The video card question, what to buy

(TAngelo) #1

I finally decided it’s time to upgrade this old hog, and have pretty much decided on how to upgrade (in terms of system specs). One thing I’m not clear on at all right now though is the graphics card. I know both nvidia and ATI are putting out their brand new cards this month, which should bring down the prices of their existing cards in the next few months. Radeon’s 9800pro however has just made a sharp drop in price (to about 200 euros) right now, which sounds like a great deal for sure.

At this point I probably have several options, mainly to wait until prices start dropping, though I don’t know how fast that will be – or to go for that 9800pro. I could wait until the price for that one drops even further, but maybe it won’t; maybe if I wait, the other cards’ prices will drop very little or very gradually andthe 9800 pro will be taken off the market, and that chance will be lost. I just don’t know. Any advice on this issue?

what radon 9800pro is it?

also the prices of graphics cards are always going down so in my opinion u should buy ur card when this months new ones come out im sure if u do buy it then the prices will drop soon after but that always happens anyway.

also i would warn u about that offer that comes with the ati cards its says that if u buy the card u got a token so u can get HL2 free when it comes out but u still have to pay for P&P plus taxes also its not the retail version but only the single player but of course im sure that wont change ur opinion on what card u will get

The real question is:

Should you get the Radeon X800, or the GeForce 6800 Ultra

if you go for 9800pro make sure its the 256bit proper one, not sapphire’s dodgy 128bit “9800 pro”.

Thanks for the help; after mailing back and forth with the store, they offered me this card:

VGA ASUS 128Mb A9600XT TD

at just over 200 euros. Is this a good buy? Should I get this one? Since the 9700 series appears to be no longer available and I’m not willing to shell out hundreds of bucks for an 9800 pro or XT, I’m thinking this should be an ok deal. Is there a 256 RAM version of this card however, and should I try to get that one instead of the 128M version? Also I’m curious as to what the “TD” at the end is about.

TD is TV out and DVI, but no video in

Thanks. So should I get this card you think? I would’ve liked to get the 9800pro obviously, but it’s still quite expensive even now it’s been marked down, and since the 9700 series is gone,…
