Alright so its confirmed that Brink has 8 maps but I’ve heard that theres 2 bonus maps that are “climax/epilogue/endgame” maps, so are those 2 of the 8 maps or are there 8 normal maps + 2 unlockables. Also the game will have multiple main objectives (the ones that progress the map) are these on par with BFBC2 rush map objectives and have the maps around the same size or will Brink have larger maps
Teh maps
I heard about the unlockable maps aswell. you get them from completing each campaign ( one for resistance and on for security compiagn complete) and i dont think any of the maps on the game will come close to the scale of Bad Company thos maps are F***ing HUGE, i think the maps will be more comparable with the scale of Halo or Killzone
^^
Surely you’re trollin.
Also if we’re gonna discuss this again there is already a lengthy thread debating the map count.
But… but… If we don’t get the editor, who are we going to be able to create blocky LEGO-style custom maps that hang in outer space??
Image shows the silly and an insane-looking custom map “Loffy’s CTF Prefab”, made for W:ET.
Do you not want the BRINK gaming world to be flooded by tons of insane custom maps in various stages of beta-releases??!!

Regarding KnollDark’s question, I do not know about that. 8 or 10. For me, it does not matter. As long as they are good. Which they will be I am sure.
ok tbf, I do not count 1 map as 2, merely because I am playing it on the other teams side.
So 8 maps does not equal a total of 16 for me.
And yes, 8 maps is pretty poor I would say…
12 maps is fine
Wasn’t it 2 bonus maps per faction? Basically 4 “what if maps”, maps that take an extreme view of the story line, but not actually part of the proper story itself (e.g. reactor where Resistence basically do a terrorist bomb plant and blow it up) making it 12 maps in total.
If 8 maps are perfectly balanced it’s fine… I kinda doubt that but one can hope
But even 5 balanced maps would definitely be enough for the competitive scene… and I doubt that the game will get boring for casuals because of the lack of maps. Thinking about the depth of the game with all the guns, abilites, team combinations etc makes my head explode.
Darkangel (and the others) : for what I understand, like elevator13, we have 10 maps :
8 maps for the campaign, plus 2 bonus maps : 1 for the victory of each side.
Here :
- The game will ship with 8 maps and 2 bonus, “what if” maps (1 for each faction,) for a total of 10. The Reactor map shown at E3 2010, was a “what if” map. Wedgwood explained it was unlocked after you complete the Resistance campaign.
- I know many of you are probably thinking, “only 8 maps?!” But Splash Damage has a track record of following the “quality over quantity” formula, when approaching map design. I remember their previous games, and how I would just play 1 or 2 maps for each game, all day long. Even in games that feature a plethora maps, players usually just pick a handful that they like to play.
- They are saying that there are 16 missions (8 per side) since you can play each map as both Resistance and Security. Think of it like racing games, where you will race a track backwards. Even though it is the same track you played before, it is still essentially different, and since Brink is not a Deathmatch or CTF based game, and has cut-scenes and story, the game plays entirely different depending which side you play on. So if you are playing the Campaign, there are 20 “missions” (not maps) to play - 8 for each faction and 4 “what if” missions. If you are playing just regular matches, with no campaign tied to them, there are 10 maps total.
edit : … right after that in HORSE’s compendum update 2, there’s a Richard Ham’s quote that seems to disagree with that though :
“Brink will have sixteen missions, spread across the two campaigns, but out of those sixteen, four are what we like to call the “what if?” missions. They’re not actually part of the official storyline.”
- Richard Ham
If I understand well “out of”, that means the 4 what if missions are part of the 16 missions total… so only 12 core missions (6 maps) + 4 what if (2 maps) = 8 maps total ?
I’m kind of puzzled now…
Richard Ham’s quote …“Brink will have sixteen missions, spread across the two campaigns, but out of those sixteen, four are what we like to call the “what if?” missions. They’re not actually part of the official storyline.”
If I understand well “out of”, that means the 4 what if missions are part of the 16 missions total… so only 12 core missions (6 maps) + 4 what if (2 maps) = 8 maps total ?

Do not be puzzled.
If words have any meaning at all, and the entire world has not lost their ability to do simple math, then there are indeed "12 core missions (6 maps) + 4 what if (2 maps) = 8 maps total "
JeP, you are correct and there is no other interpretation for the Rahdo quote above…if words have meaning.
At one time, different numbers may have been tossed around and that may be the source of everyone’s confusion. Mr. Ham’s recent quote however, sets the record straight.
Additionally, if 8 extensive “maps” are not enough for someone, then perhaps they need to rethink their methods for assessing quality games. As has been quite eloquently argued in other threads, it is not the quantity (the sum of units) but the quality (game mode appropriateness and replayability) of the maps that is important.
:magicpony:
I could provide several examples of games that have more than 8 maps yet have only 3 or 4 that I enjoy playing. I will refrain, however, because that will most likely just cause nerd rage or fanboism.
The assumption (and my belief) here is that the 8 maps for Brink are high quality.
Peace.
When I said 8 maps was poor, I was assuming that almost each of them was the Sd’s usual quality, I think its poor because I want more, not because they (SD) are “cheap” or anything, dont misinterpret my words
Peace
3Suns : That’s what I thought when seeing Ham’s quote… then Horse should edit the compendum cause the two are not consistant for now.
They’ve talk several times about the global duration of the campaign, I don’t have the number in mind but even considering the fact that they’re probably increasing them a bit, that looked not too short, it seems like each map will be quite long, perhaps a bit like L4D that has fairly long maps. I’ll look around about it.
Apples : sorry, when I asked if it was some kind of humour, it was because at the time in the topic, the guess was more around 10 maps total… didn’t know where did your “8 maps” came from. I was more talking about that part of your post.
Now to comment your statement… You won’t be surprise if I tell you I’m quite confident on the 8 maps being sufficient at the game’s release
Yeah, I’ve seen plenty of Lego maps during my run with Unreal and Quake.
That poor quality junk is exactly why I don’t want a map editor. Someone always makes a Walmart, too, for some reason.
Do you not want the BRINK gaming world to be flooded by tons of insane custom maps in various stages of beta-releases??!!
Great point, that’s how I feel about custom maps as well. But this was mainly a symptom of the small size of the mod community in ETQW. A larger community might result in more people and more motivation to finish maps more coherent to Brink.
