The death of Dirty Bomb

(derpyMoonMoon) #1

So let me just say before I get into it… I love Dirty Bomb. I love the concept, I love the mechanics, I love the merc system. The only thing I don’t like is how it seems that the devs don’t listen to the community enough and are incredibly slow to change anything for the better. Vassili gets a buff, which was unnecessary in most people’s opinions, when we have been asking for a Phantom rework since the day he came out. We get no information on when a major update is coming, we barely get any information on events other than “teasers”, and it takes months to release mercs that have already been designed, with only a few small reworks needed.

Also, why is this game in open beta? It seems like it’s released, but giving it the beta title entitles the devs to pull this kind of s***. After the “official release”, won’t there still be bugs being patched and mercs released? Smite releases a new class every 2 weeks or so. I understand it’s a different game completely, but that still doesn’t give SD a reason to drag their feet for 3 months between merc releases.

I like the game, and I want it to go in a good direction, with devs that listen to community feedback. I want a fun game that’s balanced in most matches. The simple fact is that it isn’t that game. I will be leaving Dirty Bomb for Overwatch for the most part when it comes out. I really hope SD will learn from their mistakes.

This is simply a rant about Dirty Bombs devs. This is all opinion, an opinion that can easily be changed with a good argument with plenty of reasoning behind it. What about all of you? What’s your opinion on the direction of the game and SD? I would like a civil discussion, don’t just write “you’re wrong, SD is doing a great job”, give reasons for it, try to change my mind.

The reason new mercs are taking so long is because there are no longer any mercs that are basically complete to re-release. Any new mercs will have to be made from scratch. Same goes for maps.

Wasn’t Aimee and Turtle in the closed beta though? All of the hard work for them seems to have been completed already.

-On Twitter they hint about the upcoming new rogue on voque update
-Involve players in private test servers to ensure the players like the new content
-Have active streams to talk about projects, ideas, and finishing touches
-Have active mods that respond to the forums

They do work on things and show players what they’re doing. If you followed Dirty Bomb/SD Twitters and even watched the streams, you would know they are active in the forums. And the Private Test Servers show they do care about content and only passionate players are allowed to see it. I wish I knew what was in it, but that is for the select few and the devs to discuss.

Well, to be fair, they did ditch RNG for the next event. EVERYBODY in the community hates the stupid RNG cases. Simple fact of DB. For the ReV event, they changed it.

I do agree with your point about Phantom. Vassili was fine IMO. Phantom, on the other hand, is broken. Unless you are REALLY REALLY REALLY good with him, and can kill people at stupid rates, you don’t affect the objective at all. (To be fair, players that good with Phantom do exist. I played against one earlier. My team got frickin steamrolled.)

Yes, but any mercs after them (perhaps with the exception of Javelin) will, like I said, need to be created from the ground up.

I follow them on Twitter and watch the streams at least once a week, but that’s one of the things I’m talking about, they give teasers but won’t even tell us the release date. They are vague and drag their feet on new content. It is about 10 months since the release of closed beta, and they haven’t even released all of the mercs that they’ve already made.

I have played Overwatch, and if you expect that game to be better than Dirty Bomb, you will be thoroughly disappointed. It’s a terribly average game in its current state. The only upside is the fact that Blizzard is working on it which is pretty much a 100% guarantee that it will be constantly updated (RIP Diablo).

I really want to like this dev team and this new event, if done right, may change my mind on this game. If they start working faster and listening, this game could easily be the best FPS we’ve seen for decades.

(MarsRover) #9

You might as well leave DB for EVE Online because it has about as much in common with DB as Overwatch.

(Faraleth) #10

There’s a good reason for not giving a solid release date. Consumer frustrations are understandable, but these often come from lack of knowledge of how the games industry actually works - although again, understandable if you have no interest.

The reason there is no release date yet, is simply because they do not have one. Internally there will be deadlines they give themselves for completed tasks, but there are things you simply cannot predict, such as bugs in the system. This is why once an update is near completion there will be a full bug check and sweep of not only new content, but old content too. This is a very time-consuming task and one of the main reasons why almost no developer will put out multiple updates in a short amount of time.

There is no point releasing something on your deadline date if there are bugs and all sorts messing up the build. If they said “The update will likely be released on 5th September” (just as an example) and then it didn’t come out then, and was delayed, there would be huge back-lash. Heck, we even saw this before with the Phoenix update!

Phoenix was delayed by around 5 days from his intended launch, and people lost their absolute shit. There was rage and shit-posting all over the damn forums… Then people wonder why the developers don’t give a concrete release date until everything is finalised. That’s why.

DB gunplay is better than overwatch from playing both, but with more recoil and spread DB is losing its special touch. One more change to increase spread and recoil and I’ll probably uninstall this game.

(derpyMoonMoon) #12

This is exactly what I think. If SD can step up their game, release content more often, then this game can make a comeback. If pub balance can be fixed, specifically the shuffle teams, then I’m sure more players will stay. I understand that DB has a high learning curve, but if the teams are balanced, that shouldn’t be as much of a problem.

@Faraleth, I understand setting a concrete release date can be problematic, but simply saying that they are in the bug squashing stage can help immensely in my opinion. Maybe I’m just strange, but if someone hints at a release date that should be a week or two away, but say it’ll up to a month away, it kind of kills all of my hype.

(Jostabeere) #13

You can’t compare MOBA character design with FPS character design. MOBAS release so many mercs because it’s easy and not that hard to balance.

(Faraleth) #14

Nope, that’s exactly why the release date for updates remain pending until they are 100% sure they are ready to go with it. Being given a date, and then being told it will be later, “kills the hype” for a lot of people. But they also don’t tease an update either, until the release date is getting closer… So, fingers crossed for the next update!

(derpyMoonMoon) #15

@Faraleth, okay apart from specifying release dates, why does SD take so long to release new content, specifically mercs that are already mostly done or the Phantom remake? I know that they are working on a few maps, balance changes, and bug fixes, but what else could really be higher priority?

(Backuplight) #16

This comes up a lot. Small dev team problems. Nothing significant content wise is going to come in a hurry - as far as I’ve heard, we have an objective/stopwatch map and an execution map on the way, and two more mercs. Once those mercs are done, it’ll be a significantly larger effort to release another so I wouldn’t expect any more of those anytime soon.

(kaMMakaZZi9) #17

Do we even know the release date for the ReV update? The whole story line was confusing with Bleak Chic being canceled. So does that mean it is or is not coming out on April 18th? Even that they make cryptic.

(AnonOmis1000) #18

@Jostabeere Overwatch isn’t a MOBA.

@K-smooth what’s wrong with recoil abd bullet spread?

(Backuplight) #19

They tweeted that they are excited for next week. Pretty much answers that.

(Jostabeere) #20

If you read his post carefully, he is speaking about Smite when saying DB has not many playable classes/lond playable classes development.
Smite is a Moba.
