TLR Mapping Contest - 150€ Cashprize

(acQu) #41

Well based on stealths comments i just checked out pirates and tounine. For tounine map: i don’t know, but i bet i was not the only one who just jumped into that senseless fountain the first time i saw it lol. There could be at least some water under there, but i guess it should be like that.

Pirates … weeeeellll  nothing to say, i just hope the mapper does map more for the community. It’s just awsome eyecandy.

Gameplaywise i think only a testgame with lots of clients can decide…

Other maps i will check out soon, did not have the time so far to check them all.

Actually latest version of castle is castle_b1a

(shagileo) #51

ahaaa !
Great I could download the maps now

Earlier today, that website was flooded with visitors apparently (like varsovie said)
But now I can download them - goodie

Thanks again for your offer Varsovie (see pm) - but it seems I can take care of it now

(Etnies) #52

I think pirates has the most potential nice map and nice textures, but i can’t help but wish it was a World War 2 ship instead of a pirate ship!

(macbeth) #53

i like the map a lot and we have it on our server
i will like to can have an other sky
i watched in the map scripts but not found the script for the sky like for example we have for venice and we did that for this map

remapshader
“textures/skies_c1/co_venicesky” “textures/turbulent_blue/turbulent_sky”
remapshaderflush"

So did everyone here just play the pretty map or what?

Myself and couple of the other mappers are pretty disappointed with the overall reception of the maps as hardly anyone has provided feedback for the maps except for Pirates.

If anyone here has actually played castle I would like to hear your thoughts on the gameplay, if you couldn’t guess already I’m not concerned with the aesthetics just yet. Pirates is an awesome looking map indeed and Firefly has outdone himself but can we have some love for the other entries?

For now I had the chance to test 4 out of 5 maps:

castle_b1.pk3
pirates_b1.pk3
tm_jungle_b1.pk3
tounine_b1.pk3

I really respect all of your work, it’s amazing !
It’s great to see a whole series of new maps and they’re all nicely done (the ones I’ve seen so far).

My feedback:

castle :

One of the biggest maps out of the list.
It has this great Medal of Honour 1 feeling (meant as a compliment ey).
The structures of the buildings are rather “simple” - mostly blocks, but that doesn’t take the feeling away in any way. Besides, when playing, you don’t really pay all too much attention to the structures when the map has a cool feel to it.

Here and there you can still see some caulkwork, but as you said - you’ll deal with that later
Though, I found something hovering near the castle itself (see screenshot) - most likely a missing model

Also, be sure to add some ambient sound to it.

I haven’t played the map online yet, so I can’t provide you other feedback than that, but I’m sure any feedback is welcome

Pirates :

Mapping art at its best.
Great attention to detail and feel (with sound and lighting) .

However, and this is what I noticed in most maps, be sure to specify your objdata more.
It’s often you see: get the documents/gold and secure them
but you don’t know where.
Sure enough, a truck near an objective mostly says enough, but for newcomers it’s pretty crucial.

Only Castle seemed to have the most specific objdata around so far.

tm_Jungle :

Cool map as well !
Reminds me of the early Tomb Raider games (or the ones on playstation).

I like the ‘sunny’ feeling and the way you played with ambient sound.
However, the jungle ambient sound reminds me more of an industry in progress, rather than a jungle ambient
But then again, I’ve never really been in a jungle so …

Also be sure to specify where to deliver the docs

Tounine:

I think this one has the highest ‘competition’ feel to it.
It has pretty much all the things an interesting battle could ask for: escortable tank (not too long, not too short), barrier, docs

and plenty of alternate routes

Should be interesting to try that one out as well online

All in all, great work you guys !
Thanks for giving us another set of awesome maps !!

EDIT:

By the way, is it allowed to host these maps already?

(KeMoN) #56

Like shagileo I haven’t had a chance to test the maps online because I don’t have SLAC and that server requires it.

So I tested the maps on a local server. Every map worked fine except jungle but I suppose that was my installation so I can’t give feedback on that map.

Frozen:

Stylistic:
I’m really sorry that the critics may seem harsh but in my opinion there is plenty of work needed to improve that map. It is currently on a very simple and low level and the terrain has several leaks. I know that all the mappers had quite a short time period to work on those maps but you still have time to improve them as I understood it right.

Gameplay:
Can’t say that much yet but the attacking team will certainly run into trouble since there is only one way to the second area of the map.

Tounine:

Stylistic:
Style of terrain looks kind of familiar…like the one in Supply Depot…a bit unrealistic but doesn’t matter! Great way to block the sight.
The buildings already look smooth and nice. Not just square blocks but with a more round shape great work with them.

Gameplay:
Like Supply Depot I think that one will have a great gameplay aspect again. Since I haven’t played the map online with other players I’m not that sure but I think the balance is quite good in that map. There are always tunnels and bunkers where it could get too narrow.

Castle:

Stylistic:
Already great work on the town. I especially like the streets with the trams.
Like shagileo said the buildings are quite sharp in their shape but I suppose that is linked to the lack of time.
Also the beginning place, where you spawn as spectator is especially nice. I like the upper floor and the wall towards it. It isn’t just a straight wall but smooth and the top is also nice with the destroyed pieces. The house next to it with the “flying” massive roof looks weird. Maybe you want to add some girders to the wall?
Seems to me that you created the castle after the town because the level of detail here is quite low and the courtyard is rather empty. Though I like the church in the courtyard and the basements of the flak guns.

Gameplay:
Can’t say that much on gameplay but you surely need to fill that castle courtyard with some things to hide. In the town there are already lot’s of several ways the players can take so I’m not worrying about heavy unbalancing of the teams.
Since I haven’t played that map either I’m also not sure about that statement but maybe you want to think about adding a part to the map. That the allies need to escort a tank through the streets to their current first place and then the tank destroys the tunnel blockade. Would give the map a street-fight atmosphere but I suppose the allies have already got enough work with the flak guns.

Pirates:

Stylistic:
I guess I don’t need to say anything else to the style of the map. I just agree to the earlier statements that this map looks awesome. I just hope that the high amount of time needed for creating a map that eye-candy didn’t affect the gameplay part too much. Sadly the castle eltz map is also not the best gameplay map but one of the most astonishing maps out there.

Gameplay:
This map will surely have the street-fight atmosphere! If I counted right there are only 2 maximum 3 different main ways through the streets. If you look at the map from above that part of the map is quite short and narrow. But most houses are also opened so they also provide options and there are also several opened balcony’s as well so let’s just hope the best.

Jungle:

Like I said my ET installation won’t let me play that map so I can’t say a thing about it. I guess I need to install a new version to test that map. I will do that later.

All in all I agree to shagileo. Great work you guys!!! Will be a hard decision to vote for a map! Give your best in the final version.

(stealth6) #57

Taking a look at whinefire there are lots of remarks towards all the maps, not much more I can add.

(schnoog) #58

For those who want to test the maps:
All maps are also available at wolffiles.de , where you could start one out of 7 testserver (5 x 2.60B & 2 x 2.55) with the mod (etmain, etpro, jay , nq , etnam available) and map you want.
No SLAC needed.

(.Chris.) #59

Sound is in sync in game, dunno how to fix for the video though.

I’ll release the modified models and an example pk3 once I’ve finished rest of map.

EDIT: added some recoil and synced the sound on clip bit better

<- video editing noob.

(KeMoN) #60

Awesome work on the Flak cannon .Chris.
Would also fit nicely into our mapping project. Looking forward to it. Maybe you can add a bigger “muzzle_flash”? The current one seems a little small for a 88mm gun.
