trying to beat the 10 map campaign limit....

(=TAC=Chron) #1

in an earlier post, i asked why a 20 map campaign crashed ET. the response was 10 maps are max for a campaign. so i’ll go with that. :frowning:

so still wondering about trying to get over 10 maps in the rotation this question has 2 parts:

  1. what is the number of maps that will give enought xp and such to get a character to level 4(at least decent advancement),

and

  1. if i divided up custom campaigns like the original europe and africa campaigns (with a number of maps refering to the 1st part) and ran about 4 rotations in the campaigncycle.cfg,

would that beat the 10 map limit? or would it create other errors?

btw, what is a good spawn time tweak between axis and allies or should both be set to same time. or just ignore it and run with defaults.

So my question is why do you want to run a campaign > 10 maps. I’ll admit up front that I am totally biased against campaign servers - can’t stand starting a map with a bunch of fully levelled up players. Based on some of your other questions, are you looking for a longer campaign so that people have a chance to play at L4? If the goal is to just have a bunch of L4’s running around blasting each other, then run the ET_Tourneymod by Shrub. You can start every one off at whatever level you want and save yourself the headache of having to work your way thru the campaign

This is totally depending on which map and what class you use, I can get to level 4 as medic on the first map if it’s a map that the team can hold for the entire round, on the other hand I may be stomping at level 1 as engineer after the 4th or 5th map on some matches, if I get killed without being able to do any good (which happens all too frequently… ) and the maps change fast due to either good teamwork or unbalanced teams.

Personally I don’t like longer campaigns that 8 maps since that already usually takes 2-4 hours to complete, but that’s just my opinion
Anyway, if someone has a good setup for alternating campaigns I’d be happy to see it, since I have so far still not been able to get my server to switch campaigns it just repeats the one same campaign over again when it’s finished and doesn’t bother with switching to the next :moo:

Depends on player skill, sometimes what weapon they use, how fast the map goes, and if they xp whore.

An average player, with a regular gun (MP-42/ Thompson), with maps that last the full time, who DONT xp whore.

Probably can max out one class per 3 maps, maaaaaaybe 2. (But thats usually pushing it, and if so, will happen in the last 5-10 minutes.)

On shrub’s server I’ve played games that have lasted longer than 10 maps. That’s due to an exploit of a bug in the XP saving code, though. If an admin does a XP shuffle during intermission after the last map of the campaign, XP will be saved for the beginning of the next campaign. You may be able put the shuffle command in the server config and have extended campaigns automatically. Or shrub may add support for extended campaigns without having to use an exploit.

let me give a few more parameters to what i am seeing for a server setup

18 players - 4 private and 14 public

standard et - no mods

a lightly tweaked config.

on to the xp carryover and such, xp and levels reset with a switching campaign, don’t they?

with multiple 3 or 4 map campaigns, that would prevent anyone from really having to play so 6-7+ hours, with a 4 map subcampaign, you could come in play 2 hours and then go. plus i was thinking about setting the map timelimit to 20 minutes.
you wouldn’t have to mess around long if you came in late to a match and were level disadvantaged.

i would like to see a server that has a large map rotation, but i agree that i would not want to come in at map 12 of 20 and get smashed because of my level disadvantage. smaller map subgroups would limit xp whoring i would think.

What you are talking about, I believe, is the ability to retain XP for as long as you stay on the server regardless of how many maps are run. You still cannot run a ‘campaign’ that is more than 10 maps. I have a server running called Unlimited Abuse where XP is retained as long as you are on the server. If you were sick and had no life (apparently some that play on this server fall into that category :-)) than you could play 30-40 maps in a row and keep XP. The campaign that runs is still a 10 map campaign.

it seems to me that gaining XP has taken a priority over the map objectives. if a team accoplishes the map objectives then the XP will follow.

call me naive, but i don’t worry about my XP in a game, i just try to help my side win the map. that is why i want to have an XP reset points in a large map server. i see competitive maps and minimized XP whoring and level differentials.

I believe more than 6 maps in a campaign are no good. To many players are running around with level 4 skills, which can mess up the objectives (e.g. you can build the bridge on Fueldump with 2 or 3 level 4 engis (and get the tank over it) very fast). And you can become 3-star genaral within 6 maps easily (when this is your target), when you have a good team and an equal enemy team, so that all maps are going over (nearly) the full time limit. Playing more than 6 maps leads only to XP-whoring to get the General rank.
In my opinion the best size for a campaign is 3 maps. Good players will make it to Major, maybe Colonel. And most players will reach at least Lieutenant. And the players will focus on developing their primary skill, which usually helps completing the objectives (Medics heal, Engis build, Cov Ops spot, etc.).

But it’s fun to run around with lvl4 experience and dual lugers (especially the lugers… )

Oh, almost forgot, the panzer reload time of approx. zero seconds or so is fun too, the team/players on the receiving end usually thinks so too… :stuck_out_tongue:

so running a rotation of 4 or 5 3-map campaigns through the camaigncycle.cfg would accomplish what i am wanting to do then.

i would like to run the fluhafen but it is a 20mb download for someone that ain’t got it so i don’t think i’ll use it.

  1. oasis, battery, goldrush
  2. radar,railgun, fuel dump
  3. river, rhine, carnage canyon
  4. dday, normandy, atlantic wall
  5. desertfortress, ds_bunkers, apenines
  6. flakcannon,mml_church, flughafen

each one being a campaign, and rotated through the campaigncycle.cfg

i was going to ask for opinions, but i realized i’ll get them either way…

(Wraith2k3) #13

Run flughafen if you can, its a great map

(BlackDeath) #14

What are you talking about???..The colts rule

(Fenris) #15

Ok, I’ll support that too

My only regret with the Lugers is that I have still not found if it’s possible to “un-silence” them when playing as covops, I mean with one Luger it’s just using alt-fire to remove silencer, but it doesn’t seem to work when you have two. And the small silenced plopps doesn’t really compare to the machinegun smatter you can get off with a real fast akimbo fire
(Draws ammo like crazy tho…, I’ll empty 2 mags in one “duel”)
