The Future of ET

(BenEngel) #1

Firstly I’d just like to say that I sincerely believe that ET is the best multiplayer game on the net at the moment. The designers seem to have had an uncanny ability to create a game that is fun, rewarding and is able to be played for a very long time with great enjoyment. I believe that ET achieves this by encouraging a style of gameplay where you have to work as a team to win. No one class can win the game by themselves - you need to interact with others to succeed and this is where the true enjoyment comes from whether you realise it or not. The game is still fast paced and action packed but there is so much more of a thrill acting in a team environent towards a comon goal than simply lone rambos.

I do however think that the game is facing a problem. The maps are seriously stagnant by now and we have all been playing the 6 same maps for an entire year. They are all extremely well designed maps (mostly - I still dont really like railgun  ) and for the most part are fair and balanced but quite simply I need a bit more variety to keep up my interest.

So why don’t I download some custom maps and play them you say? Well there are two major issues with this. Firstly the download bug that causes the game to crash EVERY time I download a new custom map from a server drives me nuts. It is even worse when it crashes, I try to reconnect and still can’t get on the server because it didnt download properly . Then I have wasted time and bandwidth (which translates to $$ for me) downloading a map for nothing. This encourages me to stay away from custom maps and servers that run them. This is the single most important issue retarding the growth of ET and needs to be addressed if ET is not to whither and die on the grapevine.

Secondly and on a related note I can download new maps externally to ET and occasionally find a server that is running them but there are usually only a few people playing on the server. Even though I am on DSL I can usually only see about a dozen servers that have a good enough ping on them to play on. Maybe one or two of these servers will have custom maps. Frequently those servers will be underpopulated and therefore unfun to play on so I will just go back to a standard server with the old maps on them. So it is a chicken and the egg thing. Maps arent being distributed properly because of technical issues and so not enough people have the maps to create a critical mass of demand for servers running new maps. Then what happens is people get bored and the game dies. Which would be incredibly sad because the game is so fantastic and unbelievably well designed and Splash Damage went out on an unprecedented limb releasing it for free.

My solution is that Splash Damage release a new patch that fixes the download bug. Also include in this patch is 6 of the best community made maps. Instantly the entire community will have 6 more maps that will do a massive amount to furthering the spread of ET and strenghtening the game for the future. I am assuming that Splash wouldnt have to invest to much time in fixing the download bug and compiling the new maps. They may have to make a few modifications to the best 6 maps but I am assuming that the best community made maps should be good enough for wide release. Unfortunately there is no real financial incentive for Splash to devote to much resources to this and they have alrady got their game of the year publicity etc… but I am hoping that just a little bit of effort will pay off big time and truly make the game one of the greats. I see a lot of potential for ET in the future and if these small but extremely fundamental issues could be fixed Splash Damages greatest creation could stick around for a lot longer. I hope that you guys consider my idea and that any technical/resource issues can be worked out.

Cheers and thx for a great game!!

Hello nice post, but the patch is very unlikely to happen, maybe you should address this to etpro development. etpro is carrying on the et development most actively. What comes to the custom map pack that has been tried twice in this forum and every time it has just crashed to that SD would be responsible to the errors and bugs in maps that wouldn’t be theirs so do not expect it to happen either.

Sorry to crash you dreams m8. Maybe some other organization would release the custom map pack.

Yes, SD did a great job, but I’d given up ET a looong time ago if it hadn’t been for bani. A patch won’t happen. A lot of servers I visit got Supply Depot in the map cycle. More and smaller maps would be good.

I don’t see the problem with the custom maps.
I play regularly on two servers that run 9 /10 custom map campaigns.
It’s pretty fun to play on them.

So my suggestion.
Try to find a suitable server that’s running custom maps.
And then download the maps that are played on this server.
I would first look what maps are played.
And then would download the maps from another source (not via ET).

I understand that ET Pro and Shrub have taken up where SD left off but from what Ive read on the ET Pro website the download map bug cant be fixed by them - it needs to be done in the original build. This can’t be done by anyone other than SD. Also the custom map pack would have to be released by SD as part of a new patch to ensure widespread circulation - that is the whole point. Simply releasing a pack by itself by a third party means only a small percentage of players get it and the wider population still doesnt have new maps. Everyone needs to be forced to go and get the new maps as part of a new patch otherwise they simply can’t join servers and play ET at all because they would be running an old version of ET. I also understand that SD would then be responsible for bugs and problems in maps not created by them - this is a tricky problem but I guess I was hoping the best 6 maps in the community would only need a little polishing and tweaking by SD to be ready for widespread release. Again an important issue - but one that could be fixed by SD with only a small investment of time.

