Just thought I post a screenshot of the map I’m working on from time to time:
I started to work on it end of 2008 and made only very slow progress as I became father nearly at the same time (January 2009) and work + private life didn’t leave much time for mapping anymore. Nevertheless I continued working on the map occasionally.
In the map you basically have one soviet-style skyscraper building that really exists in my home town Warsaw, Poland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palace_of_Culture_and_Science,_Warsaw).
I had to re-think the concept of the map as the nature of the building is very complex and I started hitting the odd “brush has too many surfaces” compiler error again. Right now I plan to cover the lower part with clouds and have a simple terrain being basically a flat texture of a city. I might come up with questions so if you are still checking this forum then expect them soon

Very nice level of detail there Could try splitting it up with detail groups + LOD levels for the more detailed areas like the spiky decorations. Here’s my own long-term project that will probably never get finished - Estate 2:

Pretty awesome, good job, I got little excited when you mentioned space pirates but was slightly disappointed when it wasn’t metroid space pirates, that would have been mental!

Personal story:
After the horrific and unjustifiable death of her war hero son in combat and the consequent political cover up, Aadarshini Singh suffered a severe traumatic breakdown on the battlefield and abandoned her similarly decorated military service in disgrace. Immediately she invested her every hour and savant-like penchant for medical, and mechanical engineering into her husband’s research for an unlimited energy source that would help end the planet side war, and hopefully prevent a cataclysmic interplanitary war.
The week before the final inception of the energy source, her research facility was invaded by an ersatz military force, and destroyed, along with her colleagues, husband, and unborn child. Being the sole survivor of the attack, Aadarshini crept into hiding and alone witnessed the uncanny usage of her decade of research to power impossibly massive extraplanitary fleets, humanoid tanks and vast personal armies. Revisiting the site of the massacre and her life’s end she discovered traces linking the murders to the very same, supposedly independent company that funded her research.
After months of existing as a listless vagrant Aadarshini finally stumbled onto a private hangar occupied by a massive star cruiser, stocked with tank walkers. Seizing the opportunity, she quickly invaded the ship and used it as a platform to reach the stars and wage an all out guerrilla war against the enemies of humanity who destroyed her world.

Hah. I should do some creature like a Metroid Prime space pirate, since they’re almost exclusively bad ass looking.
Right now, though, I’m looking to model/sculpt stuff from concept artists that are not working somewhere already. ; O
Edit: She isn’t much of a WIP, since I’m so done with her. Unless I messed up one of the battle axe’s walk cycles or something.

Yes, very impressive. Is that space-pirate something you came up with?
The people at Polycount don’t seem to think so. : O But that’s refreshing.
About the character: Yeah. Mostly haphazard, though. Threw things together I thought were cool. I’m going to redo her when I have a better computer(hopefully I can sculpt upwards of 50 million) and a better tablet. Hopefully a Cintiq. : O Maybe I’ll put her or another character in Brink if the tools are there.
The story I had set up for a short animation I wanted to do a while ago, and set up with IK, cameras and characters, but stopped when I realized that I sucked(not so much anymore) at walk cycle animation.
