yes, i’d like a definative answer to this. you’re probably right, kendle. just a nagging hunch i’ve always had in the back of my mind that it must surely be possible for shady admins to tweak things for theirs/their clans favor. whatever the final analysis, perhaps this topic could be added to your cheat doc once we hear the real answer, kendle.
The Truth about Cheating in ET
Server-side mods (a là shrubet) don’t require any changed libraries to be downloaded on the client, and on any that don’t significantly change gameplay, it wouldn’t be too hard to make a ‘tweaked’ replacement for the server side. It would be possible to do this with etpro, but rather difficult, since there are several bugfixes that’ll have to be made on the server side for things to behave correctly, and there are some new features that would be hard to fake (e.g. getting the anticheat stuff to work well enough so that the proper guid is shown in /cheaters.) Along the same lines, it’s quite possible to edit raw demo files, but nobody’s done it yet (in ET) to my knowledge.
Thanks for clearing that up Rain. Opening post edited (and updated cheats.txt text file version uploaded). If anyone has demos of weirdness (other than the known hacks listed) occuring on what appear to be “kosher” servers, I’d be interested in seeing them.
Oh, and Orangeboy, I’ve uploaded your 2nd wallhack demo and linked it in the opening post. It’s funny the way you got kick-voted for spotting him though, even I could see he was wallhacking, and without using r_shownormals 1 either!!
Even if you don’t need r_shownormals you do need to spec him, and players who haven’t done that will have to guess what’s more likely: false accusation (which is pretty common) or a cheat that PB doesn’t catch.
I’d be interrested in what convinced you he was wallhacking Kendle (I agree, but I’m not sure I would have seen it without r_shownormals).
P.S. 30 minutes ago I was accused of having a grenade aimbot and a health cheat. I guess I should have referred them to this thread before kicking the one that was most persistent.
To my mind the guy was easy to spot, his tracking through the tree and when he’s by the wall past the railgun are blatant examples of wallhacking. If you check the thread where I reported it to the clan you’ll notice I was very careful to not give out the cheater’s tag in case I was wrong. Another player commenting “STFU neger” was a classy touch, too. Still not 100% if he was aimbotting or not, though I’m reasonably assured he was.
As for some div talking about grenade aimbots… well, new term starts in September, doesn’t it?
The one I uploaded is the 2nd of the 2 Orangeboy provided. In it you see the guy hiding behind a tree and take out 2 guys in succession, 1 coming round the side of the tree and the other a little way off. The first one I thought might have been quick reactions, but he immediately camped down behind the tree again, looking straight at it, and then popped out and picked off another guy. Seemed fairly obvious he could see thru it.
edit: Orangeboy got there first!
Heck, i demo’ed a Wicked!Geezer for wallhacking a month ago
though i lost it… i might use encase to recover it, if needed
The first one wasn’t even that quick, but after watching it in slow motion I agree that the second kill gives it away. It wouldn’t have convinced me if I had been speccing him (and only seeing it once, at normal speed) though, but good catch Orangeboy.
Orangeboy: What makes you say that he was aimbotting? I’ve only seen one aimbot demo, and this looked nothing like that.
Maybe, Spoof. I knew before I started watching the demo I was going to be seeing a wallhack, so I guess it’s easy to spot what you’re actually on the look out for. Not sure I’d have been able to do it on server at the time.
Don’t think he was using an aimbot though, 1v1 he was bit all over the place.
i cant get the demos to work anymore i keep getting the client mismatch even though they worked like 30 mins ago
but yeh the wicked guy is 100% using an aimbot because there is a part when he goes under the railgun and shoots at 2 ppl coming towards him and half way through shooting one he quickly switches to the other one which is a normal thing an aimbot does when there is more than one target to shoot at.
i think what i said was right as i couldnt get the 2nd demo to work i cant remember exactly what i saw when i watched them a few weeks back but he def is using an aimbot.
In the first demo, the guy he takes out in the hut suggests to me that he’s using an aimbot. He has a couple of shots and then scores 2 headshots in a row, when surely the spread would have increased. He could just have fantastic aim, but, well…
thanks to rain for the info and kendle for the update
so basically, i can make a hacked qagame_mp_x86.dll on my server that i’ve added a secret command to that would give me/my friends an advantage, but it would have to use it’s own directory on the clients pc like shrubet does, thus alerting them to my antics…?
btw i don’t have a server so don’t worry
p.s. i did find this server:
^7.^1Clan^7>>^1Code ^7 War Server|390ms|193.225.60.240:40601
which claims to be running “.clancode ETPro” but it’s passworded so i dunno exactly what that means…
Um, the aimbot may help him aim, but surely it can’t decrease spread?
(Something for Kendle to add…)
Great friggin article, thanks a lot for the effort. One question re the following damage hack info:
"When you shoot at a target your PC simply informs the server that you have pressed your “attack” button. The server decides how many shots you fired, in what direction, and from what position and then determines whether you hit anything, applying the damage award appropriate to the weapon used and the “hitbox” that was struck (“hitbox” (see below) being “head” or “body” generally). No piece of software installed on any players PC can override the server, either to inflict more damage on an opponent, or to receive less damage. "
To my understanding, which basically comes from what I -= interpret=- reyalp as having told me usually, with antilag isnt the CLIENT determining whether or not the clients players shot is hitting the hitbox?
I don’t think so herf. My assumption about antilag is that it enables the server to more accurately calculate where everyone is, so that when you send the server the “I pressed my attack key” signal it can better judge what you hit, if anything. It can’t tell the server how much damage to apply for shots that were on target.
How etmain antilag differs from ETPro client-side antilag I’ve no idea, it’s a subject that always confused the hell out of me. Perhaps Rain or Bani would like to provide (or link us to) a fuller explanation?
