Thirdperson n other stuff

(makron) #1

Some of these stuff has probobly been posted before but, whatta heck.

Thirdperson in vehicles
I personally don’t want this in the game, maybe as a option that is default off. When having thirdperson in vehicles you can easily see what’s behind you and that makes it hard to sneak past them or plant a banana in the exhaust etc.
So by having it off it gives the footsoldiers a bit more strength against vehicles.
I’ve also thought about just disabling thirdperson on the ‘heavy’ vehicles like the Titan and Golitah since they’re the biggest foes and should be considered more dangerous. Small vehicles like the Quadbike are just for transportation so.

Competitive features
Very useful, most other id games had a mod with all of these stuff. ready/timeout/timein/lock/unlock etc.

Spectatorfriendly
Now, W:ET is very fun to spectate and I’m guessing ET:QW will be so too. Demos that take up just a few megs would be very nice, If MVD was in there as well it would be useful.
GTV would awesome, I don’t know how hard this is to achive but if it did make its way in there it would great.

Customisation
Most gamers enjoy modifying their games to give them a distinct and personal look and feel. Most options and features that aren’t considered as a cheats or so should be clientsided, like ‘bobbing’ in Q4 was a serveroption from the beginning.
A mod with alot of options is CPMA and you should check it out :]

Anyways, I’m sure Quake Wars will be a great game :]

Amen to the third person view defaulting to off, I too feel it gives too much advantage to the vehicle drivers

it’d be kinda cool if you could put like your clan symbol on the uniform. Kinda like in halo 2

My vote is also for “default off” controlled serverside on third person views.

I think they’re fine for spectators, though, and maybe a vehicle tutorial mode would be available to learn how to drive with more ability to see obstacles. In game, they might just have to jump out of their truck to see the ditch they drove into.

That, and I will enjoy shanking unwitting foes…

I f ully support switching between 1st and 3rd person views, no matter what you are doing.

I think the thirdperson/firstperson thing depends a lot on the game.

So by having it off it gives the footsoldiers a bit more strength against vehicles.

Assumes that the footsoldier needs more strength against vehicles, which isn’t a given. So yeah, my vote is SD should do what they think best

although i agree with you with all the other points you’ve stated, this one…

costumization is way cool. i’ve tweaked rtcw, w:et, q3 to my personal taste. but (!) lately i’ve been thinking that this just isn’t just cosmetics and has an impact on how the game is played competition wise.

Counter Strike example: you go to a lan house, get on a computer, and play CS.
W:ET/RtCW example: you go to a lan house, get on a computer, spend 10 minutes tweaking all the settings to your taste through the console and then play.

Counter Strike is the most played game, both online as in lan/offline, and has lots of offline tournaments in almost every lanhouse, from small lan’s, to biggest lan’s like CPL and others. It’s very “user friendly” (read: noob friendly). any kid can get on a computer and play CS. When he does so, he has exactly the same chances of fragging other users connected. In quake’ish games (rtcw/q3/w:et), an experienced user always has an advantage because you can tweak lots of settings that modify the look and feel of the game. Instead of dark themed maps, you’ll get bright lit darkness :open_mouth:

CS is pretty straight forward. Most of the tweaks you can make are through the options dialog (yes, you’ve also got a console but it’s cvar tweaking power is not comparable to q3 console editing) and i trully think that this is a great advantage to bring more players to a game.

I can’t imagine myself playing W:ET without my tweaked/personal config. I really don’t. BUT if disabling certain cvars/cheat protected (r_intensity, r_overbrightbits, r_mapoverbrightbits and so on) would bring more players and hence more competition to ET:QW i would say go for it. W:ET has quakecon. RtCW had Quakecon. Can ET:QW get something like the CPL or maybe even the WCG + Quakecon?

The more “noob friendly” a game is, the more people will play it without feeling overwelmed. imo.

PS: yep, english is not my native language

Yet another vote to ‘thirdperson off by default’. Or perhaps it should be allowed, but your tank would become pink.

(richmanrush) #9

I’ll vote third person off as well. I’m pretty much a ground pounder in every game I play, so I feel armor has a slight advantage having a 270-360 degree peripheral vision. Even worse when you have anti-tank/armor weapons like satchels/C4 that must be stuck to a vehicle or thrown at close range.

I don’t use vehicles in games all that often, but when I do, I must admit I use third person only because the option is there and it does give you the advantage. But in a game like Red Orchestra, where the tank/jeep driver can only see out his little window, it makes using vehicles alot more exciting IMO (because you need a good crew to keep yourself alive).

As someone said, we don’t know how the balance between infantry and armor will be, and either way, Quake Wars is going to rock. But I would love to see a forced 1st person perspective in vehicles if not only for the fact that the cockpit screenshots look amazing!

Need I say this isn’t Battlefield 2?

In BF2 third person in vehicles can give an advantage to see that special ops sneaking up with satchels, but you don’t have this in Quake Wars. Why would I attempt to get close and satchel a tank as a Soldier when I could just nail it from far away with the rocket launcher? Or simply nail it with machine gun fire?

I can’t stop laughing at your avatar.

Interesting, you’re the only one that mentioned BattleField 2 in this thread

Yes but a lot of the fears (ie 3rd person view etc etc) have been derived from bf2. I agree with an above poster that SD should do what they feel is right, nothing so far has given me cause to question my confidence in SD.

Overall ETQW is shaping up mighty fine cant wait for a demo.

Another vote for no third person in vehicles. It made tanks so much more fun in red orchestra, and so much cheesier in battlefield.
