to Steam, or not to Steam
yep, I’ll vote with my wallet, and my mass e-mail buttons on the forums I admin

and pardon me while I bombard all the open ports

:stroggbanana:
How old are you? Act it…

(Nail) #142

I have distinct reasons not to want Steam, I tire of little minds telling me it’s the best when it’s far from it. I’ll also use whatever means I have at my disposal to let my views be known.

(Ryan) #143

Why the f* should I need to be forced into installing some 3th party app to play a friggin game?

I don’t want **** on my pc, I just want to play. And I certainly do not want other people forcing me to install anything I don’t want.

No steam or bb.

(Senethro) #144

If you’ve bought any games in the past 2 years you’ve almost certainly invited 3rd party apps onto your computer. Steams polite enough to announce its presence and try to offer other functionality though, but that always gets the paranoid people accusing valve of steeling thayr megahurtz

(DarkangelUK) #145

Sure if you don’t want to install Steam then don’t do it, it’s the whole “I’m going to convince all my friends not to get this game!!!” part that’s confusing me. You talk about small minds, yet you seem to want to convince others to follow your train of thought rather than let them make up their own minds… which is just plain sad.

(Voxie) #146

Hopefully that’s just him blowing off steam (pun intended, deal with it :D) after hearing an announcement that was not to his liking. Calling people small-minded because of differences in opinion and wanting to mailbomb friends just reflects poorly unto himself and does in no way help his cause.

(Nail) #147

no mailbomb was ever mentioned, I run a gaming forum, I will let my members know that Brink requires Steam, most of us have our own reasons for not liking Steam, we also don’t support W:ET 2.55, Jaymod, No Quarter or any other xp save mod.

(INF3RN0) #148

I’m not nearly as concerned with if steam is good/bad, but just how smart of a decision it is for a brand new game like Brink. It seems really unnecessary and risky to me (the reasons not to make this a steam game are huge for a lot of reasons), but if SD/Bethesda want to drive potential customers away and limit the future community then that is their decision. I really hope that everyone expecting a let down are worrying for no reason… glhf I am getting tired of wasting my money.

(sereNADE) #149

steam doesn’t kill games. people kill games.

on the bright side at least this level of exposure on steam should result in periodic sales and a healthier life span (i know retail boxes are often found cheaper in many cases). sure quake wars is on steam but it was just shoved into the attic without any real sales or banner exposure. but a steam reliant game such as killing floor is still wildly popular and has banner ads after 6-8 months. in case you didn’t know the ads in steam are relegated to the store page.

(Apples) #150

Nail just got SD justice league’d, glhf explaining to these people that they are wrong for the most part, good luck brink with steam only / turtle like gameplay and noobfriendly “all in one” button, we warned enuff about the flaw, but apparently its easier to lick bawls than expressing some real concerns about the game…

@ voxie: still steam only is restraining potential customer, so its silly selling wise, maybe for the VAC , friend list etc its easier, but IMO its just SD gettin lazy here, they have all coded from etqw, no need for steam.

Steam only + smart + slow gameplay + no sniper + instant granade + we get the hype up != SD imo, so yeah gl with a potentialy great game that was ruined, FPS world is dead to me imo, at least get some bawls and call it MW3, mass consumption ftw idd

Sick of these ppl, me gonna play MW2 instead.

(Nail) #151

ooh, someone’s bitter, lighten up Applepie, I don’t see slow, or that smart does anything special, you can do the things manually just as well, and with practice better so it’s not an issue for me, and grenades, puleeeze that’s like the Bethesda forums talking about the necessity for gloves to match their personas, grenades are good in any function imo. I just don’t like Steam being required, I’m in a minority, but it ain’t the first time

(Apples) #152

I’m afraid that the turtle argument is for another topic, I still cant get how can you possibly miss a headshot at this speed

(Nail) #153

try it. find out

(light_sh4v0r) #154

Ow, major letdown for me here, I really don’t want to get this game through steam. I have steam and I also have a number of games on it, but in my experience it’s rubbish.

Example: I got CoD4 on Steam as a gift from a friend. (wouldn’t have paid any money for that myself, but that’s another story.) Downloading and installing the game worked fine. I could however not play online because steam refused to update punkbuster for the game. And since the game had so many hackers, it required an update every week. I got tired quickly of manually updating PB. What was worse, was that steam would break the game install. Not once, but at least twice a month. I had to uninstall and redownload the entire 9 GB every 2 weeks because the installation was fubar’d once again, even though steam thought the game was just fine. I have many more complaints over many other issues I’ve had with steam, so I really refuse to buy a game I plan to play a lot through steam. VAC I haven’t had issues with, but then again I haven’t played many games that used it.

(Senethro) #155

WTH? I got CoD4 on Steam and that never happened to me. In fact I’d updated Punkbuster about once a year and never had that problem.

(Voxie) #156

And even if he did, that problem wouldn’t be existent in Brink, since it doesn’t use PB. It seems to me like those who have this whole vendetta against Steam focus on one small thing to nitpick on and then drastically blow things out of proportions. Here’s the short list of things brought up in the last day that won’t effect your experience with Brink whatsoever: Steam potentially supporting in-game ads, Punkbuster not automatically updating itself, thinking that just because you can buy the game online it won’t be available at retailers, not finding an empty dedicated server in L4D to use for scrimming, some people getting VAC bans due to an obscure Half-Life mod which modified a DLL-file, unverified reports of someone getting banned while not even connected to a VAC-secured server, insinuating that by reading between the lines of Valve’s privacy policy uncovers some sort of big brother-esque conspiracy, Gabe Newell being overweight…

I mean really.

(murka) #157

You forgot steam price being 5-300% higher.

(Voxie) #158

I already got that covered:

thinking that just because you can buy the game online it won’t be available at retailers

Just buy in a store if the online price exceeds the local MSRP.

(.Chris.) #159

You don’t learn without asking questions and that’s all I did with asking about if you can still buy in store…

I mean really.

(Voxie) #160

That was in no way meant as an insult, Chris. Just trying to set things straight, since a lot of false information seems to be flying around here. Sorry if I offended you. In case you’re still not brought up to speed, you can buy the game on disc and install it as usual, with the key difference being that you’ll be asked to register the game to a Steam account at some point during the installation.