I can see why a patch will probably not happen - there is no incentive for SD to do so apart from professional pride but it just seems like a shame - thats all. You are right nullskillz - i can go and download maps externally and try and find a server that plays custom maps continually - It’s just a pain in the ass to do so and not an easy solution. And like I said before there arent heaps of servers available to me with good pings and because of the lack of widespread demand for servers with new maps then those servers I can play on in turn dont usually play custom maps. Supply meets demand etc…

Anyways hopefully I will be able to find something

happy fraggin all

It’s not SD’s call.

The game is owned by Activision, not SD. SD can only make patches etc if they’re paid and authorised to do so by Activision, and given it’s a free game, how likely do you think that is to happen?

Besides, the SD guys are probably plenty busy with the projects they’re working on ATM - the DoomIII-based game they’re developing etc.

I’ve never played custom maps. I’ve downloaded a couple and run around them, but I’ve never been inclined too. The 6 originals are (barring Railgun) well designed and, for me at least, very replayable. The nature of online gaming means that no 2 games are ever the same, so the maps have a high replayability.

As for the somewhat misleading title, the future of ET is the same for all other online games. Eventually, it’ll be replaced with someone new. It’ll be interesting to see how many people drop off and start playing DooM 3 online, particulary when a mod appears to allow more than 4 people. Having said that, ET isn’t dead yet, and won’t be for some time. ET was the first online game I played, so I’ll always have a special affinity for it.

My 2€…
Well the quick way to fix your download thingie would be to put cl_allowdownload 0 in your cfg, then you’d skip the crash and go straight to the cant connect thingie.

Also in my opinion, the fun factor in ET isn’t which map you’re playing but who you’re playing with, so just get all your online buddies in one place and you’ll see the 6 default maps will go by smoothly, even railgun.

A slightly ‘broader’ view on the Future of ET?

It started as a hair-brained idea to attempt to produce a map that has old skool arcade rules behind it. A small map, very specific objective, well protected by bots with a time limit - hopefully the timelimit creates tension and provides some kind of replay value. Might be useful as well if you can still select different degrees of hardship so that completing the level within the timelimit on ‘normal’ is not as hard as finishing the level on ‘insane’.

Then I got to thinking about how SP and MP games that I’ve played seem to stack up. You buy the SP part of the game ok? It generally has around 30 hours playing time after which a decent percentage will try the MP, get hooked leaving the publisher with a relatively captive audience. The strangeness for me is that you can end up going 3 years without seeing an SP update by which time the MP part of teh game has evolved. The point is though that the MP part of the game isn’t the money spinner neccessarily, more that it keeps ppl talking about the game for a long, long time.

How about this then - suppose instead of a 30 level adventure shoot-em-up stlye thing, why not try an ‘episodic’ approach in the sense that say every 3 months a small, tough level is released - almost like a playable demo but not quite, as the fundamentals of gameplay are intact - what changes are the maps, and bots. Imagine a series of RtCW SP maps each with a very specific short mission but with the arcade rule of a timelimit introduced or some such device - the idea is to have high replay value on a relatively modest SP map .

Who knows, maybe eventually as the SP side changes, elements can work their way into the MP game as a form of evolution.

I wouldn’t underestimate the MP part as far as sales go, considering most peepz first download the juarez to play the SP, and when MP looks promising go out to the store to buy a legit key.

SP games would definitely have better replay value if some stuff gets changed or added once in a while, and if the game was more randomized in the first place. Like enemies not always camping in the same place, getting triggered at the same event for starters.

You can download map packs from http://rtcw.filefront.com/sort.files?game=WET&cat=3259&ref=2657

(evilsock) #12

How about this, let’s say that there’s a RtCW2 in the works. What if the game were sold in the following way;

Shareware Version - free to download, includes ‘episode 1’ of the SP RtCW2 game, also an MP game with a ‘lite’ version of Punkbuster, restricted to three endorsed mp maps. Consider this to be the ‘ET’ of RtCW2 - a trainer.

The other episodes are available to download as the full game with gamers paying online with their credit / debit cards. The full game will also be available in every high street game store

Along with the complete SP game, a full version of RtCW2 includes an enhanced MP game which includes full PB support, additional maps, full campaign gametype, an XP system and additi0nal weapons. Map and Modding support are also available in the full version.

hmm all that stuff is just true… but now if SD does release their patch, then Bani has to start writing his mod on the new patch which will be time consuming ? right ?

Shrub… god that mod is nice for pubs but come on i personally think someone should take the mod and start fixing its bugs and we can have less bugs than before  :chef:

(SCDS_reyalP) #14

Nah, it is extremely unlikely they would make big changes in a patch, and most gamecode fixes they would put in would most likely come from the etpro team in the first place. As long as the changes aren’t huge, porting a mod to a new release isn’t that hard. And honestly, all they really need to do is fix the worst engine bugs.

To fix shrub, one would need the source, which has not been released. There are also limits to what you can fix in a server only mod.

@evilsock: Now that would be a return to the good old days
