The ET Experience

(schmeisser) #1

Typical Et playing experience for me:

Start game, it freezes during the opening movie. It crashes catastrophically. Restart.

Find my favorite server with one slot left, try to click on it quick as it scrolls by, miss, end up on the “Sphincter Boy” server, playing Railgun (whuch sucks, IMHO).

I bail, try to find another server. I log on, it starts downloading “Sphincter Beach”, a new map, at 7kb/sec. Three minutes later, download is complete, ET crashes.

I reconnect, but by this time “Server is Full”.

I find another server, get into game for 45 seconds, Punkbuster kicks me for some obsure incompatible file I just downloaded from the “Sphincter Boy” server.

I find another server, start playing Axis (which I hate because defense is inherently boring). Allies are completely kicking our ass, cause this is an xp save server with 1337 players with massive xp. Their aim is mythic, I die repeatedly, shot by trickjumping medics from impossible distances.

Spawnkilling is encouraged, so Allies have set up a mortar and MG42 IN our spawn. I die repeatedly, accomplishing nothing.

I accidently shoot an Axis covop teamate named “Ninja-Wolf Sphincter”, who spends the remaining time in the game sniper tk’ing me and satchel-charging my corpse.

I stay on through the bitter end, hoping for a fresh map.

It’s Railgun.

Et crashes.

God I love this friggin game. I just can’t remember why.

yeah i used to have thoes problems

finding a good pub game is incredable dificut so what i did was play pubs for a few months and when i found a well balenced server with good pink and nice rules and player number i added it to my faves

when you come on youl always have a good server to play on and all your problems will be over

btw i like the cov ops satcheling the corpse bit (so true)

(Englander) #4

The problem with finding a decent Public Server when your regular ones are max’d out. can be frustrating.

http://wolf.dehn.net/gameservers.php is attempting to build a list of public servers, that you can vote your approval of, (if you like them).

There are currently 80+ listed and you can add your own to the list as well.

Please feel free to drop by and browse / vote on the list.

wouldnt it be a good idea to have some sort of elite players club where there are servers pasword protected and changed each week, then all the players could be informed via e-mail or look on a secure web site

dont no how used chose the players but then all fair players could be garanteed good places to play with no cheats or anything

Join a clan.

(carnage) #8

not all clans are that good
it can be hard to get in a good one
the experience is differnt from pub play
you cant go and have a game you have to wait for training
dont always have the time to turn up to the events

(Jaquboss) #9

Your ET needs a medic!

(easy target) #10

FREE!

(carnage) #11

ET has got to stop hidding behind the it’s free excuse all the time

it was going to be a comercial game so i would expect the highest quality from it and just because something is free doesnt mean it is better

IRT schmeisser:
I feel your pain, some days I just curse at the screen and disconnect after playing half a map. But then other days I find some nice people on one of my favourite servers, get lucky with some nades and end up being in The Zone - and pub life feels good again. Get ASE (to avoid a couple of your problems) and keep trying, but don’t hesitate using the Disconnect button if you end up in the wrong place.

Do I sound ungrateful for a free game I am still addicted to? Far from it. Once in a while the stars align, I get onto my favorite sever, I manage not to get killed for a few minutes at t time, we play as team, and a well balanced, hard fought game is won. But that’s definitely the exception, not the rule. I find the only way to keep the game relatively stable is a complete uninstall/reinstall every couple of months. There is just too much tinkering out there, too many maps, mods, etc., often conflicting with each other. I am cautiously optimistic that RTCW2 (if it ever happens) will solve many of the inherent bugs that (I suspect) led SD to abandon ET as a commercial game in the first place. In the maeantime. I will keep playing this screwed up game.

Just delete those pesky .pk3 files sometimes ;/

(fretn) #15

if it would have been commercial there would have been time to finish it …

put your fav server in favorites so you dont ‘misclick’ and play on linux btw the downloads dont crash there :stuck_out_tongue:

I still don’t think XP means anything… not much, anyway

I can get level 4 light weapons in well under half the map and to be honest that’s all I need or even use. Eventually I’m full medic, battle sense and weapons. I’m rarely a different class unless my team is completely retarded. This isn’t hard to accomplish in a regular 3 map campaign…

So after I have those 3 things full, any XP after that is absolutely meaningless because it’s not going toward anything else. It’s just “points” really. I mean I think we’ve all played on XP save servers at one point or another and there’s times I’ve had well over 1000 xp but only full Medic, Battle Sense and Light Weapons which doesn’t make me any better or worse than the guy with 400xp.

I don’t know that’s just how I see it.

Sucks for all your crashes and everything though, I feel your pain on that. And all the maps that have 30 different versions is lame too. It reminds me of Warcraft 3

“Temple 3 Beta Alpha Final - Final.pk3”

Tbf, the problems you complain about are generally either your own fault or depend upon your actions for betterment:

  • Use All Seeing Eye as Sauron said. That will stop your problems with joining the wrong server.
  • It is Best to quit as soon as railgun comes up in the map rotation.
  • When server is full, type : /timescale 150 into the console.
  • Go into the game options and make sure that ‘Get missing files from server’ is set to ‘no’ (I think the command for putting in a cfg is ‘cl_downloads 0’)
  • As to your problem of being raped by trickjumping medics with insane XP and impossible aim…learn how to make the ‘impossible’ possible and don’t join a server where everyone has monster XP
  • If the teams are way out, call an XP shuffle once-twice then leave if you are still not satisfied.
  • Learn how to deal with spawnkilling. 3 seconds invulnerability works wonders, as does not running straight into that spawntimed mortar/a’s. If there is a mortar/mg IN your spawn, then he’s dead about 1 sec after you spawn. Railgun + battery = /quit for general shitness of design and sometimes unavoidable spawn rape.
  • As for ur nightmare cv ops tmmate…I sympathise :expressionless:

I hope that helps. Live the dream
