"Trick Jumps" in Wolf:ET

Is making TJ on maps (wall jump on Siwa Oasis; roof jump on Fuel Dump, etc.) wanted feature or is jumping TJ only “goodluck” that we are able to jump TJ? :???:

I don’t think the trick jumps, like Oasis wall jump, were set out for this exploit it just was coincidence. I may be wrong.

i’m kind of sure that the trickjumps aren’t “wanted features” because

1. the game wasn’t final / balanced
2. fps increased with better pc’s --> more jumps
3. my own opinion :>

1. Wrong, what makes you say that?
2. Wrong better PC does not equal more jumps. A glitch in the Quake engine means that PC’s running at certain FPS, eg 76 or 333, not higher FPS can jump further.
3. Wro…Oh wait that is a subjective comment of which I agree that tj’s weren’t planned.

The maps in question weren’t concepted from the outset to have trickjumps, but as we were making them it became apparent they had the potential for tasty trickjumps so we polished them up and playtested them a lot and ended up keeping them in.

So, strictly speaking, they weren’t intended in the very first place right from the very outset. I certainly cannot for the life of me recall or define the precise moment when they went from happy accident to known game feature to intentional map design. Certainly by the time ET was released, they were old friends and we were looking forward to introducing them to strangers. So while they were left in, they weren’t simply left in, if you know what I mean…

Stating something is ‘intentional’ is a little misleading in this context - there are things we design in on purpose, and things we find out are possible during development but leave in for various reasons. The stack plant at the Oasis guns is one of the latter.

ET was an interesting game to balance - opinion is fairly divided on whether trick jumps are a good thing in a WW2 game, whoever you ask. Most of SD have a background in fast-paced FPS games like Quake and Team Fortress, so we’re definitely aware of the potential for stuff like that, but I can’t think of any instances where we actively designed them into ET. To balance this, we didn’t actively remove any we knew about either. We also knew that players would find more than we knew about, over time (it always happens).

The engine has nothing to do with jumping. If it were an exploit, it would be a game code exploit.

I find that trick jumping, althought it may not be suited for a WW2 game, adds something to the game. For instance: Your team has broken the grate on Fuel Dump. One engineer that knows how to jump the fuel dump wall manages to get through to the fuel dump and plant. Now, where this may not win the game for you, it atleast distracts the enemy so you can push in from the front a little faster.

In reality, actually getting away with these jumps is nearly impossible. Specially ones like the Oasis wall jump, Goldrush Barried jump (<3 Darkangle) and some of the Radar jumps. The chances are you’re going to get shot in the face by an angry Nazi/Ally.
