Teh maps

(BioSnark) #21

I wish game devs would just quit so I don’t have to play their crap games wait wut?

Surely you’re trollin.

Also if we’re gonna discuss this again there is already a lengthy thread debating the map count.
No, actually I’m not trolling.

While I will admit that there are some decent quality user-created maps out there for other games, it’s been my experience that there’s usually something wrong with them. (either with the graphics or gameplay)

And…

I think I speak for everyone here when I say, we’re all sick of maps that just advertise somebody’s clan. (gack!)
Yeah, I’ve seen plenty of Lego maps during my run with Unreal and Quake.

That poor quality junk is exactly why I don’t want a map editor. Someone always makes a Walmart, too, for some reason.
If people make crappy maps, don’t play them…
A map editor can lead to very creative and well designed custom content - play those maps.

(Cankor) #24

It seems to me with this number of maps it’s almost a sure thing that there will be free DLC later on to help entice people to buy the game new vs used.

(H0RSE) #25

The words “free” and “DLC” don’t tend to merge well on console. On PC however, yes, I could see that happening.

(BioSnark) #26

Oh, come now! What is this choice you speak of? It sounds like it might require effort and willpower.

(Whydmer) #27

I have an assortment of free DLC on my 360, most of it non consequential but some of it has certainly added fun. I have also paid for DLC like Undead Nightmare for RDR, and the Borderlands DLC. Good DLC is like a good expansion pack on the PC, some of it is worth paying for some not.

When a game company makes a good product then it is worth compensating them. If the money is just going to the publisher/distributor and/or Microsoft then not so much.

Yes, but I was talking about just delaying something that would ordinarily be in the initial release as a mechanism to increase sales (not an expansion pack as DLC). It’s not an expansion pack so much as it is a reduction in the initial content (but not the ultimate content). DICE recently did this on BC2 and it’s more and more a common tactic.

I should note this doesn’t bother me a bit (when it’s released for free) in case it seems like I’m being accusatory towards the publisher. It does bother me when it comes later with a price tag on it though.

Why are people saying 8 maps are poor. I mean the maps are a lot bigger than most games. And ET started out with less maps… and in the end most servers had about 8 maps in their rotation anyway.

And it has been said that there will be no mods or anything like that… atleast at launch. Not only because of developement time, but probably also DLC. This is something that people who don’t play new-school games probably don’t realise. I would just hope that they would come out with all the custom mod abilities etc after a year or so.

How are the maps bigger than most games? I would expect them to be smaller than most games with vehicles. I don’t think Container City is particularly big. If anything they are probably smaller than “most games”, but regardless in both cases it’s pure speculation.

And no one (who is in a position to know) has said anywhere I have seen that their won’t be any DLC.

8 is a relatively small number of maps, it’s 2/3 as many as SD’s last game. It’s especially a small number put into context of trying to say you have a true single player campaign. Even though you can play from both sides, the campaign is going to be very short. This is one of the reasons I suspect that the publisher is holding some of them back.

That said, it does mean you’d have to design the campaign differently. In games with multiple modes you can release a new mode on a map that’s already been released as DLC (or unlockable content, same difference). You can’t do that with Brink. So holding back any maps will shorten the campaign which wouldn’t be good for day one reviews, so that’s an argument against it. Also you’d have to design the campaign with sort of a part 2 storyline if you did that. Either that or any DLC maps are multi-player only and not part of the campaign.

Still, despite the issues with a shorter campaign I’m guessing there will be some free DLC maps fairly early on because 8 just seems like to few and it’s a good way to convert guys who would otherwise buy the game used into buying it new instead.

(Mustkunstn1k) #31

Ofcourse if you compare the maps to the Battlefield games, then these are smaller. But they are packed with detail also, not just emty.

I figured the maps will be something like ET. And ET imho has quite big maps since there are many sections of it.

Yeah you’re right the add thing is slightly irritating. Is it really too much to ask to remember which maps you like and dislike though?

Personally 8 maps with asymetrical gameplay will keep me entertained for well over a year if they’re good. It should be pretty easy to release free maps on Steam and as someone said, Dice released free maps for BC2 through the VIP codes.

(harpy515) #33

Let’s all remember that BC2 only had like 6-7 maps. But they were huge and had 3-4 parts each. So thats really like 18-21(ish) maps. This will be the same as they’ve already talked about expanding the maps throughout game play. So don’t think of it as only 8 maps.

(TiN TiN) #34

I do wish they had some more maps but as long as they are good quality maps I won’t complain. In regards to the “free DLC”, the odds of that on console, are slim to none. A good chance it would be the latter. But if I enjoy Brink enough then I’ll have no problem dropping a few dollars for a map pack or bonus missions or whatever you want to call them.

(Herandar) #35

I’m no math major, but 6-7 huge maps are still only 6-7 maps.

And Brink’s maps aren’t going to be huge empty spaces. The Ark is a floating city of limited size.

Why not? The VIP system on BFBC2 worked fine. VIPs got new maps for free, and you could buy a VIP pass even if you bought the game used.

What I meant was you don’t have to have 15 or 16 different maps to actually have that many unique environments. I like the way BC2 did it.

(Herandar) #37

I remember a lot of grumbling and complaints on the forums and DICE’s developer blog posts up until they released the final map pack that was four entirely new maps.

(EnderWiggin.DA.) #38

8 maps will keep me interested for 6 months at most regardless of how awesome they play. Really hoping for a SDK or more maps from SD, preferably both. I really hope these are 8 stellar maps. I usually love 25%, hate 25% and like 50% of a developer’s maps. For me, this has been consistent through W:ET, CoD (2,4,WaW,BLOPS), ETQW, BC2, and others.
oh well. Game is ordered, let’s see what is served.

(LyndonL) #39

Were we playing the same game? A lot of maps were recycled.

(TiN TiN) #40

I really don’t consider those free DLC since it’s the same maps but changing them to make it work in different gametypes. I haven’t stayed up to date with all the DLC but from the map packs released while I was playing, they were all the same maps but different modes.

EDIT: Now I remember playing the 4 remade maps. Which is why I said rare as well :p. I haven’t really seen any other free map packs besides that. Not saying it’s impossible or they won’t do it but I just don’t really see it happening.
