@ SickBoy - try Pappa Dee’s Tram Server and see if you still think it’s possible for Allies to win :wink:

Tram is a funny map in that once you’ve got the tram flag and Allies can spawn at the tram hut, the first two things to attempt are blowing the door and then the castle door which means trying to sneak right to the other end of the map without getting spotted or killed. (If you go straight ahead and blow the door to the docs, the Axis spawn at the castle making the task of delivering the docs to the Castle transmitter room that bit harder…)

Axis would be able to mine the bottom door of the tram complex which is hidden from view to the Allies as they approach - that’s quite a choke point also which is usually defended by Axis lt’s and meds - now add Axis mines to that and it’s getting pretty hard for Allies - add to that the possibility of mining the crap out of the second part of the map before it is even accessable by Allies makes it even harder to get the docs to the castle.

An Axis team that knows the map should have few problems defending - that’s just in normal RtCW so can you imagine what it’d be like when there’s the opportunity to mine the very clear and obvious choker points in the map along with random rifle-grenade style deaths?

I have no comment about Marko - as far as I’m concerned you should be giving him positive (if critical) feedback on his website / forum - that’s how maps get better don’t 'cha know.

I can imagine Pappa Dee’s Tram Server to be a 64 player server or something like that, with those kind of number allies can never win on any map, unless maybe railgun :wink:
6vs6 or 8vs8 it’s balanced enough to have a fun game on it.
The tram for ET doesn’t have to be an exact copy afaic, with an area around the door where you can’t plant for example. And some added ET-style objectives :slight_smile:

Fair enough Sick Boy but Pappa Dee’s isn’t a 64 player server - far from it. It’s actually a server that was started by fans of the original Bygame Tram server before Bygames did a runner in the game server market last year - I think they call themselves ‘The Mystery Clan’ - have ET servers too. You’d see (and probably still do see) peeps from good UK clans, typcially a hang out for UKEG in fact.

I’m basing much of my opinion on the mp_beach conversion fwiw - the map itself is a pretty accurate copy of the RtCW original but it doesn’t play anything like it. I put that down to weapon differences, mines and ROF tbh.

BTW - isn’t it about time ppl stopped sneering? I’ve had my fair share of fun on this forum but since the IRONMAN incident there’s been a nasty vibe here.

And finally, what good would 56k be on a 60 slot server exactly? If you had been keeping up with the posts here since December you’d already know fine well there could be no possibility for me to play on a server of that size - that’s why when I do play on 56k it’ll be 6v6 or 8v8 max :slight_smile:

Now please lets get back to fragging, having a laugh and keeping things real.

Because so far I’ve found all Marko designed maps that I’ve played to be highly defence-favored and almost unbeatable for the attacking team, at least as long as both teams are similar skillwise and the defenders know the map. Most of his maps had flaws like chokepoints were you had to break through that the enemy could simply spam with Arty etc. or they were so huge with so many defensive positions and objectives the attacker has to reach that it was almost impossible in 30 minutes.[/quote]

you got a point tho, marko’s maps are pretty good but i surpose they do lack gameplay, especially on the last part of fun beach

he is redoing all of them so hopefully there will be alot of gameplay bug fixes :slight_smile:

@ evilsock… RtCW maps dont pass over to ET??? maybe you should try the TC_BASE map… This is so good its made it into most Tournaments, which most NONE Rtcw maps HAVENT… still think the maps dont cross over?

Just make the god damn map and if it dont work, then fuck it at least we tried, if it does GREAT we have another map to make ET last even longer… imo

I’d quite like to see a Tram conversion and yes tc_base is there but it’s ET tc_base, a map without the original environment intended. It’s impressive they’ve been converted at all :wink:

tc_base is the worst ET map ever. I didn’t like it much in RTCW but I hate it with a passion in ET. It’s just not made for ET and gameplay really stinks. The only way it can be played, IMO, is on ETPro with mines disabled. The reason it’s made it into competitions is because there’s a very vocal ex-RTCW contingent in ET nowadays who don’t have the imagination or the ambition to learn new maps and never really wanted to stop playing RTCW in the first place.

Pappa’s Tram is a 32 player RTCW/Shrub server, which Pappa pays for himself mostly. Pappa, incidently, being CL of “The Mystery Clan” who play ET as well and who’s one of the nicest guys I know online. It has a small but loyal following and some excellent players on there. Tram is a bit like Market Garden in that you either love it or hate it. I don’t like it myself personally, as it’s not made for competition, and I’m only really interested in properly balanced maps. “balance” and “Tram” don’t belong in the same sentence :wink:

Tram was never really played in competition in RTCW. A UK Clan called UKEG used to specify it for Clanbase ladder games, and were ridiculed for it. They play ET now and are very good at it.

I guess Tram would make a good ET map for pubs, but I’d rather hammer red-hot nails thru my dick than play it in competition. :wink:

Yep Pappa does pay for it - you can still see the original posts for how it all got started on www.trickery.net I didn’t know UKEG tried to get Tram into comps though - lol.

TC_Base is a well cool map… and you not liking it is a GREAT example of why it should be made…

Everyones tastes are different and so the map makers shouldnt listem to the few saying “tram is crap and shouldnt be in ET, etc etc”

so what is ‘porting’ or ‘converting’ exactly?!

decompile the RtCW-map open in radiant… delete all non-supported entities, add the necesary entities… and maybe adjust some textures a bit?!

ooh and a command map…

if its really that easy* i dont understand why there are only 4 converted RtCW maps when their were about 9 (if im right) in the original game

I decompiled Apple’s original Dubrovnik map to get the base for the current incarnation. He had lost the original .map in a reformat and all we could recover was a .BSP of a progress check.

  1. Everything is structural
  2. All the textures are misaligned

For RTCW conversions, you’d want to:

  1. Replace a bunch of textures
  2. Replace entities and scripting as required, since stuff has changed
  3. Add command map
  4. Script VOs and speakers
  5. A bunch of other files

also if tram was not built for ET and unplayable, constant arty fire from enemy feild opps, panzer to plast people out the tram and landmines to cover the bridge, it would be impossible for allies to win, also with allies spawning after 20 seconds when it should be 30, and axis 40!!! when they do 30 (hope that makes some sense)

ok, lets get to the point!

Tram + RTCW = :banana:

Tram + ET = :angry:

Even if it does get converted, those who dislike the map don’t have to play and whinge about it. Nobody is forcing you to play it, just leave the server or even better don’t even download it.
