The full potential of Brink still a mystery?

A normal slide is only a small distance. If you remember that trailer, he was sliding on a piece of tin which is why he went for as long as he did. I doubt there will be pieces of metal lying around the playground…
As toka said it’s not practical to implement. Also the only reason you’d do it is to shoot someone behind you. If someone is shooting at you, you’re not going to be looking at the ground as someone else suggested.

Meh, I’m going Heavy and I’m competent enough to figure out SMART for myself.

As stated earlier, there will be a SMART vid in the new series of tutorials that just released.

I bet, but what I’m looking for isn’t another tutorial.

I and many others just want to see someone who knows the maps and the game (i.e. a Dev) to rip **** up by terrorizing through the map and showing us just how much SMART changes the gameplay.

As of now we see SMART where the player will casually slide into cover or vault, nothing riduclously crazy of any “combos” so to speak.

(A.i) #24

if I am correct, we yet to see a light running speed too…

Oh, so you want to have somebody else show you what SMART is capable of, rather than figuring it out and experimenting for yourself after the game releases, gotcha.

(Realirony) #26

I remember reading (watching?) an interview with one of the Devs where he stated that some of the Game Testers who had logged countless hours into Brink (and gotten particularly good at it) were pulling crazy combos all over the maps.

The one combo mentioned that stuck out in my mind is he stated that someone vaulted a railing, wall jumped into another vaulting rail and ending by doing a sliding tackle into an enemy’s shins, thus knocking them down then proceeded to unload on the downed target. Seems interesting. Should be able to string together some awesome combos.
(I don’t remember the exact combo the guy did, nor do I remember which of many interviews it came from but the gist of it was that the kid did 3-4 chained SMART moves that ended in a sliding tackle to the legs)

(Linsolv) #27

I don’t want to see someone busting a move on the maps, because I don’t want to have someone else trying to tell me what the ‘best’ routes are before the game is even out. The trick to innovation is not already having a solution.

(riptide) #28

Yes… I also liked watching defrag videos for quake. What’s wrong with watching the capabilities of something? It’s not like seeing somebody else do something makes it easier for you… the skill lies in the timing. He and myself included just want to see the speed this game is capable of.

Everyone that plays/played quake3/ql knows bridge to rail… but not everyone can do it and nobody cares who the first person was to do it. Just whether you can or not.

(H0RSE) #29

Why don’t you just play it and find out?

(riptide) #30

I will but I want to see the speed because it will make or break the game for a few people that are on the fence.

(Nail) #31

oh really ? they won’t get the game because there’s no prerelease video of silly stuff ?
how about after game is released they rent it and find out for themselves

The speed of the game is actually a big deal…

Here’s an example… iD showcasing quake 3… all you see is running forward and walking… 2 speeds. You never see strafe jumping which is at least 2 x faster on average… it determines how the game plays. It goes from being a simple and slow system to being a fast paced technical marvel… or flaw since that was what it really was…

Oh and you can’t rent games for PC and the movement for idtech4 games has been quite different from console to pc.

(Linsolv) #33

id (let’s get the typography right, at least) didn’t really advertise at all for Quake 3 that I can recall. And I mean… I got the game not long after launch on the reputation of Q1 and Q2. Don’t recall any video adverts, especially not showing advanced stuff like rocket jumping, plasma jumping, strafe jumping… Later, teams would come out with videos, and maybe you’re thinking id had something to do with those, but they didn’t.

(Nail) #34

rent game after release, decide for yourself, is that difficult ?

(riptide) #35

I’m not confused at all… I didn’t say they advertise any of that… the players did through word of mouth and seeing it at quakecon… I’m simply saying the game is a very different game once the mechanics are utilized to their full potential… Btw you were 8 years old when q3 was in beta.

So yes I’d like to see some of the potential that the engine (in this game) has before I recommend it some people. Are you content in the fact that we’re going to be running around like the guys in this video and be happy with “we will see how fast the game really is when we get it in our hands”

@Nails… you are a special one aren’t you. Show me where I can rent PC games.

I am perfectly content with the community having to learn for itself. Do you think that if there wasn’t the predominance of gasoline engines in cars, that we wouldn’t have developed some alternative technology? Every time strategy stagnates, it’s because one option becomes the default. If we have someone give us an option before we have even a week to experiment, then that’s going to become the default for everyone and you’ll see significantly less innovation.

You know. The kind of innovation that led to all the great trick jumping videos the Quake 3 community put out.

I just want to see a light body type running around the map showing some of the smart stuff. What’s so wrong with wanting to know what you get before you get it? it has nothing to do with learning…

These videos show horrible aim and I still have faith in the system… I’m asking to see some basic stuff that goes beyond the limits of a medium body type.

(obliviondoll) #38

I prefer them not spoonfeeding us - player videos will pretty quickly outpace anything the devs advertise, if only to show off that we can find stuff they didn’t (or didn’t show us)

That’s because there isn’t a whole lot to figure out as a heavy

Mirror’s Edge did that just right, even 'though it had a separate 180 turn button. You even could flip the bird while doing so.
