Theater Mode?

Have no problem with extra demo functions eg BlackOps kill/deaths time bar
Server side demos however, I dont think is needed. Just my opinion though.

Depends on how client demos record other players who aren’t close to you, and if you want to watch from their point of view or not. In black ops can you pick any player and watch from their POV no matter where they are in relation to you (sounds like you can but I don’t know)? Can’t do that in ETQW because the data for the other players isn’t complete, or rather lets say you can but the results are “less than optimal”.

(Humate) #43

If client demos, operate in the etqw way, otherwise known as ‘area of relevance’ - then i’m fine with that.
If however a player can view any perspective in a demo regardless - then im against it

We often used etqwtv as a means to get info on other teams we played against.

ahh, I see, you don’t want the other guys stealing your best places or tactics. I think they can still get them in ETQW demos because chances are you’ll be using most of them in close enough proximity sooner or later. IMO the quality is good enough to see generally what you are doing, but so terrible that you could never make a decent clip from it (unless you’re really far away in which case you can’t even see what direction you’re facing and move in 20’ leaps every 2-3 seconds).

(BMXer) #45

You can watch anyone and everyone’s POV from any demo in ETQW with g_testspectator. It gets super laggy and glitchy the further away from the person is you are trying to view but by no means would this stop someone from seeing ALL YOUR L33T strats and your special hiding spots. You can tell exactly where every player is from any demo. You can’t hide!

Stealing strats is a lame excuse for not sharing demos. Do you honestly think a single position or a strat you used against another team is going is going to make or break your match? Really? and you actually expect to win more than one match with some gimmick ass strat that only works because you were so secret? please…

Theather mode is pretty good to catch wallhackers aimboters and whatever, black ops come out recently but already have a lot of cheaters on it : p, and the theather mode proves it. Eventually if it gets full of hackers that will turn people off, so my hope is that brink team will have someone to review hack acusations with videos or whatever and do something about it, because vac doesnt recognizes any of those cheats yet.

No need to get emotional over a post on the internet mate.
Simply stating that teams of equal skill will use this as a method to get the slightest of edges.
Makes absolute fv<k all difference where the skill differential is massive. Even if you know what a team is going to do, doesnt mean you can actually stop it.

Oh and our strats were far from leet. We just killed everyone, cleaned up and then did the objective.
So my opinion isnt predicated, on protecting how we play the game.
Our strats are as blatantly obvious, as stating you can use g_testspectator.

Hey thats my plot! I’m already involved in too much drama, dont want another one

In etqw you could record_NET_demo (I dunno the cvar anymore) and it would record EVERYTHING, not only area of relevance. So it is already possible in etqw to record everything.

(DarkangelUK) #50

No, netdedemo was still area of relevence, stuff far away wouldn’t get recorded… only server demos did that.

(Crytiqal) #51

I thought that was the difference between /record or /recordnetdemo

And I am pretty sure I could get full demos with the latter

(DarkangelUK) #52

Recorddemo was a renderdemo (from D3 ad Q4), recordnetdemo was a netdemo in Q3 and ETQW.

Record isnt in ETQW unless its from server side only? It’s not in the cvar list any way for normal client.

(Cankor) #53

ETQW demos still record every player, the area of relevance effect just means that the data sent from the servers for players outside your area of relevance is greatly reduced. At least this is my experience, I’ve always been able to spec from any players point of view, it’s just extremely choppy and pretty much worthless for players who aren’t close (a fixed view angle that doesn’t change no matter where they are aiming, movements in large jerks, etc.)

So maybe that what you mean when yu say it doesn’t “record”, but there is still enough info there to see where everyone is even if it’s not precise.

(DarkangelUK) #54

Well obviously being a network demo it knows where every player is on the map, but that’s it… and as you say, pretty much worthless. Your initial point was “In etqw you could record_NET_demo (I dunno the cvar anymore) and it would record EVERYTHING, not only area of relevance. So it is already possible in etqw to record everything.” which isn’t true.

(Crytiqal) #55

Well, I could have gotten confused overtime, since I also hosted about 14 servers for TAW back in the day.

(Mustang) #56

I bought me a couple of CoD7 the other day
The way it seems to work is server demos get uploaded to a master file repository once
And the players in the demo are tagged against it

This negates the need for multiple/all clients having to download demos
But does mean a file farm would be needed

That’s pretty interesting, how did you figure that out?

My first thought was, holy crap that’s a lot of files to store in one place. I wonder if and when they expire?

(DarkangelUK) #58

Demos are available for 7 days then they get removed.

(Cankor) #59

I assume you can download them then?

That seems like a good system.

A thing like theater mode would not only be a nice thing for the community but also for the general gamer and SD themselves. Just look at COD: BO…the gameplay movies are spammed everywhere and realy promote the game more than anything else.
