Thoughts about a free version of W:ET

(nUllSkillZ) #1

Some thoughts about a free version of W:ET.
At the moment the engine and the client source is GPL’ed (not sure about client source though).

All the other assets (textures, models, sounds, shaders, animation data) isn’t free available at the moment as far as I know.
Not sure if all of these assets could be replaced by free versions.
The shaders for example.
There’s only one way to achieve an effect.
Or the player model animation data.

Also not sure how this is handled at OpenArena.

Name of a free version could be OpenET  .

More security bugs will be found I guess.

On side note good moder’s will come forward with new fixes, ideas, etc.

Eventually I see dark side vs good side battle on it’s peak. From what I feel, players would be able to see total new things and even more fixes!

Kudos for all those coders, moder’s, map makers, etc who have kept this game alive.

BC2 and COD4 sucks anyways with same maps and same thing over and over! ET is da best!

The open-source edition would allow for a W:ET HD or more dynamic lighting, or other similar engine improvements.
It would remain a kludge though as the assets can only be bundled in the original W:ET installer…

EDIT: One highly interesting fix would be to increase the default hunkmegs; this is probably the most annoying setting for recent mods.

We need to add better graphics…

-bloom
-better texture quality
-AA
-idk what else is good? xD

Since the sources of the maps and now the code is released, it’s possible for a good team to create a “WWII - Infantry” (Don’t think it’s allowed to use the names “Wolfenstein” or “Enemy Territory”).
Realistic high-detailed textures, bumpmapping, reworked models, enhanced engine, more effects, maybe compatible with the custom-made maps, teamspecific stuff, mapspecific playerskins, usw… but all with the same gameplay.
If some do it, please no downstriped version for old pc’s / “pro”-gaming.

cod4 sucks cause of same maps hellreturn… ? interesting. i’m quite sure cod4 has much more custom maps than et and rtcw together, and diffrent servers play diffrent maps (in et nearly every server has oasis, supply, adlernest, braundorf, frostbite, venice, caen… same maps played over and over again.

Sad but true. :frowning:

Support for lossy audio formats like AAC, or OGG if patents become an issue, should be fairly straigthforward to implement, and would give mappers/modmakers a LOT more freedom to add custom sounds… 64kbps mono AAC is transparent in 99% of the cases, and is a vast improvemt from those horrible 320kbps .wav files. Support for png textures would also be nice, idk how hard that would be. Png files generally get significantly smaller filesizes then tga, while still having an alpha layer. You can also render them in 8-bits, which looks fine for most textures, while blowing tga far, far out the window in terms of filesize, often even beating jpg. Add a new and better zip technology, and you could probably reduce the size of most maps and mods by 3+ times

Increasing hunkmegs sounds good, but probably isn’t needed, as people who are smart enough to download a new version of ET, probably know how to change their hunkmegs as well. :stuck_out_tongue:

(FFSturm) #9

normal mapping, parallax mapping, specular maps, reflection/refraction shaders, glsl shaders, post process effects, HD textures, soft stencil shadows…
And more physics interaction (ragdolls, moveable objects…)

(Cambodunum) #10

… Team-Deathmatch
… Free-for-alll

(Scennative) #11

Fix the ****ings Bugs:

Crash when the size of a CFG over 16 KB
Max Enities, Models Polygons must to be higher
usw…

(IndyJones) #12

… wouldn’t it be easier just to write a mod for cod world at war that would add objective and class-based gameplay?

(ischbinz) #13

ya - new engine, higher limits and so on
i dream about that since more than a year

but there is one big problem - you need a bunch of nice coders

and if you don t like to have a empty engine you should make a new engine which supports the old et files -
then you have et with a new engine

and step by step you can create better textures, bigger maps, nice models and so on…

btw my dream are driveable vehicles for a new engine

btw COD is a free game like et, too?

(stealth6) #15

no COD is not free

(IndyJones) #16

but nowadays cod is affordable for EVERYBODY, especially cod 4 / waw.

u can buy brand new BOXED version of cod4 for as low as 12 EUR, GOTY edition. that is 2 hours of work in underpaid job. i guess a lot of people spend more on cigarettes per week. u buy it once and u play it forever, until u get banned. it’s good that it’s not for free, as cheaters will have to buy new game for new key, sometimes even that is not enough… what do u get in return? hundred of maps, very good engine that doesn’t require really modern pc, with thousands of players. cod engine is very flexible, therefore, not so hard to modify. it’s easier and faster to write the mod than write everything from scratch. think about it.

(zbzero) #17

I really want to know why Indyjones not stop play ET and go play only play COD, he loves that game so much. If im not wrong this splash Damage forum and this not have anything to do with a COD games, and that open source is for ET / RTCW not for COD.

(IndyJones) #18

isn’t that splash damage discussion forum? isn’t that a thread about enhancing engine? isn’t my post a suggestion what is easier, faster and BETTER to achieve that? yes it is, and yes i am playing cod games.

cod mod could be open source.

If you are trying to say to use CoD style stuff in the engine not “mod” you need to get out of the ET community.

(IndyJones) #20

that’s what i said in other threads, but here i’m saying that it’s better to write class and objective based mod to already existing game, cause it has all the graphical improvements that people would like to see in et.

bump maps? specular maps? high res textures? compressed audio support? in-game voice chat? world war 2 textures, sounds, music and models? punkbuster? thousands of players? nearly bug/exploit free engine? it’s all in call of duty world at war. just because mod would be based on cod, it doesnt mean it has to loose et ‘spirit’. look at true combat elite - it’s nearly completly diffrent game, but it’s based on et (i think it still require et to play it, doesn’t it?), or urban terror - first it required QUAKE 3 to play it! u’ve got to be blind to not understand that.
