This Video Really Sums Up The Pain of Using The Katana Due to the Melee Changes
Ok gonna jump over the whole discussion at hand and only comment on the video.

While I full heartly agree that the recovery time on the katana needs some further tweaking (standing dumbfounded, while the enemy has time to unmount an MG and kill you, is not coincidental but the norm).
I have to say overall I don’t see the problem, the last tweak made melee better again (just gotta relearn new timings once more). If you prefer the quickslash style, use knifes instead of the katana. Its not like Phantom is locked into using a katana now is he  .

Movementspeed is the key factor in melee, making Aura, Proxy, Sparks, and Kira better at straight up melee than anybody else. That held true even on Phantoms release. Only thing that saved him then, was that he could reliably get in range undetected and oneshot them, foregoing a fair melee.

The katana is pretty much the burstrifle of the melee weapons. it has the highest frontloaded damage right now (who knows might change with the kukri), if your target is low or in general squishy you can end a fight instantly preventing further damage. If you try it against someone with enough HP you are more likely going to die because of the delays.
Yes I agree, but the thing is that with these changes, he really isn’t being melee focused like he is supposed to be. Of course you could change weapons due to the loadouts but it doesn’t define him as the merc he is.

Redeye has a unique melee weapon and smoke bombs. Must be a melee merc.

Guns are an illusion~

“Trick or treat mthrfckr” =|>>>>>> ) ))

He was supposed to be the leader of the big bad guys and now he cant even kill a sawbonez in the downstairs.

Now he is as impressive as Dick Dastardly runned over.

PS: Great job with the Scrubs Trailer. It would be great to see more videos of that style.

From leader to literally the scrub that Phantom beats up in the trailer.

Lol his cloak was so visible before the update and after it, he can be seen at crazy distances. He was already useless in comp when it came to cloaking and now it’s been made even worse.

(XavienX) #26

Ikr, it’s a visible cloak…oh the irony.

(onyxMaker) #27

Phantom has access to the best SMG in the game (KEK-10). Maybe you guys should just use that instead of trying to bring a sword to a gunfight.

(RadicalMac) #28

I do use it. (Sadly I also have a Cobalt Phantom w/ Blishlok but Bronze w/ Kek-10) I also use the cloak instead as a shield to get to safety and never pull out the knife/katana unless I have to now.
But seriously, the cloak and the Katana were his main perks. Now they are pretty poor.

(Kaori1) #29

If they undid some of the damage that’s been done to Phantom, they’d first have to admit that they jumped the gun with his “balance” patch…which most likely will never happen.

A moment for our fallen merc:

RIP Phantom
2015-2015

Do you even think this game will have a solid comp scene?
It won’t, no customization, muzzleflashes, complete random balance updates based on low skill players rather than higher ones; they are literally BEGGING pro players to go on other games… like how a lot have done since the phantom nerf update.

looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool it doesn’t need customization and muzzle-flash to be competitive. But I agree with some of the rest. But seriously? lol You must not have played many competitive games.

You doesn’t need customization and muzzleflashes to be removed but they are some things that usually differenciate casual games from competitive ones, and when they get simply added/remove in the opposite direction of the competitive enviroment you can clearly see the direction the game is taking; i played enough ranked to see how me MM works, getting destroyed by outc1der and his team while i was still ranking, i simple took the grade, played a few comps and sticked to the pubs, till the phantom nerf update, wich is when stopped playing daily and only open a few times at week

(RadicalMac) #33

@jetJester I meant competitive PC GAMES, not Competitive matches.

(KattiValk) #34

Phantom as he stands now is just a 110 HP merc with the ability to broadcast his location to everyone near him wearing legitimate headphones and survive a few bullets but serves very little purpose in combat as it doesn’t last long enough to be used as a mag emptier and will turn off once you actually choose to engage. I suppose he does have a handy little stick to swing around when he’s feeling like it.

I was manning the balcony turret on Terminal (I was last alive, don’t judge) today as Fragger when I heard the ridiculously loud fwwwwwwwww of a Phantom cloak and footsteps on my right and immediately pulled out my knife and baited the fool into my team who had just freshly spawned. He did stab our useless Vassili (to his credit, he did defuse once) but was quickly gunned down by everyone else. Sure, he could have yanked out his SMG and filled my back with lead, but then how is he any different than Sawbonez? He even has the ability to revive and quickly heal while taking cover from an unfavorable engagement to pop out with the HP advantage.

(Grave_Knight) #35

I really don’t understand why they gave him so many nerfs. The only legitimate complaint I heard was about that beyblade exploit. Most the other complaints were from people unwilling to learn how to combat him. I’ll give them the 110 HP and I don’t really care about the cloak cool down (though I think they might have over did it by adding an extra 4 seconds) but there was no real reason to nerf his sword to unusable, nor make him as visible as he is when cloaked. And what’s funny is, from what I hear about competitive play, pre-nerf he wasn’t even that powerful.

(Vulcan) #36

I fail to understand why some of you cant comprehend that we use Phantom With his Katana and not his Gun because then whats the point of using Him over any other Merc with the Kek-10 or Crotzni, Any other Merc with the same SMG’s could do a Much better job than Phantom.

(XavienX) #37

IKR, the Katana is what he is focused on. Using primary as a solution and ditching meleeing completely defeats the purpose of the concept on this merc.

random balance updates are like the definition of beta and they will have to keep happening until the majority decides it’s balanced

and customization, heard of counter strike?

I agree the phantom needs work though

(Ottah) #39

Sure the melee turn limiter could use some more work on the heavy swing, and the guy had some questionable misses with it in the video, but lets not pretend the weapon is garbage, not playing like an idiot already goes a long way. the weapon is slow, phantom is slow, so dont chase people with it. use it to punish people that come to you, or run in to you, or bodyblock doors with your invis and punish the light fast classes that arrive first.

If SD could finetune the current melee turn limiter to a point where it prevents exploits, but where it woundt be noticable during normal gameplay, that already would help katana loving phantoms alot as well as all the other mercs that like to whip out their melee every now and then.

Please post your feedback about melee in the melee changes feedback thread that i’ve created in the weapons section, I’m sure that kind of feedback helps SD alot more then creating a bunch of ragey phantom threads.

(Indefinite) #40

I don’t play enough as it is, and I need practice on the mercs I play in competitive/dirtycups…

But this thread makes me want to play Phantom a lot more.

Funny thing is, a guy my group will drag into competitive frequently pretty much only plays Phantom and he’s consistently in 3rd at all times. Considering he doesn’t play objectives that much, and doesn’t get EV-damage/repair xp, that really should say something.
