time for a beta/demo? seriously!

(kilL_888) #1

its been a while since ive been here i think.

brink’s release is getting closer and closer. its not even 2 months away from launch and i think its about time for a beta. i know this topic has been discussed a lot of times.

but it think its very important to do a beta/demo. i recently bought crysis2, which is a great game, but it has some heavy issues that could have been prevented if the developer would have spent more time in either internal testing or a public beta test. there was actually a multiplayer demo for pc but that doesnt solve anything though.

crysis2 is currently fighting with some major issues in its multiplayer part. things from not beeing able to join a server to not saving xp and stats. to me it seems there actually wasnt ANY internal playtesting at all to resolve this issues.

for a costumer its very dissapointing to take part in a beta test after already buying the game. its just frustrating. the most annoying thing is that you dont have a clue if there will ever be a patch to fix this issues. and if, when? so you are forced to play a beta, dont have a possibility to get your money back and you might consider this messed up situation for the next game crytek will release.

so. i think there are enough reasons to release a public test build to prevent major issues. like connection issues, character progression and stuff like that thats essentiel for brinks success. its basicly just a tech demo to make sure all the tech works. balancing will probably be fixed from time to time via patches. thats secondary priority. most important is the game runs and works as supposed to.

when i buy a game i want to jump right into multiplayer. in crysis2 this wasnt possible. it hope, and im actually pretty confident it will be possible in brink. but i would even more confident if the public could take place in ensuring the game runs fine when it comes out at the end of may.

thanks for reading.

removed demo for better understanding.

Your input is appreciated…not.
Demo talk is done to death, it is out when it is out.

(murka) #3

It’s too early for demo, and they said no for beta.

Your talking about PC or Console beta/demo?

(Herandar) #6
  1. You bought the game anyway, Based on this, you will probably buy Brink, so why should the developer spend time and money making a beta/demo?

  2. As you said, there was a Demo for Crysis 2, and the game still has problems. What makes you think a Brink beta/demo would fix any potential problems?

(I don’t totally disagree with you, but I’m arguing for the other side.)

He mentions PC, and server issues implies PC. Also, if it was a console game, he could have gotten his money back.

(kilL_888) #7

console? what is that?

for a beta you need to be able to give feedback. a console player does not necessarily have a pc or internet connection to give that feedback.

imho, a console player has no demand on playing a beta in generel. a console player plays a game for a few weeks, even months, and then throws it away to spend more money on the next heavily advertised title. but thats only my humble opinion and a different topic.

[/QUOTE]

yea. i bought the game because i played the singleplayer from the leaked beta version. see where this might go?

i was shocked when i tried the multiplayer first. because nothing really worked. and i consider this for the next game crytek will release. i might not buy that next title because of that huge let down.

(Nikto) #8

different platform, different issues.(sometimes)

anyway, it’s too late for a betaO.o if it’s releasing in less than 2months… too late for changing certain gameplay-elements(wich is what a open beta is for anyway, public opinion), it’s probably too late to start rooting out player-submitted bugs(finding the real bugs is usually the problem here, if people send any at all…).
as for a demo, perhaps after launch. no reason to spoil a majority of the game by letting people spew the internet full with data prior to launch is there?

as a last thought, people should really start knowing the difference between beta(finding bugs, giving feedback on the game) and a demo(trying the game out for yourself). because i’d swear the majority of the gamers believe a beta is a demo, and consumers never have to find bugs or give feedback in such a thing.

(Herandar) #9

Other than software piracy, no, not really.

(Seyu) #10

but it think its very important to do a beta/demo.
There’s a difference between a beta and a demo.

for a costumer its very disappointing to take part in a beta test after already buying the game. its just frustrating.

How can you take part in a beta when the game has already released?

Splash damage have their own playtesting team, they also did a closed beta for the game.

(kilL_888) #11

i didnt say i “downloaded” the leak. i did say i played it. i dont think that has anything to do with piracy, but i may be wrong.

reality for, i wouldnt say most of, but a certain number of pc players is though that they pirate their games before considering buying. (lack of demo and/or beta)…

i dont remember who exactly, but it was a ceo of a huge publishing company, said: “first you make sure you create a game thats worth pirating. then you take care of how its not beeing pirated.” or something like that.

so. what im trying to say is… for a pirate it makes no difference if there is a demo or a beta. he downloads the game, plays it, buys it, or not.

for a fan though, it makes a difference if he/she plays a game thats polished and working or not.

(Diablo85) #12

SD have already confirmed that there won’t be a beta or a demo (before release) so this thread is pointless.

(kilL_888) #13

they also announced 2 release dates prior the the may 2011 release date. things (can) change.

if this thread is pointless then why reply to it anyway? that makes me a troll. which makes you a troll too, coze i reply to your pointless reply to a pointless thread.

I don’t think its likely they will change their plan. They probally won’t have the time to make a demo for this game.

And I wasn’t trolling. There is already a demo thread (this week it was announced there won’t be a demo).

(DarkangelUK) #15

You’re not getting a beta… dealwithit!

(Maawdawg) #16

The main problem is a lot of people seem not to understand that a beta and a demo aren’t even remotely the same thing. A beta is for the devs to get playtesters to help make the game better, while a demo is a marketing element that uses a small portion of game to sell more copies. Some companies use the terms interchangeably and use their betas AS glorified demos, which is completely stupid. I am glad Bethesda and SD aren’t going that route. Putting out a beta has some benefits on the production end but it also puts an unfinished product in uninformed people’s hands (who think it is a demo of the final product or just don’t bother to even report anything) and that can turn into negative word of mouth about your game and just waste your time. You are better off just getting a good internal test team, doing (small, quiet) closed betas, and playtests that you fill with people yourself. You are better off not even bothering to let the public at large touch an unfinished game, imo, because the average gamer isn’t a good beta tester anyway.

There isn’t going to be a beta at this point when the game will go Gold in a month or so. If they were going to release one it would have been way earlier than this to give them more time to fix reported issues and bugs, then iterate on it.

A demo is another story, they could put one out but it really doesn’t make sense to put one out 50 days before a game releases at all. Two weeks before release would probably be at the absolute maximum, otherwise people will forget about the game inbetween. The problem is, how do you make a small demo portion of this game? Is one objective enough? Is a whole level too much? All classes playable? Include customization? It isn’t as simple as everyone makes it out to be when they just say “we want a demo”.

All that said, did we really need another topic begging for one? There have been way more than enough of these and obviously SD knows demo demand is there. Hearing about it for the 348th time isn’t going to make a difference. They will do what they think is best for their game with or without these redundant threads.

(Schwarzeis) #17

Console players can give feedback too, the only BETAs I know of on the console have been multiplayer ONLINE, meaning you need to have internet

The developers can either take data from the overall play, % of people dying here and here by this and by that, or people can go to their forum and tell about bugs and glitches, and maybe ideas for improving the overall game

And to download something on a console you must have internet :l

(DarkangelUK) #18

Doesn’t the PS3 also have a web browser?

(Nail) #19

yep, but xbox doesn’t
