This video explains the pain of using the katana nowadays and how it’s almost pretty much useless in situations that it’s supposed to be useful.

Ok, proxy and aura are actually better than phantom himself…
I don’t play him anymore now. Nice video
Tsk…
C’mon, Splash Damage. You took it a little too far with the nerfs.
The Aura/Proxy comparison is ridiculous. The fact other mercs are more efficient at killing with melee than a merc who’s strength is supposed to be a melee is just sad.
Phantom is so horrible now that it saddens me when I see people playing him on the bottom of the scoreboard
The guy in the video seemed to be able to kill the aura while on her med station with a Rhino standing right next to her, then he tries to kill the Rhino aswell? Common sense says take the one kill then run
‘‘OMG CANT GET TRIPLE KILLS without trying! Phantom nerfed so bad!’’
Because… you know… you don’t have a pistol or SMG to shoot people with…
but in all seriousness that and making him as visible as he is now when moving is just a bit too much, that and the 10 HP removal, maybe…
Ok, then use the smaller melee weapons instead of the katana. Phantom gets those too.
What’s the point of using Phantom at all then, especially if you can’t use his unique weapon? His cloak might justify using just one of the knives, but SD borked that too by making it way too obvious. Might as well just use Vassili and ninja people with better speed.

He has guns. Good ones. He has a cloak and a shield. He is not defined by a melee weapon that other mercs will get access to.

lol…
Give me a good reason why I should use Phantom over Fragger.

Why should I do that? If the number of players using Phantom drops SD might take another look at his stats. As long as Phantom remains popular in usage they won’t touch him.
Oh, and you aren’t looking for reasons to use Phantom. You are looking for reasons to argue with me over Phantom. Everything I have to say has been said in plenty of other threads. No reason to repeat myself anymore.

This I agree. He does have the kek-10 and crotzni which are great guns. I just find it a shame that his katana is crippled, but oh well. Maybe SD will take another look at him after watching how he plays with Red Eye a bit.
I understood he was Phantom’s biggest counter before.

I think my question is fairly simple. Every mercenary has pros and cons… I’m just asking you what would make you want to play Phantom over Fragger? Think of it as a noob asking for some advice. Help a noob out. I’m not trying to argue… I’m just looking for a little giggle.

If I remember correctly the subject of this thread was the difficulty of using the katana post nerf. Let’s try to keep this thread on topic. You can find what you are looking for in plenty of other threads.

Well yes… you are right. The subject of this thread is about the difficulty of using the Katana… Although with that being said… A moderator brought up his “good” guns, cloak and shield so I thought… Maybe I could’ve get some advice in regards of Phantom in general instead of his Katana specifically.

Sadly, I sometimes wonder if he was given a SMG unlike in Alpha stages where he only had a pistol was because SD knew people would call for nerfs and Phantom would end up not being able to be melee focused
And I’m really worried on how much more RedEye would just make Phantom underpowered if he doesn’t get any better tweaks.
Ok gonna jump over the whole discussion at hand and only comment on the video.
While I full heartly agree that the recovery time on the katana needs some further tweaking (standing dumbfounded, while the enemy has time to unmount an MG and kill you, is not coincidental but the norm).
I have to say overall I don’t see the problem, the last tweak made melee better again (just gotta relearn new timings once more). If you prefer the quickslash style, use knifes instead of the katana. Its not like Phantom is locked into using a katana now is he
.
Movementspeed is the key factor in melee, making Aura, Proxy, Sparks, and Kira better at straight up melee than anybody else. That held true even on Phantoms release. Only thing that saved him then, was that he could reliably get in range undetected and oneshot them, foregoing a fair melee.
The katana is pretty much the burstrifle of the melee weapons. it has the highest frontloaded damage right now (who knows might change with the kukri), if your target is low or in general squishy you can end a fight instantly preventing further damage. If you try it against someone with enough HP you are more likely going to die because of the delays.
