Thinking of Going to EGE...

(DarkangelUK) #1

So i’m thinking of going to the EuroGamer Expo in London in October, but it’s a bit of a pain. Cost wise i’d need to get a 12hr bus journey there that would get me to London at 7:30am on saturday, spend my time there… but the bus home doesn’t leave till 11:45pm that night… that’s a lot of time to kill! Anyone else going? It’s ‘do-able’ and getting the bus and no accommodation makes it affordable, just wondering if it’s worth it. Has anyone been before?

Why wouldn’t you use a train? I’ve done Europe by train and by bus, and the train wins, hands down.

(DarkangelUK) #3

Cos the train is about £100 return from where I am… and bus is £23.

(retsy) #4

Just force some etqw people to go with you

(mortis) #5

£100 is brutal. I can fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles for about $100 (£66) round trip! I thought that the trains used to be inexpensive…?

(ducks) #6

So £23 for a 12 hour bus journey, or £100 for a 2-3 hour train journey.

I’d go for the latter! Have you checked for any discounts? It’s amazing the cheap tickets you can get if you hunt a little harder

I wish it was 2 - 3 hrs! There’s a train leaving on friday evening just after I finish work (i’m right up from the train station any way)… £28.50 7hr 15min and gets me there just after midnight, so i’d need to spend extra money getting a hotel. Return at 4pm saturday that gets me home at 11pm that night for £29. If I leave the sunday at 8am that’s £31.50 @ 8hrs 25mins, but i’d need to get the hotel for a 2nd night. Those were the cheapest tickets… all else were atleast £50 each way, and that’s before booking fees.

EDIT: £75 for a cheap hotel room per night o_O

I found that trains England & Scotland are freaking expensives compared to other countries I’ve visited… any explanations for that?

(Englander) #9

Oh that’s a little thing called rip off Britain

(matsy) #10

Personally I would go for the bus every time, but thats because I’m a poor student…

(DarkangelUK) #11

Has it been decided already who from SD will be going to EGE?

(Shiv) #12

not sd… but me and bro are going.

(DarkangelUK) #13

EGE ticket bought for satuday and train tickets booked \o/

(mortis) #14

So you’re going on the train, after all?

It’s far more civilized than any bus, that’s for sure!

(DarkangelUK) #15

Yeah the pricing worked out reasonable. Sleeper train down for £33, and direct train back on sunday for £46.

(Shiv) #16

Tickets booked, will get train tickets closer to the date when freshers stuff has been sorted :x

Full privatisation, just like the British water, completely messed up.

(mortis) #18

So true, here in my city in California, we have a private water supply rather than a public owned utility, and our water is twice as expensive as those found in larger cities…even though I live next to the largest lake wholly within California. I cringe whenever I see the bill in my mailbox…

(tokamak) #19

I thought Néstle owns the water at least a great portion of the aquafiers in California. Again, it’s messed up.

(mortis) #20

Actually, most of the big cities are fed by government owned reservoirs and canals. Only certain cities (like the hellhole that I live in) have monopoly agreements with private water companies. And we pay about double the average price. People who live in the desert (Los Angeles) pay less and have cleaner water. So much for the holiness of capitalism…when it comes to utilities, public utilities are almost always better than private ones…
