to Steam, or not to Steam

(.Chris.) #161

Yeah sure thing

Like I said I said in other thread, personally I’m indifferent about steam been used but it does cause problems for some people and can understand why that those with genuine problems are a bit miffed at the decision, although there is a fair bit of unjust hate from others.

Steam is watching you 8-|

(light_sh4v0r) #163

@Senethro: good for you it worked just fine, that doesn’t make me like Steam more though. And Punkbuster may not be a problem, but the other problem I mentioned is much worse and would definately put me off playing the whole thing altogether. It’s not that the whole download takes that long, usually less than 2 hours. But those 2 hours I wanted to spend ingame with friends, who will be long gone when my download finishes. After that happened a number of times I just gave up and didn’t try again, what’s the point having a game that only works when you don’t want to play it?

^ what he said

Sounds like a problem with your computer than Steam Light Shavor. I’ve never heard of something like that happening before. Clean reinstall, check HD for bad sectors, verify cache integrity, check for weird read only properties, delete blob.dll. Those are the usual fixes. Now you’ll know for Brink in the unlikely event it repeats.

(Voxie) #166

I’ve heard some reports that the Steam In-game Overlay doesn’t play nice with CoD4, so try to either disable it or manually launch iw3mp/sp.exe from your steam\steamapps\common folder. Hope this helps!

(LyndonL) #167

Hopefully the new Steam that’s out soon will resolve some of these overlay conflicts. I know that in Farcry it doesn’t work either. Not a big deal, but annoying having to CTRL-ALT-DEL whenever someone messages you.

(light_sh4v0r) #168

Yeah tried all that to no avail. Not gonna bother with it now, I don’t want to play the game anyway.

(Voxie) #169

Those of you who’ve yet to try Steam, now is an excellent time to do so. Portal, which uses Steamworks features - namely achievements - is available for free until the 24th here. Just click Install and you’ll be asked to create an account if you don’t already have one. The whole procedure is pain-free and takes just a minute. There’s also a dozen-or-so free Steam games listed here, in case anyone’s interested.

(Crytiqal) #170

I just installed Steam, but it seems I cannot add any friends? wth?

I first need to have a game installed that is listed by Steam, and it doesn’t automaticly pick up the games I already have installed. (Like CoD4 for example).

So what does this program do again?

(LyndonL) #171

You’re able to add games (programs) that are not from Steam as an add on application. It lets you then launch said game from the list you already have. Good way of keeping everything together. Steam letsyou assign games to groups too. I have mine split into coop and singleplayer and tools.

(SockDog) #172

I’m always kind of jealous that I own the games already when this happens.

Anyone who’s passing up on the chance to try out Steam while getting the chance at playing one of the best games ever is clearly not in possession of a full tea set.

@Crytiqal

As LyndonL said you can add games that were not purchased through Steam manually to your Steam library but the functionality is pretty much limited to launcher only. That said some games allow you to register the key on Steam at which point they’ll integrate right in as if you bought them there (I did this with my old copy of Prey and now never need to go hunt for the DVD).

As for friends and what steam does. I guess apart from the obvious distribution platform there are social tools. You should be able to add friends that are also on steam but there is no cross platform stuff so email/msn/live/xfire usernames won’t help.

Steam currently peaks at around 2.3 million users online. Leave it running in the background like another instant messenger program and you can be invited to games by your friends, chat etc. They’re still building on that stuff though so while I appreciate it’s not hard to knock more of the obvious stuff they’ve yet to do.

Give it a try, install Portal. If you’re gonna play Brink, join the Brink group etc.

(Voxie) #173

Speaking of which, it would be nice if we had an official game group. wink, wink.

If you launch the game using the steam launcher you can also use steam overlay in non steam games, which is a pretty nice tool.
And your steam friends know what you are playing based on the shortcut title you use for the non steam game.

You need to be very special before you’re allowed to join the SD Sluts!

I didn’t know that! Will give it a try with my Humble Bundle games I got yesterday (if you haven’t checked that out yet do so now, offer expires tomorrow 14th May PC/Mac/Linux).

BTW - I store these small indie and DRM free purchases on my Google Docs account (max file upload is 1gig, no filetype restrictions). Space is dirt cheap $5 per 20gig per year and is spread over all of google’s products.

Sorry, maybe too much OT info there but I’m a nightmare at local backups and organising. As a result I tended to avoid buying digitally unless it was from someone established like Steam. Just passing on the perhaps obvious revelation.

(DarkangelUK) #178

You can add firefox.exe to Steam which will allow the Steam overlay if you play QuakeLive, just rename the shortcut within Steam to say Quake Live so people know what you’re playing.

(Crytiqal) #179

It seemes I first had to purchase or download a game from Steam itself before the friends functionality became available.

Thank god Portal was free now or I would have had to buy something :s

(SockDog) #180

There are several permanently free games on Steam (Voxie linked to them) and also demos. Never tried adding friends to a new Steam account without any games, seems a strange restriction. Anyone else confirm this is normal?
