Tired of the Hate

[QUOTE=Nexolate;370357]That was pretty much my experience too.
Plus there wasn’t enough variation between weapons, they all felt the same despite all the little modifications.

That’s my feeling as well. Also all the environments tended to look similar (all shades of brown and grey) and it felt like I was playing in basically the same area for the entire game.

OT: I think things have gotten a lot better on the forums since some of the worse trolls left town/got banned. I’m not going to name names, but I think things are a lot better than they were as little as 1-2 months ago.

True, it’s a lot less doom and gloom now. There’s more discussion threads rather than threads intended to directly attack the developers.

There’s still the one or two lurkers though who create silly threads either stating the obvious, like how the game is defense-oriented, or making mountains out of molehills.

God forbid any more crosshair customisation posts.

Nexo

You did pretty well! After playing MMOs for years and starting to hate them, I wondered why I’d bought an FPS that attempted to bring MMO mechanics to a genre that doesn’t need them and doesn’t benefit from them. I also didn’t go “wooo” when I found out the game had 53 bazillion “different™” weapons. True story. In fact I got completely sick of constantly comparing stats of dropped weapons when what I actually, really wanted to do, was shoot stuff. Don’t get me started on the FOV.

Ah well, at least it was in a sale.

At this point I hope the people left around really enjoy the game and want to see it succeed. Hopefully we’re past the initial wave of anger, disappointmet, or whatever else anyone was feeling. I think we all pretty much agree on most of the areas the game could improve as well as what additions it needs (especially on PC). Therefore, there’s a lot more freedom for discussion and talking about the finer points of the game while at the same time keeping those imperfections in mind and hoping for further improvements.

Me three, I played up to the first DLC and halfway through second playthrough. Just couldn’t keep my attention especially with other games comming out around that time. The second one looks like it will be much improved overall but don’t know if I will get it, maybe if they release a compiled version with all the DLC down the road.

Particle fire killed Shattered Horizon.

Not sure what you consider a “fan” but I got 153,619 XP in ET:QW with 603.63 hours played (no idea what my stats are for W:ET but I played that more) and I think Brink rocks.

I really enjoyed ET and TF2 but brink is by far my favorite class based shooter. Also I have heard the hating has gone down since release.

(tokamak) #49

It STARTED at the release.

@Jimmy James: Please note the word “many.”

Yeah, but whenever we display it openly, this happens:

[QUOTE=Smokeskin;370491]Yeah, but whenever we display it openly, this happens:

Yeah. I noticed.
Friday, I ran the brief case through the enemy spawn area on Container City in a heated match. To the right of the Storage Unit if you are facing towards where we have to deliver it! I dropped down from above the Storage Unit to get it. They had the other two routes covered; the barricade and the path the bot came down. So I bolted towards their spawn area! Bullets were whizzing over my head! And enemy was charging down the hill after they spawned! I was sliding, ducking and weaving like a lunatic. My team was yelling at me. “Don’t go that way!”

I made it through and delivered it. And we won!

The other team rage quit they were so mad! Only a crazy fool would turn and run towards their spawn! But it was the last place they thought to think I’d go! It Worked! Awesome game.

Brink could’ve done with a lot more weapons, there isn’t enough variation either. Why are all the weapons unlocked from the start anyway?

(Nexolate) #55

Tbh I don’t get why so many people blatantly dislike this game. I mean I can understand there are people out their with genuinine concerns (some of which are listed in my sig) but they strike me as the people who would happily play Brink if their requests got answered. E.g. Codine with his (her?) ATI card problems.

No, it’s all the people who go away and then write about Brink saying “it sucks” or “it’s horrible” or “this is a complete waste of money”. Perhaps I’m just naturally biased but I find this game a heap of fun at times and I don’t understand why the people who could play it would hate it to that degree. Can anyone explain honestly?

Regards,
Nexo

EDIT: Yes, I know Brink could have been a lot of things. The fact of the matter is that the core concept is pretty fun, it just needs a few extra things like weapon tweaks and new maps.

Brink is like Aaron Rogers developing in the shadow of the former starting QB, Brett Favre (ET:QW). At first, you’re only gonna see his faults until he’s able to prove his worth and carve out his own niche. You just have to give Brink, er, Aaron Rogers the chance. And who know’s. With continued support and believing in the people involved, anything can happen?

That doesn’t answer my question though, I asked why people tend to walk away hating this game so much.

Because its hard. On an individual level at its core. Steep learning curve. You don’t get instant gratification. You can’t measure your individual skill at a level where you feel regardless of the outcome, win or lose you still got your kills. Like other games. Or win in Brink single-handedly. Also, the game punishes you for mistakes and isn’t linear even in the Campaign. And is also mercilessly cruel if you approach the game as you would more casual FPS games. Even in the Campaign on easy. The challenges are challenging to a fault at times; for example, you spend 20 minutes fighting hard to hack only to have your progress completely erased with 30 seconds to go and have bots who wouldn’t do the heavy lifting by completing the objectives. Defense has the advantage. Some body types were locked, restricting the parkour at the start. Even though the Parkour This challenge allows you to use light body? Not sure I that one. I forget.

There are also aspects meant to divide your strength into a team strength, and this frustrates someone who wants to take control of all actions by themselves. But if you love cooperation, and understand the team concept, then you have a ball especially if you can make friends along the way and continue playing with them.

(Setting aside the crew of folks who have extensive experience with SD games and expected something more/different based on their experience with WET, ETQW, etc, - b/c i cant speak for them)

but I think lots of (new) players “hate” all sorts of games (some of which are critically acclaimed or commercially successful). I hate COD. I hated Infamous (i gave it another chance, and found it ok). but lots of people love these games…or at least like them an awful lot.

hate can come from not understanding the game, but it can also come from perfectly understanding the game and hating what it is doing (or trying to do (or failing to do)). so to ask “why do people hate this game” is like saying why do people hate genetically modified crops?, or why do people hate modern art? why do people hate hip hop? etc etc.

there are 2 problems. 1) the assumption embedded in the question that people (read: all people) actually hate this game (or GMO, or MA, or hip hop). and 2) that there is a unitary reason behind the hatred, that can be easily explained/categorized,etc/

but then throw in the interwebz/forums/etc into the equation, along with the squeaky wheel phenomenon, and it’s not surprising that a forum run by the company that made a game that experienced a somewhat polarizing release (for a number of factors) ends up lumping a continuum of responses into a polemic, whereby you become either a hater or a fanboy.

and behavior begets additional behavior, if you feel as though you are forced to choose a side, inevitably you do (or you just ignore that **** and keep rolling on your merry way) either way, the voices most likely to speak out are likely those with a strong opinion…can you imagine a forum with a bunch of “meh?” type posts? it would get no traffic! but give me a good “why all the hate?”, “10 reasons why you are an idiot for liking/hating this game”, or “SD, fix/dont-fix this!” post, and apparently, i’m all ears (and occasionally fingers (to type, pervo))

I get so frustrated when people say this game is so easy and just a carbon copy of CoD because they think they can play it like CoD. This game actually EMPHASIZES teamwork.
