Tweaking : Case of the missing RAM

(RM) #1

I’ve been trying to tweak my ET to get better FPS
(Averages arnd 15 now)
AMD 500mhz (yea i know)
AGP 1x mobo
G4Ti4600 128mb
458MB RAM

I tried cvar tweaking but that doesnt gimme much of a difference, looks like the CPU and AGP are the bottleneck. I was also trying to increase my hunkMegs but even though i got 458MB ram, when i set humkMegs to just 128, system memory is completely used up.

TaskManager notes that ET takes 212MB ram. Before loading ET, system memory was at 80MB. So where did the rest of the RAM go? Thanks for the help

You won’t get better framerates until you get a new CPU. ET is very processor intensive, it tends to use up the CPU before it uses up hardware graphics (your card isn’t bad)…

you won’t see an improvement until you get a new processor.

Yeah your video card is way too good for your cpu/mobo

Want to switch with my gf3? :drink:

The 1x AGP isnt a bottleneck btw, you wont get more then 5% higher fps when u have agp 8x, i read somewhere… Yep, its the cpu :frowning:

(RM) #5

hhaha true, splurged on it when it came out, spent a fortune on gfx when i could have just upgraded the whole rig to a decent config :disgust:

but what abt the issue of the missing ram? i want to increase my hunkMegs even further but it already seems to use up all my ram. :???:

(mouse) #6

have u got a virusscanner or firewall that is monitoring on the background?

(RM) #7

i disable the virus scanner b4 i start.
Before launching ET : 80MB
After launching ET : 440MB
ET.exe 200MB

cant explain the missing ram, does the TaskManager screenshot in my first post tell anything? :???:

Part will be what OS you are using. Win95 takes 24mb to run, Win98 around 32mb, Win XP, more like 128mb. That’s with nothing running. If your virtual page swap is too large, it can eat up memory. Pressing Alt+ctrl+del once will usually show MOST of what is running. Win XP can show all. In Win98,XP system information can give better info.

Some of the memory requirements of ET are counted toward the OS (I suspect textures would be the largest part).
shrug

As everyone else said, the only thing that is going to help your FPS at this point is a faster CPU.

I suggest getting an Athlon XP 1800+ or 2100+ with B core and an AGP 4x/8x motherboard

(RM) #11

thanks guys, ya think ill upgrade

(RM) #12

ah heres a happy ending
upgraded to 2600+ 4x mobo

what used to be 15fps now hits 400 (yes, two zeroes) sometimes   cant believe i dint upgrade earlier! my accuracy has also gone up by at least 5-10% now that theres no need to spray. anyone sitting on the fence, id suggest make the plunge and upgrade, the results are well worth it!.
