As pointed out in her staff interview a while back, our Senior Concept Artist Laurel ‘Tully’ Austin regularly sculpts all manner of dinosaur/demon/monster-related creatures in her spare time, much to the delight of everyone here at the office. We’ve previously shown some of her work on our Flickr page and she’s been pretty busy since.
Luckily, Laurel’s more recent creations are now out in the virtual wild over at art showcase site Creature Spot, featuring a multitude of photos full of spikes, horns, and claws. Perfect for a rainy Monday afternoon, we think.

Wonderful stuff! My favorite is the T-Rex simply because I “know” what it should look like, and so I can see the skill in having captured that perfectly. Incredible talent!

Everything I make, as Bill Cosby used to say, “turns into an ashtray”. Just put two dents in the edges, toss it in the kiln, and give it to Mom when it comes out.

Joe999: Yep, that was me. I’ve been meaning to make the bandana-wearing tapir like that one, but been putting it off mostly because of his gun. An AK-47 is way harder than most other weapons :stuck_out_tongue:

chr1s: I dunno, these things take on average a couple months of after work work to finish… I sit in front of them for hours and hours and hours. I don’t usually take other peoples’ suggestions unless it’s something I really feel like making :slight_smile:

3Suns: No, T-rex, it is an allosaurus! But thankee :smiley:

Tokamak: No, I’m afraid I’m not… I don’t think my sculptures are mini enough to qualify over there. They seem to be more for warhammer sorta scale, and mine are a lot larger than that.

Creating awesome demonian sculptures, prehistorical creatures and more out of this world creations are “easier” than an AK-47 ? :smiley:

Why not change the AK-47 into an other weapon or so :slight_smile:

if artist takes his job serious, he treated his creations/actions seriously too. serious things/art come w/pain.
such advices more applicable to mass-production designers, rather than art-creators.

p.s.
im lack aestetical eductaion, but works seems well-made for my outsider eyes.
hope Tully enjoy this[work and result] too.

shagileo: it’s less about its AK47-ness than about it’s assault-rifleness. Small, fiddly hard surface things are quite difficult to deal with, especially as sculpey gets quite brittle when it’s thin, so you have to use different materials, which have their own issues associated with them. Not impossible by any means, but not something I’ve done a lot!

eh?
I’m just saying that for every problem there’s a solution.
Personally I don’t think the sculpture would be a fail when the artist changes the weapon from an AK-47 to something familiar that can be made. :confused:
