Terrain too big?O_o

(BXpress) #1

hiho, i made a big terrain for my Remagen map… i thought it would work but it seems the terrain is too big!
its

x 25000 and y 20000
heres a pic:

i get the following error if i want to compile:
************ ERROR ************
MAX_SURFACE_VERTS

so, what to do? and what does that error mean?

(SuperC) #2

oops… :eek2:

(WoodwilL) #3

It says something about that here
http://www.wolfensteinx.com/surface/tutorials/compile_errors.html#16

(Slippery Jim) #4

Jesus, my vid card won’t be able to handle the clipping lol.

I won’t be able to see 3/4 of the bridge.

(evillair) #5

Make it smaller. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Frankesk) #6

The dimensions are “wrong”, you probably will get hologrid, they must be even numbers that can be divided by 256, generally.

The better values for your terrain should be

x: 25088 (98 quads along x axis, 256 units wide)
y: 19968 (78 quads along y axis, 256 units wide)

(BXpress) #7

ahh, thx, that helps a lot:)

hm but MOEP same error,
************ ERROR ************
MAX_SURFACE_VERTS

(MuffinMan) #8

no matter what the problem is now - this terrain is really huge! you should test it and maby just run from one end to the other once to see the dimensions…

(BXpress) #9

i think radar ones is as big as this! :bored:

(Thej) #10

Did u perhaps group the terrain brushes together? Or did u place something in the terrain and then subracted?

(sock) #11

Have you compiled with (-meta) on the BSP stage ?

Sock
:moo:

(kyleb) #12

i am guessing radar is more like half that, if not a third; not to mention it looks like radar is two seprate terains to me, maybe three. it sounds to me as if the terain surface has too many verticies for the engine to deal with.

(BXpress) #13

Have you compiled with (-meta) on the BSP stage ?

Sock
:moo:[/quote]

yes i did!

(kyleb) #14

btw, i checked radar.bsp and found:

“mapcoordsmaxs” “5248 -5888”
“mapcoordsmins” “-6016 5376”

so it is 11264 square, less than a quarter of your terain.

(BXpress) #15

hehe… okok, radar is 1/6 of my map… hmm… but, what should i doo? i cant make a booring terrain for a so nice Ludendorff bridge! i could if i would…

(Danyboy) #16

Mate you really have to re think your map - seriously

the game engine you are mapping for works well with small-medium sized maps with high detail levels

If you want to make maps in the region of that size - use a suitable grafix engine - Battlefield 1942 will allow you to make massive 100s of acres of terrain - and insert a bridge model.

Target your map to the game - it would take a good 5 mins to walk from 1 corner to the other in that terrain

(Thej) #17

Well iwas looking on google for this error, and i found this on one of the sites.

ERROR: MAX_SURFACE_VERTS

VERTS (VERTICES), means you’ve got a lot of patches and curves. If this is the case, try deleting some of them and go for a less ambitious design

or this one.

MAX_SURFACE_VERTS

VERTS (VERTICES), means you’ve got a lot of patches and curves. If this is the case, try deleting some of them and go for a less ambitious design. (QER)

This is very similar to the MAX_POINTS_ON_WINDING error, though i think it applies to patches instead of brushes, i.e. you have too many control points (djbob)

So we have two answers for the error :<

(chavo_one) #18

Maybe you should look into using a skyportal.

(Thej) #19

or scale the entire map down by a half.how sad that may be, cause it would be a shame if u cant make the map now, cause the terrain is to big.

(BXpress) #20

@Dannyboy, how long are you mapping? what have u done? what is your experience? its possible, somehow…
the LAST thing a mapper should do is to give up! u should learn that…
@Thej, um there are just 12 patches in my map O_o ithink thats not the porblem… because the map was compiling without that terrain!
@chav_one, will try…
