When you think about it, aren’t we all virtual?
Technology?

What is real? How do you define real? Real is simply electrical impulses interpreted by your brain!
at least 6 of the beer I drank last night were real, the others I’m not sure

Here is an interesting presentation about how virtual textures work:
http://silverspaceship.com/src/svt/svt.avi
it’s mostly like megatexture, it uses slices of textures to make bigger textures modifying them and coloring them with pixel shader programs and achieving a large texture from small ones.
Yeah that’s it, it’s not really so much a visual effect as bumpmapping is, you’ll just see more detailed textures at a better performance.
I’ve to admit that id Tech 4 didn’t come to my mind at all when I first saw the screenshots. Compared to ETQW there are far more details, the textures look like they got a significant higher resolution as well as the models seem to have seriously increased polygon numbers and I could go on for a while with this.
So great job so far guys with the engine.
Looking at the screenshots, I see that you guys use soft shadows… Great to see this as the id Tech 4 shadows may have been revolutionary at the release of Doom³, but nowadays these hard shadows look really dated.
So with all those changes made it looks like id Tech 4 got its 3rd major incarnation after the original release (D3, Q4) and the 2nd one with megatextures (ETQW).
id Tech 5 shows really good Looking forward to the system specifications from Brink too! Looks fantastic - but possibly I can go out buy a new pc
