets everyone to level 1. Simple as that.

Some people wont like that. Just like in ETQW, COD, Wolf, etc., people are gonna want to use the spammy/skillless crap like their grenade launchers and stuff in comp. I can’t speak for Brink yet, but almost every other game only gets you more spammy/skillless weapons when you level up. And spammy/skillless weapons have no place in competitive gaming.

(Weeohhweeohh) #52

I think I was on the track of casual competitive player. Sorry disregard me =D

You are missing something. For comp, you should be able to build a character to make any strat you come up with doable. You shouldn’t have to grind at the game to be able to do this. It’s stupid to require someone play the game for 400 hours just so they can compete on an even playing field. Comp is about how good you play and coordinate as a team, not about who has played the longest.

If an ability is unlocked in comp, it should automatically be unlocked for everyone regardless of your level. If it’s locked, obviously it’s locked for everyone.

And making this work is easy, you do it with server variables which enable/disable various abilities (or groups of abilities) and many other things (see Exedor’s powerpoint for ideas).

This screenshot is a list of the server variables you could set which were part of SD’s official comp mod in ETQW (the promod variables are on a different tab). It should give you an idea on how it’s done in other games.

preface: im drunk so this may come out wrong

it came out wrong so i vetoed it.

(Apples) #55

This is just plain stoopid if the competition settings are not “set in stone”, in comp you want everyone to be equal at start, same weapons / abilities etc etc for everyone, if a player played more and has more abilities / weapons than the other, it just breaks everything.

Quit whining about comp player not wanting to play the game in the first place, they will do to learn the map at first and stuff, but remember that most comp player are here for the FPS part, not the barbie part. Plus many casual are happy with the comp crowd out of their pub servers, as usually 2-3 stacked comp player imbalance completely the game and make it a nightmare for noobiez.

Meh

(Weapuh) #56

I’m looking forward to the comp scene however i find using the stock guns, attachments and perks is a really lazy league imo. Best to get feedback from the community regarding what is and is not fair. I agree with BMXer that it’s a no-brainer that there is no place for spammy weapons but those are usually the “stock” weapons anyhow so It’s pretty lazy to say “Everyone is lvl 1, that’s final!”

Splash damage continually prides themselves on this competitive grade balance in their games and hopefully the perks added for mass appeal will not be overpowered in competition but rather useless in practice instead.

Oh and bananas don’t grow on trees… for whoever said that lol

(Apples) #57

Bananas grow on herbs actually

(JeP) #58

Weapuh : for your info :

Now I don’t see why comp players are still whining. Of course Brink basic settings won’t be made towards you,
most player just don’t care about that they want to have fun, SD is trying to appeal to a new crowd, etc.

But like most FPS, a promod will eventually release, with every perk/weapon/attachment they find balanced enough unlocked,
and every body will be happy.

(Weapuh) #59

For your info that is a herbaceous plant and not a tree as seen in this picture, thanks  and a banana is also a berry too if you didn’t already know

Either way I just see people being vocal about comp because everyone is just antsy to play it.

(JeP) #60

Well, I’ve learned something then, thanks ^^
